Man Reveals Brother Delayed Proposal Until His Girlfriend Earned More, Wedding Gets Put On Hold

Most people assume the biggest threats to a wedding come from major betrayals. In reality, sometimes it is a single sentence from the past that changes everything once the timing is right.

This Redditor had kept a conversation with his brother to himself for months, believing it was nothing more than drunken talk. But when his brother’s fiancée revealed she was thinking about making a major career decision after the wedding, he felt she should know what had once been said about her job and its role in their future.

The truth sparked a confrontation that neither of them saw coming, leaving the entire family divided over whether he did the right thing. Read on to find out why Reddit could not agree.

A man revealed his brother’s troubling remark, leaving an upcoming wedding in doubt

'AITA for telling my brother’s fiancée something he told me months ago, even though it ended up putting their wedding on hold?'

I (27M) honestly didn’t think this would become such a huge deal, but now my whole family is involved and I’m wondering if I completely screwed up.

My older brother (31M) has been with his fiancée for a little over five years. Everyone in the family likes her, and I’ve always gotten along with her too.

About eight months ago, my brother and I went out for drinks after helping a cousin move.

We were talking about work, money, and how he wanted to buy a house but couldn’t qualify for the one he wanted.

He mentioned that his girlfriend was likely getting a big promotion.

Then he laughed and said, “Once she gets that promotion, I’m finally putting a ring on it.

Between both our incomes we’ll qualify for the house I actually want.”

I asked if he was serious, and he said, “I was always going to marry her, but I’m not stupid. The timing matters.”

That comment stuck with me because it felt a little off, but I figured maybe it was just drunk talk.

I never brought it up again. A couple months later he proposed.

Last weekend, we were all at a family cookout talking about wedding plans.

Later, his fiancée and I were outside alone, and she mentioned she was considering leaving her job after the wedding because the stress wasn’t worth it anymore.

Without really thinking, I said, “You should probably talk to my brother before you do that.

She asked why, and after hesitating, I told her about the conversation we’d had.

I also told her I wasn’t saying he didn’t love her and that he may have just been joking.

She got very quiet and asked me to repeat exactly what he’d said. I did.

That night she confronted him, and apparently they argued for hours. The wedding is now on hold while she “figures things out.”

My brother is furious. He says I took one drunken conversation out of context and made him sound like he was using her for her salary.

He insists he always planned to marry her and that finances were just part of deciding when to buy a house and get married.

My parents think I should’ve stayed out of it because it wasn’t my relationship.

Some friends think she deserved to know before making a lifelong commitment.

I genuinely wasn’t trying to sabotage anything. If I wanted to, I could’ve told her months ago.

I only said something because she was talking about quitting the job that my brother specifically mentioned when he made that comment.

Now I’m wondering if I should’ve kept my mouth shut. AITA?

Some truths become difficult not because they are false, but because they belong at the intersection of honesty, loyalty, and timing. Family members are often placed in impossible positions when they possess information that could influence someone else’s major life decision.

Staying silent can feel like protecting a relationship, while speaking up can feel like betraying one. The emotional burden comes from knowing that either choice may permanently alter the lives of people you care about.

From a third-person perspective, the OP did not appear to reveal the conversation out of spite or a desire to derail the engagement. In fact, he remained silent for months after hearing his brother’s comment. What changed was the context.

When the fiancée mentioned she was seriously considering leaving the very job that had previously been linked to the proposal’s timing, the old conversation suddenly became directly relevant. The OP did not tell her that his brother did not love her or accuse him of manipulation.

Instead, he repeated what had been said while also acknowledging that alcohol may have influenced the conversation and that he could have been joking. The resulting conflict was not created solely by the disclosure but by the fact that the fiancée considered the information significant enough to question the foundation of an important life decision.

Another perspective is that the brother’s explanation is not inherently unreasonable. Many couples make practical decisions about engagement, marriage, and homeownership based on finances. Waiting until both partners are in a stronger financial position is common and often responsible. The difficulty lies in how he expressed that idea.

Saying, “Once she gets that promotion, I’m finally putting a ring on it,” frames the proposal as strategically tied to her earning potential rather than as a mutual milestone reached together.

Even if that wording failed to capture what he truly meant, those were still his words. If one drunken comment is capable of placing a five-year relationship on hold, it suggests the couple may already have unresolved questions about trust, communication, or shared expectations that extend beyond a single conversation.

Relationship researcher Dr. John Gottman has long emphasized that healthy, lasting relationships are built on transparency and shared understanding around major life decisions, particularly those involving finances and long-term goals. Couples are far more resilient when both partners openly discuss motivations, expectations, and future plans instead of relying on assumptions.

Difficult conversations may create temporary conflict, but hidden uncertainties often create deeper fractures over time.

That perspective helps explain why the fiancée reacted so strongly. The issue was likely not whether finances influenced the timing of the engagement. Many people would accept that reality.

The more painful question is whether she had been given the opportunity to understand that reasoning before making lifelong commitments. Trust depends not only on good intentions but also on feeling that important motivations have been shared honestly.

Ultimately, the OP was caught between competing loyalties: protecting his brother’s confidence and ensuring that someone making a major life decision had information she considered relevant. Reasonable people can disagree about whether he chose the right moment to speak.

What seems clearer is that a healthy engagement should be able to survive an honest conversation about finances, motivations, and future plans. If repeating one past statement was enough to pause the wedding, the conversation may not have created the problem as much as it revealed one that already needed to be addressed.

Check out how the community responded:

These Redditors said OP meddled and unfairly framed the brother as financially motivated

pluvio_fille − I’m going to go with YTA.   You were right to think it was information your brother needed to hear.

But if he supported that and still wanted to marry her then there is no reason for you to be trying to make it

sound like he was *only* marrying her for what she could financially contribute.

It was fine to have a conversation about her plans and get an idea as to whether or not she was planning on talking to your brother.

But if she didn’t intend on discussing this with your brother *you* could have gone to him and quietly brought it up.

This is something they should have worked through together.

Instead you straight up made the assumption your brother was marrying her purely for financial gain and stability due to her job and judged him for it.

But did you ever think maybe she was in a rush to marry to become a SAHW

and let your brother take over financial responsibilities he hadn’t agreed to or felt was manageable?

Maybe she was going to hide it from him because she also just wanted a cushy life and to get her own way regardless of his expectations? Your brother did...

Many people wait or plan around when they feel they are in a more stable position or when a wedding/marriage will help create stability.

Just because he made light of the situation doesn’t necessarily mean that his motives were driven by greed.

You didn’t need to intentionally try to make him seem like he was using her when you don’t have any real evidence that was the case.

Idobeleiveinkarma − YTA because it wasn’t your place to say anything.

On the flipside, could it be brother really wanted to marry her, and as soon as finances were looking up,

he was happy they would now have the money to have a wedding?

ResolveResident118 − YTA.   Wanting to wait for certain financial goals to be met before marriage is pretty standard.

However, you made it seem like he was only marrying her for the money.

I assume she'd have discussed wanting to quit with her fiancé at some point and they could have discussed it rationally.

You made it into an argument. Stop getting involved in other people's lives.

Ehrlichs-Reagent − Soft YTA. Like you were being honest but yeah definitely should have minded your own business.

I've learned to stay out of people's relationships and let them figure it out without my input unless it's like a close friend actually asking for advice.

Even then I don't gossip about what their partner told me.

When I was younger gossiping and telling others about people's relationships often got me in trouble so I learned to keep my mouth shut.

A closed mouth gathers no foot. ..

Puck-achu − YTA Why not answer "I know he cares about financial planning". "It's quite a big decision that will impact the both of you".

It's the truth, and no confession needed. You chose to confess. ..

15021993 − YTA Most people get married when finances are secure and both are stable. That’s exactly what he said.

You just wanted to meddle and make them both miserable now. That might cause irreparable damage to the relationship with your brother.

This commenter believed the fiancée deserved to know what the brother had said

Ok-Owl5549 − The girl deserved to know.

This group agreed both partners should have discussed major financial plans before marriage

LifeAsksAITA − Nta. But she should have told her fiance as well that she was planning to quit. That’s a life changing decision to make.

Elmy50 − Finances are something you talk about and plan together, if you are in a relationship and especially if you get married and PRIOR to marriage.

So brother should have brought up his house plans, fiancee should have brought up planning to quit her job.

They are both the assholes, you are NTA. I don't blame the fiancee for putting things on hold.

This user blamed the couple’s poor communication more than OP alone

mychastesubaccount − ESH. Your brother is right that timing can be important, but clearly wasn't discussing it with his fiancé.

His fiance wants to quit, but clearly wasn't discussing it with him.

You quoted him out of context months later without gaining any real comprehension, knowing it would cause contention.

Do you think the fiancée had a right to know exactly what was said, or should the younger brother have encouraged a financial discussion without revealing his brother’s private comment?
