Her Estranged Father Wants Her Birth Certificate for Citizenship, but Something About the Request Feels Wrong

Family relationships can be complicated enough without adding immigration issues into the mix.

For one 23-year-old woman, a simple request from her father has reopened years of confusion, hurt, and unanswered questions. After spending most of her childhood without him, she suddenly finds herself being asked to hand over one of her most important personal documents, her original birth certificate.

On paper, the request sounds straightforward. Her father says he needs it as part of his efforts to secure U.S. citizenship.

But there is a problem.

The father who is asking for help is the same man who disappeared from her life when she was two years old and didn’t reappear until she was a teenager. Even now, their relationship feels distant and awkward. The request has left her torn between helping her younger siblings keep their father and protecting herself from a situation she doesn’t fully understand.

Here’s why she’s struggling with the decision.

'WIBTAH if i didn’t give my dad my birth certificate?'

hi everyone, i’m posting her to get some unbiased opinions.

I (23f) would like to know if WIBTAH if i didn’t give my dad (45 m) my birth certificate to gain his citizenship.

some backstory: my dad immigrated to the US from Mexico 24 years ago.

When him and my mom (41 f) had me there was language barrier.

i don’t have the full story but all i know is he left when i was 2 years old.

fast forward to when i’m 13 we get a call and its my new stepmom lol.

according to her he hit his head and lost his memory and thats why he was MIA for 10 years.

throughout middle school and high school we still barley spoke and when we were around each other it was just very awkward.

my junior year i end up moving into his house with his wife and 2 kids.

i clicked more with his wife than i did him. I ended up moving out a year later.

since i moved out it’s rare when i see then but when i do his wife always mention that if

i were to write a letter for him since I’m over the age of 21 it would better his chances of gaining citizenship.

I would just get uncomfortable and not agree or disagree to do it.

They stopped asking but the other day i got a call from his wife that

they need my original copy of my birth certificate because he finally got his appointment to gain citizenship.

he has to fly back to Mexico and there a chance he can’t come back.

For some reason I am having a hard time agreeing to this. The only reason I would agree is for my siblings because I don’t want them to go without...

But then I think about how he might not even gain citizenship and if it would be even worth it to give it to him.

I also feel like he doesn’t deserve it. He has nothing for me except give me existence.

I feel like would be the a__hole but i just need some outside perspectives. thank you. sorry for the long read..

A Father Who Was Gone for Most of Her Childhood

The woman explained that her father immigrated to the United States from Mexico more than two decades ago.

When she was very young, he left.

She never received a clear explanation at the time. Years passed without contact. Birthdays came and went. Childhood milestones happened without him there.

Then, when she was thirteen, the phone rang.

The person calling wasn’t even her father.

It was his new wife.

According to the explanation she received, her father had suffered a head injury and lost his memory, which was supposedly the reason he had disappeared for ten years.

The story never completely sat right with her.

Even after reconnecting, they never developed a close relationship. During her teenage years she eventually moved into his home for a short period, but she found herself connecting more naturally with her stepmother than with him.

A year later, she moved out.

Since then, contact has remained minimal.

The Request That Raised Red Flags

Over the years, her stepmother occasionally brought up immigration paperwork.

Whenever the family got together, there would be hints about writing letters on her father’s behalf or helping improve his chances of obtaining citizenship.

The woman never committed either way.

Then recently, the request became more specific.

Her stepmother called and said her father had finally received an appointment related to his immigration process. Apparently, he would need to travel back to Mexico and there was concern he might not be allowed to return.

To help him, they wanted her original birth certificate.

Not a copy.

The original document.

The request immediately made her uncomfortable.

Part of her wanted to help for the sake of her younger siblings. She knew what it felt like to grow up without her father and didn’t want them to experience the same absence.

But another part of her couldn’t ignore years of abandonment and emotional distance.

And perhaps most importantly, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something about the request seemed unusual.

Why Trust Matters in Situations Like This

When people face emotionally difficult family decisions, psychologists often recommend paying attention to discomfort rather than dismissing it.

According to an article from Verywell Mind, intuition is often influenced by past experiences, patterns of behavior, and observations that may not yet be fully conscious. While instincts are not always correct, persistent feelings of unease can signal the need for more information before making a decision.

That advice feels especially relevant here.

The issue isn’t simply whether helping her father is the right thing to do.

The issue is whether she fully understands why the document is being requested and what it will be used for.

Trust is often built through consistency, transparency, and reliability. Unfortunately, those are qualities that have largely been missing from this relationship.

After years of limited contact and unanswered questions, it makes sense that she would hesitate before handing over an important personal document.

Experts frequently emphasize that boundaries are not punishments. They are tools that allow people to protect themselves while gathering the information they need to make informed decisions.

Wanting clarification is not the same as being selfish.

More Than Just a Piece of Paper

What makes this situation emotionally difficult is that the birth certificate represents more than paperwork.

For her father, it may symbolize an opportunity.

For her, it represents a relationship that never really existed.

She isn’t wrestling with a legal document. She’s wrestling with years of disappointment, uncertainty, and the feeling that she is being asked to help someone who was rarely there for her.

That doesn’t automatically mean she should refuse.

But it does mean she deserves answers before making a decision.

Many readers felt that if the request is legitimate, there should be no issue explaining exactly why the document is needed, what agency requires it, and whether a certified copy could accomplish the same purpose.

Those questions seem reasonable.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

Many questioned why an original birth certificate would be necessary and pointed out that certified copies can often be obtained through official records offices.

CharieRarie − There is absolutely no reason why he would need the original copy of the birth certificate, apart from illegal and fraudulent ones. Do not send it.

mrskris10nerd − NTA- He does not need your birth certificate, especially the original. There are no benefits for an immigrant who happened to father a child in this country.

His child being in the US will not matter at all to immigration.

I would be highly suspicious of why they are asking for it, especially that you are over 18 and not under his care.

kipsterdude − NTA? I call BS. Why can't they use one of the birth certificates of one of his children with his new wife?

(I'm assuming they're half siblings to you rather than full biological siblings?

Unrelated. I'm googling to see if there's any reason he should need your birth certificate for his citizenship.

Also, the nonsense of 10 year memory loss is so ridiculous, I wouldn't trust a word out of either of their mouths.

Others were deeply skeptical of the explanation surrounding the father’s decade-long disappearance and found the memory-loss story difficult to believe.

Emergency-Koala-5244 − nta. he can order a certified copy from the records office of the county where you were born.

SyrupNext8094 − They don’t need your permission to get a certified copy of the birth certificate .

As long as your father is listed on it and knows your details he can do that on his own.

Dry-Reception-2388 − NTA. I absolutely would not send my original copy. Protect yourself first.

Several readers suggested verifying any immigration requirements independently before providing personal documents.

Lolac56 − Trust your gut. Do NOT send the certificate. NTA

noelleasp − He hit his head and lost his memory for 10 years then it all came back to him that he already had a family? ???? NTA

mandybecca − NTA - alarm bells are going off.

There should be no reason he needs an original copy of his adult daughter’s birth certificate. You’re right to feel off about it. Don’t send it.

Purpleninja1132 − NTA. A backstory that is unverifiable and seems off.

Hitting his head and losing his memory ok maybe but not calling for over 10 years?

You hardly see him and when you do they bring up you helping them out with immigration. They straight up using you for this one.

Why can’t you talk to who you need to talk to on the American side and show your birth certificate to the us officials.

Why would Mexican immigration care about the birth certificate of a kid of someone who wants to become a citizen for a different country?

Family loyalty can be powerful.

So can unresolved hurt.

This young woman finds herself caught between compassion for her siblings and uncertainty about a father who has spent much of her life as a stranger.

Helping someone is easiest when trust already exists. When trust is missing, even a simple request can feel enormous.

Whether she ultimately decides to help or not, she has every right to understand exactly what is being asked of her and why.

After all, protecting yourself and asking questions are not acts of cruelty. They are acts of responsibility.

Do you think she should help her father despite their history, or is her hesitation completely justified?
