Husband Blames His Pregnant Wife for Their Money Problems, Brother Reminds Him It Takes Two to Tango

Financial stress can put enormous pressure on a marriage, especially when a couple has built a family around one income. But when one partner begins blaming the other for circumstances they both helped create, even a sympathetic conversation can turn confrontational.

That is what happened when this Redditor’s older brother called to complain about supporting five children with a sixth on the way.

Although the brother said he felt trapped by his wife’s desire to remain a stay-at-home mother, the poster reminded him that her plans had never been a secret and that he had also played a role in expanding their family. The blunt response did not go over well. Scroll down to see why one familiar phrase ended the conversation.

A man tells his overwhelmed brother that both spouses share responsibility for their growing family

not the actual photo

'AITA for telling my brother it takes two to tango?'

I'll try to keep this as short as I can. Apologies for any spelling mistakes..

My (28M) older brother "Cameron" (34M) has been married to his highschool sweetheart "Alina" since they were both 19.

Alina grew up in a very conservative Christian household,

where she was one of 11 children and her mother stayed at home whilst her father worked to provide for the family.

Alina has always wanted to follow in her mother's footsteps and be a stay-at-home parent with a large brood of kids.

When my brother Cameron and Alina first announced their engagement, everyone in my family told Cameron

that if he really wanted that type of lifestyle with Alina, he would need to work really really hard, especially in a tough economy.

Cameron was not concerned and said he had a plan (to this day I have no idea what his plan was).

Fast-forward to now, Alina and Cameron have 5 kids, with a 6th child on the way, but they are struggling a lot financially.

He has borrowed money multiple times from my parents, and my parents give in everytime because they feel guilty about their grandkids going without. Cameron called me last night to...

He confessed to me he is secretly really upset by the news of the 6th child,

because he was trying to convince Alina to get a job, but now she is pregnant again there is no way he will be able to convince her.

This is where I may be the a__hole. I told him that I understood his frustration and his wife was partly to blame,

but he knew what Alina wanted (stay-at-home mom with lots of kids) when they got married,

and it's not as though he did anything to prevent the 6th child being conceived. He asked me what I meant and I said "well it takes two to tango."

He cussed me out and then hung up.

I'm not sure if I was an a__hole, but I was only trying to convey that he has some agency in his marriage,

and he can't blame the s__tty situation entirely on his wife. AITA?

It is human nature to look for someone to blame when life becomes overwhelming. Financial pressure, exhaustion, and the weight of unmet expectations can leave people searching for a simple explanation for a complicated problem.

Yet some of the hardest realities in marriage are the ones both partners help create over time. Accepting shared responsibility is often far more uncomfortable than pointing to one person’s mistakes, but it is also where meaningful change begins.

At the heart of this story is not simply a disagreement about money. It is the collision between expectations that were clearly established years before the marriage and the realities that followed. Alina had always been open about wanting to be a stay-at-home mother with a large family, a vision shaped by the household in which she was raised.

Cameron entered the marriage fully aware of that dream and confidently insisted he had a plan to support it. Years later, after six pregnancies and increasing financial strain, he now feels trapped by the very life they intentionally built together.

His frustration is understandable, but directing it primarily at his wife overlooks the fact that every pregnancy, every financial decision, and every continuation of that lifestyle involved choices made by both spouses.

A fresh perspective is that people often reinterpret the past when present circumstances become painful. Psychologists refer to this tendency as hindsight bias, the belief that current outcomes should have been obvious all along. Cameron may now view his wife’s desire for a large family as the central problem, even though he enthusiastically embraced that same vision when they married.

Rather than seeing himself as an active participant in those decisions, emotional exhaustion may be encouraging him to rewrite the story in a way that reduces his own responsibility. His brother’s comment that “it takes two to tango” challenged that narrative, which may explain why it felt so personal.

Psychologist Dr. Harriet Lerner has written that healthy relationships depend on resisting the urge to place responsibility entirely on one partner when problems develop. Lasting solutions emerge when both individuals recognize how their own choices contribute to the relationship’s current dynamics instead of focusing exclusively on each other’s shortcomings.

Likewise, the American Psychological Association notes that chronic financial stress can increase conflict, emotional fatigue, and blame within couples, making it more difficult to engage in balanced problem-solving without first acknowledging the shared nature of many marital challenges.

These ideas help explain why the brother’s response, while uncomfortable, reflected an important truth. Acknowledging that both spouses played a role in creating their current circumstances does not absolve either person of responsibility.

Instead, it opens the possibility for honest conversations about future decisions rather than continuing a cycle of resentment directed at only one partner.

Compassion and accountability are not opposites. Cameron deserves empathy for the immense pressure he feels as the family’s provider, just as Alina deserves recognition for dedicating herself to raising six children in accordance with the life they planned together.

The question is no longer who is at fault. It is whether both partners are willing to face the reality that tomorrow’s choices must look different if they hope for a different future.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These Redditors said Cameron should take responsibility for birth control if he does not want more children

Mytweezer − NTA he should get a vasectomy

Sensitive-Instance51 − NTA: Unfortunately you told your brother the truth he just didn't want to hear it.

Maybe your brother should think about taking over the birth control.

eatencrow − Cameron is aware of how children are conceived, yes? NTA Cameron is not a cork bobbling along at the mercy of the ocean tides.

He has agency. He can stop making babies any time he wants (abstinence, non-PIV activities, or snip-snip)

Particular-Owl2446 − NTA. Thw sperm to make the baby came from somewhere.

This group argued he helped create the family and cannot place all the blame on his wife

ladyfeyrey − NTA. I knew a couple like this. The husband didn't even go to the birth of their 4th child because he was so angry about having a 4th...

I'm with you, he absolutely participated in this, sounds like he wants to just put all the blame on his spouse.

brentwoodbreeder − NTA. Your brother is allowed to feel o__rwhelmed and scared about providing for six kids.

But he’s acting like the sixth child just happened to him instead of being something both of them participated in.

Alina’s position doesn’t sound new or surprising.

She wanted to be a SAHM with a big family from the beginning and has been consistent about that for 15 years.

If he no longer wants the life they planned together, that’s a valid conversation to have with his wife.

But blaming her alone for a family size they created together isn’t fair.

“It takes two to tango” may not have been what he wanted to hear, but it wasn’t wrong.

These commenters said he knowingly married someone who clearly wanted a large traditional family

Bippityboppitynope2 − NTA, if he had a lick of common sense he wouldn't have married someone knowing he did not want the same things as them

Kris82868 − NTA. I mean you aren't wrong. He knew what he was signing up for. Nothing was said she wasn't fulfilling her promises/end of the bargain.

He's resenting her because he changed his mind or found out what he thought he wanted was hard.

These Redditors criticized him for resenting the consequences of choices he made when he was younger

JustWordsInYourHead − NTA. Cameron called me last night to vent about it. Saying how he was sick of her and was tired of working his a** off.

He confessed to me he is secretly really upset by the news of the 6th child, because he was trying to convince Alina to get a job,

but now she is pregnant again there is no way he will be able to convince her. That's the problem right there.

High school sweet hearts, married for 15 years, and he can't talk to her about how his life goals have changed from when they were 19?

There is something wrong with their relationship if he can't have a honest conversation about that.

Your brother and his wife are one of those examples people refer to when they say "don't marry young".

mariaphoebe − Oh NTA at all, he needed to hear that. He made his choices.

If he wants to be mad at someone he should be mad at his younger self for making dumb decision.

Most readers believed the original poster wasn’t criticizing his brother for feeling overwhelmed, he was reminding him that difficult circumstances don’t erase personal responsibility.

Life plans can change, and financial realities often look very different than youthful dreams. But many felt lasting solutions begin when both partners acknowledge the choices they’ve made together instead of treating one person as solely responsible for the path they created as a couple.
