Woman Calls Boyfriend Cruel After He Sends Food Photos While She Is Recovering From a Serious Gut Illness

When someone has been sick for weeks, even small frustrations can carry far more emotional weight than usual. Hunger, pain, exhaustion, and uncertainty can make a teasing comment feel less like humor and more like salt in an open wound.

That is the situation one Reddit user found herself in after a prolonged illness severely limited what she could eat. She had already lost a significant amount of weight and was slowly trying to rebuild her tolerance for food under medical guidance. During a phone call, she told her boyfriend how much she was craving a meatball sub.

Rather than simply sympathizing, he sent her a stream of tempting photos and GIFs of the food she could not have. She became overwhelmed, called him cruel, and hung up. Scroll down to see why she later questioned whether she had been too sensitive or whether the joke was genuinely thoughtless.

'AITAH for calling my boyfriend cruel and not speaking to him for the rest of the day?'

For a bit of context: I am a 28 y/o woman, and I'm dating a 29 y/o Man. About a month ago, I thought I got food poisoning. It wasn't.

It lasted three weeks before I went to the ER because anytime I ate, my stomach would get such bad cramps that I'd be curled up in pain,

and I'd get so nauseous that I was constantly holding a sick bag. Turns out, it was a really bad bacterial infection in my gut.

I lost 20 pounds in three weeks due to starvation because I'd be so scared to eat that I'd starve myself.

Because of the infection and starvation, I was in constant agony. It was so bad that there were times I wished I'd just die to make it stop.

Now, I'm on week four, and according to a few tests, the infection is gone, but now I need to reteach my body how to eat.

I'm limited in what I can eat: basically bread, crackers, and chicken noodle soup.

Yesterday, I was talking to my boyfriend on the phone and was complaining about wanting a meatball sub.

It sounded so good, but I couldn't eat it just yet.

Well, he thought it would be funny to send me a bunch of GIFs and pictures of some amazing-looking meatball subs.

They all looked so good, and I wanted one so badly that I actually cried.

I asked why he would do that, and he said, "Oh, I thought it would be funny.

Now you have something to look forward to when you're better."

I called him cruel and hung up on him and ignored his calls and texts. It could be a month or even more before my gut is healthy enough to...

due to how much damage was done by both the infection and the starvation. I got a few texts from a mutual friend telling me that I need to take...

and obviously he meant no harm in it. But it felt needlessly cruel. I can't eat that; he knows I can't.

I keep telling myself that at least he didn't bring a meatball sub to me and eat it in front of me, but the pictures and GIFs still affected me.

But because my friend is telling me to take a joke, I'm wondering if I'm being childish or if I'm overreacting.

I still haven't spoken to my boyfriend, and it's the next day. So, AITAH?

Edit: So, I probably should have said what the texts said. It was a bunch of apologies and statements that it was just a joke.

I decided to talk to him and actually communicate. Because of this whole thing (being sick and being unable to eat),

I'm mentally, physically, and emotionally drained.

I cannot explain how many meltdowns I had because I was literally starving but couldn't eat. 20 pounds in 3 weeks is no joke.

I saw a few comments telling me to eat. I literally cannot. My doctor told me I had a chance of getting refeeding syndrome, which, in some cases, can be...

I'm eating what the doctor tells me to. In our phone call, I explained my side.

I have no idea when I'll be able to eat anything except bread, crackers, soup, and nutrition shakes.

I told him to try being in my shoes, being unable to eat for a month and not being able to know when my gut will fully heal enough to...

After explaining, he said he understands, and he won't make the 'joke' again. I'm just tired.

I just want to be able to eat normal foods again. Also, I saw a few comments asking why I waited so long to go to a doctor.

Mainly money. I don't have insurance right now, so a hospital visit would be expensive, and I wasn't sure what would need to be done.

I was honestly a bit worried that it was my gallbladder and that I might need surgery. Thankfully, that wasn't the case.

Edit 2: Okay, so I realize I should have added some details since there are a few people thinking

that my medical stuff is being overexagerated and a lot of people are wondering why I didn't go to the hospital sooner.

So, when it first started, I thought it was just food poisoning. I was staying with my mom for a few days to help her with a few things,

and we got Bob Evans. I put my leftover chicken in the fridge, but that same night, the fridge ended up losing temp.

When we felt everything in it, we thought it was all at a good temp and put it in the chest freezer while she got a mini fridge.

We put everything in there, and I ended up losing track of the days, and I ended up eating the chicken four days later.

I ended up getting sick a day later. I never threw up, but I was getting the runs, so I suspected food poisoning.

While I was going through that, my mom was still drinking water from the fridge since it was still producing water; it just wasn't cold anymore.

So, I drank the water too.

What I suspected had happened was that the chicken gave me food poisoning, and then the water also gave me food poisoning,

which is why I didn't seek medical help that first week. When it didn't get better in week two, I went to urgent care.

I'm unsure of how known urgent care is so I never mentioned it.

Urgent care couldn't do anything except give me a stool sample kit, which, since I wasn't eating, I had no waste.

At this point, I was scared of food since it caused such awful, painful cramps in my stomach, and due to hunger pangs, the pain was way worse.

By week three, I suspected I was losing weight, and I was so weak that work sent me home early; I was in so much pain that I couldn't take...

I was worried about going to the hospital since I live in the US, and I was worried about the bill since I also don't have insurance.

Turns out, it wasn't food poisoning or my gallbladder like I had been suspecting.

They suspected it was an infection, and in order to give me antibiotics, I'd need to provide a stool sample.

Again, because I wasn't eating, I wasn't producing anything. The start of week four is when I was able to provide it and get answers.

By the time they got back to me, the infection was gone. At the ER is when I learned exactly how much weight I had lost,

which was around 14 to 15 pounds, but a few days later, I'd lost another 5, so that makes 20 pounds lost in those three weeks.

I legit thought I was going to waste away. I was in constant pain from being hungry, and my nerves were shot.

So yes, it is possible to lose that much weight in so little time. My body was doing what it's supposed to and was eating away at the fat stores...

Before anyone says that I should've eaten anyway, I tried.

The moment I put any kind of food in my mouth, I'd want to spit it out.

Food was unappetizing to me, and even the thought of it made me nauseous. So it was like I literally couldn't eat.

I am currently in contact with my family doctor, and he has me on a diet plan.

Currently, I can eat plain yogurt, Crackers, soup, bread, and I can drink Ensure to help with nutrient intake :)

(I'm on the BRAT diet, but the only thing I really like in it is bread) Next week he's going to have me try a few other foods.

My body did not take well to the lack of food, and my gut was damaged due to the infection, so yes, I have to be very careful with what...

Hell no. I wish this had never happened, but hopefully soon I'll be able to eat whatever I want and leave this nightmare behind.

Sometimes a joke hurts not because it is objectively vicious, but because it lands exactly where someone is already exhausted and vulnerable.

After weeks of pain, severe food restriction, rapid weight loss, and medical uncertainty, the OP was not simply craving a meatball sub. She was grieving something most people take for granted: being able to eat without fear.

Sending her repeated images of the food she desperately wanted but medically could not yet tolerate was therefore almost guaranteed to feel different from ordinary teasing.

Her boyfriend’s explanation is believable. He apparently thought he was giving her something to anticipate rather than deliberately tormenting her. Intent matters when judging someone’s character, but it does not erase impact. Once she cried and explained why the joke hurt, the important question became whether he could understand that difference.

Relationship research supports that distinction. The Gottman Institute emphasizes that productive conflict requires validating a partner’s emotional experience even when the other person did not intend the harm.

After an argument, partners are encouraged to acknowledge the other person’s perspective, accept responsibility for their contribution, and attempt repair rather than proving that their original intention was harmless.

The medical context also makes her emotional sensitivity unsurprising. Cleveland Clinic explains that people who have experienced significant malnutrition or prolonged inadequate intake can sometimes be at risk when nutrition is reintroduced too quickly because of dangerous electrolyte and metabolic shifts.

That does not establish anything about this individual’s diagnosis, but it supports why following her own physician’s gradual refeeding plan rather than simply “eating normally” is important.

Calling the joke cruel in the moment was understandable. Refusing communication indefinitely would have been less helpful, but taking several hours to calm down after becoming overwhelmed is different from using silence as punishment.

The update shows the healthier outcome: she eventually explained the deeper issue, he listened, apologized, and agreed not to repeat the joke.

That repair matters more than deciding whether one set of GIFs makes someone an awful boyfriend. APA research on close relationships finds that high-quality support depends on both accurately understanding what a partner is experiencing and responding with genuine care.

So she was not childish for crying or feeling hurt. He also does not need to be permanently condemned for a joke whose impact he initially misunderstood.

What matters now is that he knows food is temporarily connected to pain, fear, and loss for her. Until eating becomes ordinary again, kindness means not turning that particular wound into entertainment.

See what others had to share with OP:

These Redditors said the joke was insensitive, but shutting down communication was also unhealthy

Little_Precious − Girl, you’re allowed to feel that he’s being insensitive, sometimes even the most well intended jokes just don’t land and that’s fair.

But if you want your feelings to be heard then you need to learn how to have a conversation.

Explain why it hurt your feelings and actually talk to the man about it, hanging up and icing him out completely is giving teenage tantrum vibes.

Time to grow up and learn to communicate like an adult. ESH.

oldgar9 − Not talking to someone is a terrible tactic to use, it does not accomplish anything positive,

it is a way to show that you lack communication skills. Best to leave the relationship if behavior of partner leads to this tactic.

These commenters viewed his behavior as a possible bad judgment call rather than automatic proof of cruelty

CapableWives − You're not wrong at all to be upset, but this could be a stupid misjudgement on his part.

If it's part of a pattern then dump him, but if he's genuinely remorseful and learns from it then you might eventually let it go.

Take it as a yellow flag in my opinion

Nirra_Rexx − I wasn’t there but to me it seems insensitive and dumb but not necessarily cruel.

It depends if he does other similar things or if he was just that dumb. Sending you lots of positive vibes.

I’ve been in a similar situation and even developed a freaking gluten sensitivity for years ( I assume due to the amount of white bread after).

What I will say is chicken broth is brilliant. Also when I occasionally have issues I eat only chicken broth until the pain subsides

(doctor recommendation not just Willy nilly)

and the first boiled carrot I get to eat is like the best tasting thing in the world and is like the lost carroty carrot ever.

Like the meatball sub would be overwhelming (like seriously) but that carrot…. You’re doing great. Take care of yourself!

These Redditors criticized both partners for handling the situation immaturely

TeaArtHer − I can’t believe how old you both are.

AshDenver − You’re both about 10-15 years older chronologically than you each behave.

PyroT8 − Grow tf up. Both of you. BTA.

These users agreed that sending food pictures after a serious illness could understandably feel hurtful

marina_solstice_431 − Spamming pictures of food you are physically incapable of eating after losing 20 pounds to a severe infection isn't a joke, it's pure cruelty

Simple_Yak_9929 − Next time, if anything doesn't get better after 3 days, get some help. I cant believe you waited 3 weeks! A little AH on both sides

M1CHAEL4YHVH − This is the kind of humor that men have towards each other.

He probably hasn't had a lot of girlfriends to understand them. There are more constructive ways to deal with it.

The boyfriend’s joke was badly timed and unusually insensitive given what his partner had just endured. But the update matters.

He apologized, she explained the full emotional impact, and he agreed not to repeat it. That is a much healthier ending than either endless silence or pretending the joke did not hurt.

Medical guidance from Cleveland Clinic also supports taking prolonged poor intake and refeeding concerns seriously rather than dismissing them with “just eat.”

Was calling him cruel fair in the moment? Probably understandable. The bigger question is whether he listens once the joke stops being funny. In this case, apparently he did.
