Husband Tells Wife to Leave, Then Begs Her to Stay When She Actually Starts Packing

by Leona Pham

in Social Issues

A marriage can survive conflict only when both people feel respected, informed, and emotionally safe.

When promises of change arrive after years of secrecy, threats, and repeated hurt, deciding whether to stay can become painfully complicated.

The original poster (OP) has been with her husband since they were teenagers, but their relationship has grown increasingly unhealthy.

She says he excluded her from their finances, made major decisions without her, admitted to past cheating, and repeatedly threatened divorce during arguments.

After recently telling OP to return to her home state, he reversed course and promised to treat her like a true partner if she became the kind of “devoted wife” he wanted.

Now, OP is torn between leaving with their son and trusting promises she has heard before. Read on to see what guidance the community offered.

Wife considers leaving after years of betrayal and broken promises

not the actual photo

'My husband opened the “divorce door” and i walked through?'My (26f) husband (27m) and I have had a rocky relationship for a really long

time. We got together at 19 under not so great circumstances, and it

caused issues for the first 2.5 years of us being together. But now we’ve

been married for 4.5 years and this last year has been hell, I’ve been awful

to him, he’s been awful to me. I’ve realized that my anger towards him has

been my own anger at myself projected at him for he has put me through..

The issues over the last three years:

I’ve been completely taken off the finances and kept in the dark when

asked about them (we started with a joint account, changed banks when

the military moved us). Decisions (financial and not) are not run by me

He told me the first couple weeks of me being pregnant (3 years ago) that I

was “right about everything”- meaning he cheated on me for the first

couple of years sleeping with his ex- I had also admitted to hooking up with

someone when we broke up for a week. (I’m sharing all information so that

he’s not the only AH)

Ignored me for 5 days because he was upset over the past, and will always

ignore me during/after arguments, but want to talk about it at 1am. Has

threatened to divorce me at least 12 times since January. Threatened to

take our son from me if I try to get alimony. And some other stuff that I’m

forgetting but these are the big things.

Now, 3 nights ago, he came into our room at 11pm and told me “I think you

should go back to (home state)”. And I said okay. And I’m taking the steps

necessary to do so, but now he’s begging for me to try. Saying hell put me

on the finances (bc he talked to his mom and she said he should), said he’ll

treat me like a partner, prioritize me- in return he wants a “devoted wife”.

My issue with that is 1) he’s promised this all before 2) a devoted wife in his

eyes is being lovey dovey, packing lunches, only attention for him not the

other priorities I have in my life 3) I feel as though I’ll be putting in more

effort than him on the daily bc his is a set it and forget it type of thing

(bank account and large decisions)

I just don’t know what to trust, my brain telling me that I’ll figure it out at

home, or my heart breaking for making a decision that effects the three people.

I don’t know if I’m actually willing to work it out, and that HURTS me more.

I’ve been done for a long time, every time he’s said divorce I’ve gotten once

step closer and more numb to the idea. But now that it’s my decision to

actually leave and his offer of me moving back home was only an attention

grabber idk what to think.. Any advice or guidance is appreciated 🩷

Sometimes a relationship does not end in one dramatic moment.

It ends gradually, through repeated threats, broken promises, emotional withdrawal, and the slow realization that hope has become more exhausting than leaving.

OP’s heartbreak does not necessarily mean she is making the wrong decision.

It may mean she is finally grieving what she wanted the marriage to become.

The most concerning part of this situation is not that both partners have behaved badly during a painful year.

OP acknowledges her anger and accepts responsibility for projecting some of it onto her husband.

However, the larger pattern includes infidelity, exclusion from finances, unilateral decisions, prolonged silent treatment, repeated divorce threats, and a threat to take their child if she seeks alimony.

Those behaviors create instability and make it difficult for OP to function as an equal partner.

Her husband’s sudden promises may be sincere in the moment.

The possibility of losing his family may have frightened him into recognizing the damage.

Yet meaningful change is measured by sustained behavior, not by offers made after telling a spouse to leave.

Putting OP’s name on an account is not the same as financial transparency, and promising to “treat her like a partner” should not depend on her becoming his preferred version of a devoted wife.

OP does not have to decide whether the marriage can be saved before taking practical steps to protect herself.

She can privately gather financial records, understand the family’s debts and assets, consult a family-law attorney familiar with military divorces, and arrange support in her home state.

Because threats involving money and custody have already occurred, preparation is wiser than relying on verbal reassurance.

If she considers reconciliation, it should not be based on guilt or a vague promise to try harder.

It would require full financial access, no more divorce or custody threats, individual accountability, professional counseling, and consistent change over time.

Leaving affects three people, but remaining in a cycle of fear and resentment affects them too.

Her child needs stability more than the appearance of an intact marriage.

OP is not choosing between caring and abandoning her family.

She is deciding whether this relationship still offers enough safety, equality, and trust to rebuild.

Here’s the feedback from the community:

These commenters advised returning home, contacting a lawyer, and using military resources to secure financial support

shari2600 − Move back home first, consult with lawyer right away when

you get home, file for divorce once your new state has jurisdiction, contact

military to have support payments sent directly to you while your divorce

processes, get divorced, heal.

Different-Idea-8203 − Hes military go home ( on vaction purpose definitely

not relocating the child from its home state) set up a bank account you can

call his command and get access to joint money. Talk to a lawyer file the papers.

These commenters believed years of repeated problems showed the marriage was unlikely to improve

cx4444 − So y'all have been together for 7 years and have had issues for all

6 years . .what makes you think things will get better? Time clearly isn't

helping. You and him both know you guys need to divorce. You guys just

don't want to because you guys have been together so long and don't want

to quit after such a long time.

But that's not a good reason to stay. Go back home with your son.

Jen5872 − He wants a devoted wife. Where does he promise to be a

devoted husband?   He listens to his mother but not to you. It sounds like

this is a marriage that never should have happened. I would give him one

chance at marriage counseling. Otherwise, I'd be out of there.

Free-Place-3930 − GO HOME. He lies. You know he does. And worse yet, he

is not capable of change WITH YOU. He may learn from this and be better

for the next. But the relationship and pattern you have with him will always

be. GTFO before you waste your entire life, looks and youth.

These commenters urged OP to judge her husband by his long-term behavior rather than promises made after she threatened to leave

Mors-Official − He kept pointing the rifle at the relationship, believing you

would always flinch first. This time you stopped flinching. Now he wants

the weapon lowered because he finally heard the shot. Too late is a real

place. Promises made only after the prey starts walking away smell

different. They smell like fear. Fear. Not change. You are not choosing

because of one bad night.

You are choosing after years of being kept outside the gate, years of

broken promises, threats, silence, and control. Your heart aches because a

family is heavy to carry. Carry it anyway. Judge him by the trail behind him,

not the words coming out of his mouth today. A man who has truly

changed does not demand devotion before he earns trust.

He shoulders the pack first and keeps walking, even when nobody is watching.

AppleDelight1970 − Take some space to give yourself a chance to breathe

and really think things through about your feelings.

These commenters argued that he wanted obedience rather than an equal, loving partnership

Still_Construction37 − The devoted wife comment is why you shouldn’t go

back. The fact he can’t just apologize and say he’ll change unless you

“comply” makes it seem like you currently deserve this treatment (you

don’t! ) . You deserve access to all of that stuff because you’re an equal

partner in the relationship. You ARE devoted because you’re still with him.

He’s always going to move the requirements of “devoted” around to fit his

agenda until you’re right back to where you started.

Grimalkinnn − Does he want a devoted wife or an obedient wife?

These commenters identified his control over finances and daily life as a major reason to leave

BraveRefrigerator552 − Uhm so he is VERY controlling, is that your forever?

Controlling natures do not just stop. Luckily he is in the military. You’ll get

alimony. Period. You’ll get custody if he’s active. It doesn’t sound like you

want to be a doting wife nor will he change. Why not explore resources

that support your goals?

pitizenlyn − Honestly I would have left the day I had no access to the bank

account. Done.

OP’s situation is not just about one argument or one bad year.

The pattern she describes involves broken trust, financial control, threats of divorce, and repeated promises to change only after she reaches a breaking point.

While both partners acknowledge they have hurt each other, rebuilding a marriage requires more than one person promising to be “devoted” or the other person trying harder.

Do you think OP should give the marriage another chance based on actions rather than promises, or is she already past the point of repair?

How would you decide when love is no longer enough? Share your thoughts below!
