Woman Starts Matching Her Boyfriend’s Energy, Then He Suddenly Hates His Own Relationship Style

in Social Issues

Sometimes improving yourself changes more than your confidence. It can completely alter a relationship, especially when one partner was comfortable with receiving far more attention than they were willing to give.

One young woman decided to become more independent after realizing she had been overly attached to her boyfriend. She started seeing friends, making her own plans, spending time on hobbies, and no longer rearranging everything around him.

She also stopped forcing conversations when he seemed uninterested and began responding with the same energy he had shown her for months.

The surprising part was not that she felt happier. It was how strongly her boyfriend reacted once he no longer received unlimited attention. Keep reading to find out why their new dynamic has turned into constant arguments.

'I (F19) started treating my boyfriend (M19) the same way he treats me and he absolutely hates it. Has our relationship gone beyond the saving point?'

This will be a long one...

Some imporant backstory!

Me and my boyfriend are the same age, he's turning 20 in under two months.

We've been dating for a year and a half, high school sweethearts and we're studying in uni in the same town. We have the same home town, too.

During the first year of our relationship I suffocated him with love and constant affection and attention.

I had no other hobbies, goals, etc, so my twisted logic was to attach myself to him

as much as humanely possible in a way to deepen our relationship and I expected him to do the same.

Constant calls, texts, updates, not letting him hangout with friends that are girls, the works.

This sufffocated him and after long fights, I decided that if I didn't change, this relationship would end. So, I started focusing on myself.

Old hobbies, going out with friends, being independent, gym, etc. I was always scared of being alone, but somehow, I finally find peace in it.

I stopped being so dependent on my boyfriend for love and reassurence, as I now had better things to do with my time.

To be honest, he was at fault too, since he'd often hangout with his friends over me and if we did hangout,

it'd almost certainly be a cozy night in, as somehow, everytime it came to me he was too tired to do any of the fun things he did with his...

I decided if he can exclude me from his plans (which is normal), I could exclude him from mine, which I've never done before.

For example, me and some friends went on a three day trip to another town, and when I told my bf of the plans beforehand, he assumed he's invited.

I told him he isn't. I think that's when the problems began.

I stopped calling all the time, at most once a day, stopped texting, stopped caring if he goes out with girl friends,

or if he spent more with other people than with me. During the first few months, he thrived in this new found freedom.

He expressed how much calmer he is, how peaceful he now feels around me, how nice it is I came to my senses.

I stayed in our uni town as I found a job, while he went back to our home town to work the same summer job he did last year. He...

Doesn't go out, or if he does, it's with the same two people who he doesn't get along with great. Doesn't do anything fun. Doesn't live at all.

When he calls me, he's used to me always telling stories or mentioning something interesting I stumbled upon.

However, everytime I told him something interesting he didn't react at all, and everytime I talked about my day he'd not respond or even fall asleep.

So I stopped sharing as much as I didn't feel welcome to share.

He noticed this and started fighting with me about why I'm not talking as much, my response was I simply don't have anything to say.

I started replying to him with the same bland sentences he'd reply to me with,

not out of spite or anger, I just didn't feel like sharing with him as I felt underappreciated. This angered/bothered him.

I started making more plans with my friends to which he's not invited to.

He had these ideas to go to Poland this summer with one of his friends, I asked if I can tag along, he said no.

It's a boys trip and me being there would ruin it. So I said OK. I made multiple plans with my friends about weekend beach vacations, etc.

So far all my plans have been successful, his have not. Example of one of our arguments!

Bf: When will you go somewhere with me?

Me: When are you free?

Bf: This summer I probably won’t be able to go on vacation with you.

Me: Then why did you ask?

Bf: Is that a problem that I asked?

Me: No, but why would you ask if you know you can’t?

Bf: I don’t know, to see what you’d say. So what, you saying you wouldn’t go somewhere with me?

Me: I will, gladly, just figure it out and let me know.

Bf: Yeah, figure it out, with what money?

BTW, he’s upset cuz he doesn’t have any savings and isn’t managing to save up money this summer, either.

I stopped putting my plans with him over my other plans. Instead of prioritizing him, I give him just as much attention as I do to the other people in...

I stopped picking up when I don't want to. If I don't want to talk, I don't force myself to.

I put my needs above his needs. If I visit home and drive for 10 hours there and back, I'm not staying inside all day with him.

I'm taking walks, visiting family, spending time with old friends.

This bothers him as he told me last time he just wanted to relax with me by spending the entire weekend inside... cuddling... I said NO.

I didn't come all this way to sleep the entire thing away and see nobody else.

Selfish much? BTW, the night before our anniversary, he was supposed to come over to hangout so we can celebrate at midnight.

He calls me last minute to tell me that's not happening, as he feels way too tired to come over! Okay! Sure! If he pull stuff like that, then absolutely...

I stopped asking about his future and started excluding him from mine. Everytime I asked, he'd get mad.

He never knew what he'd be up to, never any clarity about events, etc. So I started making my own plans without him in them.

If he couldn't figure it out, it's not my problem to do so!

I confronted his manipulation. He would call me late at night and wake me up, tell me important info or updates, then hang up.

The next day, when I would have no recollection of the brief conversation we had the previous night, he'd get mad at me for not listening.

At some point, I felt crazy that I was apparently forgetting so many things. Turns out,

he purposefully told me them after waking me up at night to do so, when he knew I wouldn't remember.

I confronted him, he said it's not his problem I couldn't remember, and maybe he should not call me at night at all!

Tonight, I have three missed calls from him after I put my phone on DND and spent some quality time on myself.

Even a cute little message asking me what I'm up to!

Coming from the same guy who would leave me on read for days at a time and would only call me instead, as allegedly texting wasn't his thing. How cute.

I started joking back. He would often say jokes that were a bit more rough, or insulting.

Instead of taking offense, I started making them right back! Oh, how mad he gets.

Overall, I haven't done anything other than to give back the treatment he's been giving me.

He is now starting fights about me over my tone, something I said, why I didn't call him back, why I've not been texting, etc.

Sorry, babe. Texting's just not my thing!

He called me immature for mimicking his behaviour. I told him if he can do it, why can't I? And if he doesn't like it, why keep doing it?

I really like this independent version of myself I've found and I would never go back.

I want to salvage this relationship, but he needs to accept that I'm never putting him over myself anymore.

I guess it will be difficult for him as it's new for him. Is this relationship salvagable

and how do I approach such a conversation that he can be mad all he wants, but he got exactly what he asked for?

TLDR: I started treating my boyfriend the same way he treats me and he hates it.

He argues with me about the way I behave with him and how I treat him, when in reality I just started matching his energy.

I became more independent and don't rely on him for reassurence anymore, and in a way that opened up my eyes to how he was treating me.

Sometimes personal growth changes a relationship because the version of someone who once tolerated imbalance is no longer available. The OP began this relationship overly dependent on her boyfriend, and she openly recognizes that her constant attention and need for reassurance were unhealthy.

But after rebuilding friendships, hobbies, work, and independence, she discovered something uncomfortable: once she stopped doing all the emotional work, the relationship suddenly felt much emptier.

The emotional dynamic has almost completely reversed. Early on, she pursued closeness while her boyfriend wanted more freedom. When she finally gave him that space, he initially enjoyed it.

Now that she has a full life of her own, however, he appears increasingly bothered by the same behaviors he once expected her to accept: fewer messages, separate plans, delayed calls, and less emotional availability.

Her frustration makes sense. She spent months adapting to his preferred level of connection, only to discover that he dislikes experiencing that distance himself.

A fresh perspective, though, is that independence and retaliation are beginning to overlap. Some of the OP’s changes are genuinely healthy: maintaining friendships, protecting sleep, pursuing hobbies, and refusing to organize her life around a partner.

Other behaviors, deliberately copying his bland responses, returning insulting jokes, or thinking “if he does it, I can too”, suggest accumulated resentment. Matching someone’s unhealthy behavior can expose a double standard, but it rarely creates the relationship either person actually wants.

Relationship researcher John Gottman’s work describes a common **pursue-withdraw pattern**, where one partner seeks greater closeness while the other retreats.

Therapist Scott Woolley explains that when the pursuer eventually stops chasing, the relationship dynamic can shift dramatically because both partners’ behavior has been organized around that old imbalance. Unless the underlying hurt is addressed, withdrawal and criticism can continue feeding each other even after the roles change.

That insight fits this couple remarkably well. The OP once chased connection while her boyfriend controlled its availability. Now she no longer needs constant reassurance, and he is discovering that her attention was something he valued more than he realized.

His discomfort does not mean she should become dependent again. But her new independence will become healthier if she stops using his past behavior as the standard for what she permits herself to do.

The relationship may still be salvageable, but only if both people want a different relationship rather than victory in the old one. The OP should keep her independence while dropping the scorekeeping.

Her boyfriend, meanwhile, needs to acknowledge that he cannot demand freedoms for himself while resenting those same freedoms in her. If neither can move beyond “you did it first,” the relationship may already be functioning more like a competition than a partnership.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These Redditors urged OP to leave and find someone more considerate

Various-East-5266 − Truthfully just leave this loser, you’re fine on your own babe — this is straight up not how a relationship should be at any age tbh.

Fluffy-lotus606 − Girl you’re 19 you can find someone worth your time! Let this one go back to the streets

Guilty-Macaroon2948 − i think you definitely should leave him

if he is not considerate of you and your feelings then you shouldn’t even be bothered by him! wishing you the best princess

These commenters said both partners seemed happier when they stopped investing in the relationship

stupidjoy − It sounds like the only time he was ever happy in this relationship is when you got off his back, before he realized he had to put effort...

And you're happier now that you've stopped putting in the effort. You are both happier when you stop investing into each other!

Trying to fix a man to be a better partner for you is not independent behavior.

Sypsy − Too complicated to save, and probabaly not worth it. Tell him you matched his energy and he doesn't like it.

There's now no middle ground. Also, he doesn't like it because you chasing him gave him good feelings.

Everyone wants to feel wanted but he took it too far and can't reciprocate Anyway, good job finding your footing but you can't save this.

Thank him for being there for this chapter of growth and turn the page

These users felt the relationship had run its course and was no longer worth saving

Normal-Equivalent222 − Why are you still with this guy?

NicolinaN − Sweetie, it’s long overdue to call it quits. You had your puppy love, but it was never meant to be more than that.

There’s nothing here to build on.

boxprint − A LOT of teenage relationships end this way. kuddos to you for catching on now. You've asked him to grow up.

He doesn't want to. You still should. Dump him. Continue growing. Let him stay behind as the 19 yo he wants to be.

These Redditors praised OP for recognizing unhealthy patterns at such a young age

one-stupid-robot − I don't even know you, but I'm so damn proud. You figured out at 19 what many women struggle to realize until

they're much older, if ever. The boyfriend at this point is a comfort blanket, but you've outgrown him and you know it.

Raghaille1 − I'm impressed that your figured this BS out by 19 not 29. Dump him and go have an amazing life!

If she stopped “matching energy” tomorrow, would she actually want to start investing in him again? And would he do the same without requiring her to become dependent first? Those answers probably matter more than deciding who technically started the pattern.
