Impatient Passenger Cancels Uber Twice, Then Gets Furious When Someone Else Takes His Ride

Sometimes, entitlement shows up in the most unexpected places, especially when people believe their inconvenience matters more than everyone else’s situation. A simple misunderstanding can quickly turn into a public argument when someone refuses to accept that things did not go their way.

The original poster (OP) shared a surprising airport-style encounter after returning from a cruise with family. OP’s wife had just ordered an Uber and was ready to leave when another passenger rushed over, claiming the car belonged to him.

Despite having no proof and refusing to show his own ride details, the man insisted he deserved the vehicle. However, the actual reason behind the confusion made the situation much clearer. Scroll down to see why this frustrated passenger lost his ride and how the driver handled the confrontation.

'Sorry, that's no longer your Uber'

I went on a cruise recently with family and thought I'd have some entitled people stories from the cruise. Surprisingly I didn't, at least not until after.

After we disembarked my wife ordered an Uber. She gets the notification that it's only 2 minutes away! I didn't expect it that soon and was stoked.

My wife saw the car drive up so she went over to confirm with the driver while I brought the bags over.

As she was talking to the driver an irate man came running up, saying he had been waiting 30 minutes and this was HIS Uber.

My wife showed him her phone, which had the make and color of the car, license plate, and the name of the driver.

The man refused to show his phone, insisted it was his ride, and went to talk to the driver.

Turns out the man had booked this Uber but when the driver sent a message saying he was at the port but in the bathroom and would be a couple...

Then he tried to rebook and got the same driver, who said he was in the bathroom and would be a few minutes. Man cancelled the ride again.

Apparently after that as the driver was leaving the restroom he accepted our request and was there in less than 2 minutes.

Dude was pissed, yelling that he has been waiting and he should get the car. Sorry, that's not how it works.

As we were driving away I heard the man yell, "Thanks for being an ASSH*LE!" The driver yelled back, "don't cancel twice and expect a ride!"

Some people. I swear. But at least we got out of there much quicker than expected, so thanks jerk for queuing up a ride for us.

Frustration can make people feel as though they are owed a certain outcome, especially when they have already spent time waiting or dealing with inconvenience. However, feeling disappointed does not automatically mean someone has been wronged. Many everyday conflicts happen when personal expectations collide with the actual rules of a situation.

In this story, the conflict was not really about an Uber ride. It was about one passenger believing that his effort and waiting time gave him ownership over a service that he had canceled. The man appears to have focused on the fact that he had been trying to get a ride, while ignoring the important detail that he had twice ended the booking himself.

From his perspective, he felt like someone had taken his place. From the driver’s and OP’s perspective, the ride was simply accepted by another customer through the normal process.

A different perspective is that this situation reflects how people sometimes value their intentions more than their actions. The man may have thought, “I was already here first, so I deserve this car,” but the system does not operate on intention. It operates on confirmed requests. The cancellations changed the situation.

Once he ended the ride, he no longer had a claim over that particular driver. The emotional mistake was treating a canceled arrangement as if it still existed.

Behavioral psychologists often explain that people can become attached to outcomes they feel they have already earned. Psychologist Daniel Kahneman discussed how people frequently rely on mental shortcuts when evaluating situations, and one of these tendencies involves giving more weight to perceived losses than equivalent gains.

This can make people react strongly when they feel something they expected has been taken away, even if they never actually possessed it.

That perspective helps explain why the passenger became so angry. The emotional experience of “losing” the Uber may have felt unfair to him, even though the actual sequence of events did not support his argument. The driver did not give away someone else’s confirmed ride; he accepted a new request after the original passenger canceled.

The story also highlights an important lesson about shared systems. Whether it is ride services, restaurant reservations, appointments, or online purchases, people often forget that availability belongs to whoever completes the process according to the rules. Being inconvenienced is frustrating, but it does not create ownership.

Sometimes the fairest outcome is simply accepting that a mistake changed the situation. In this case, the man’s frustration was understandable, but directing it at strangers who followed the system only turned a minor inconvenience into a public argument. The ride was never stolen; it was simply no longer his.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These Redditors blamed the impatient rider and enjoyed seeing his behavior backfire

Big_Bowler8424 − That AH’s impatience worked out great for you!

Shadowrunner156 − He started all of his own issues and blamed everyone else, true entitlement to the core

Flaky_Ship4665 − Idiots don't realise how annoying booking then cancelling more than once can be, until it happens to them. Then all hell breaks loose.

arsooetica028 − Hope that driver charged him a cancellation fee

These commenters shared driver experiences showing how patience and basic courtesy make rides easier

gestaltdude − As fa former cabbie I can tell you this is far more common than you realise, particularly on busy nights like New Year's Eve.

I tell you, dropping off in a popular spot turns into a scene from the Walking Dead; so many mindless people advancing on your vehicle,

all of them thinking you are there to pick up them specifically, is almost enough to make you break out the chainsaw or katana.

And "insert name of preferred deity" help you if you made the mistake of accepting another job on the way to drop off,

because these zombies are not letting you get away to do your job properly.

Skaifyre − Had an uber driver tell me he needed to stop for gas, told me to cancel if I couldn't wait.

I thought it was kinda rude that he had said that but mainly just in how his message came across. Told him I was fine waiting.

He showed up with a red bull for me for being patient.

Lol had another pick me up n ask if I minded stopping for gas.

We stopped at one by a smoke shop n I ran in one store n he went in the other lmao! !! Be kinder lol

GovernmentEither3420 − We took our first cruise 20 years ago out of NY City. It was a great experience until we got back to NYC.

It took a couple of hours to get off the ship. Then there was an incredibly long line of people waiting for cabs and it wasn't moving.

We were running tight on time to get to the Port Authority for a bus home.

Someone walking past told us to leave the line and walk a few blocks up the street and catch a cab there.

This was pre-Uber so we didn't have any options besides a cab. We took his advice and it worked.

trekgirl75 − Whenever I needed to make a restroom stop and messaged my passenger/s, they replied with understanding and waited the extra couple of minutes.

This group discussed practical ways to avoid pickup confusion and transportation hassles

commking − I turned on a feature in my uber app, driver can't drive until I give him the 4 digit code. That would solve situations like this very quickly

Dubiousgoober − Don’t hire a s__tty Uber.

The passenger was not wrong for being annoyed about waiting. He was wrong for treating his canceled rides as if they still belonged to him.

The driver communicated. The couple verified the information. The system worked exactly as designed. Sometimes the person who causes the delay is the same person who gets angry about the delay. In this case, one traveler’s impatience turned into another traveler’s lucky break.
