He Changed His Apartment Locks After His Sister Kept Letting Herself In, Then She Tried the Old Key One More Time

Giving a family member a spare key can feel like a small favor.

For this 29-year-old man, it was supposed to be exactly that.

He gave his 26-year-old sister a key to his apartment because he occasionally traveled for work and needed someone he trusted to check on his cat. They lived only about ten minutes apart, got along reasonably well, and she had helped him several times.

For a while, everything worked perfectly.

Then his sister started treating the spare key like an open invitation.

At first, it was harmless enough. Then she started showing up without telling him. Eventually, she was bringing friends over and eating his food while he was away.

He asked her repeatedly to stop.

She kept doing it.

So he changed the locks.

Now his sister and their mother think he went too far.

AITAH for changing the locks after my sister kept letting herself into my apartment?

I'm 29M and my sister is 26F. We live about ten minutes away from each other.

We get along pretty well overall and this honestly wasn't an issue until the last couple months.

Last year I gave her a spare key to my apartment because I travel occasionally for work and she agreed to check on my cat when I'm gone.

She's probably used it for that 4 or 5 times and I've always appreciated it.

A few months ago I came home from work and she was sitting on my couch watching TV.

Apparently she had been nearby, needed to use the bathroom, and figured I wouldn't care. I thought it was a little weird but didn't make a big deal about it.

I just told her to text me first next time. Then it happened again. The second time she had stopped by to grab a jacket she left at my place.

Again, I told her I don't care if she comes over, I just want her to ask before using the key when I’m home or in town.

She acted like I was being overly formal because we’re siblings, but said okay.

About three weeks ago I noticed some leftovers missing from my fridge.

I assumed I ate them and forgot about it until my sister casually mentioned that she had stopped by on her lunch break because my apartment was closer to her...

That actually annoyed me because at that point she wasn’t even coming over for a reason involving me. She was basically using my apartment as a second apartment.

I told her pretty directly that the key was for emergencies and taking care of my cat, not so she could let herself in whenever she wanted. She apologized and...

Last Friday I got off work early and came home around 1:30. My sister was in my apartment with one of her friends. They had gotten takeout and were sitting...

I asked what they were doing there and she said they had been shopping nearby and wanted somewhere to eat before going to another store.

I got pretty pissed off and told her I had asked her multiple times not to do this.

She said she didn’t understand why it mattered because she wasn’t stealing anything or making a mess, and that I’m never bothered when she comes over while I’m actually there.

I told her that’s because **I know she’s coming over when I’m there.**

She and her friend left. I texted her later asking for my spare key back. She said she would give it back the next time she saw me.

The more I thought about it, though, the more uncomfortable I got because she’s had that key for over a year and I have no idea if she ever made...

She found out because she came over today to return the old key and tried it before knocking.

Now she’s extremely offended that I actually changed the lock. She says asking for the key back should have been enough and that changing the lock makes it seem like...

Our mom also thinks I went too far. Her argument is that my sister was being inconsiderate, but she never damaged anything or took anything besides food, and I could...

I don’t think my sister is dangerous and I don’t think she was going to rob me. I changed it because I had asked her three separate times to stop...

The only part making me question it is that she really did help me out a lot with my cat, and now I’ll have to find someone else whenever I...

I also probably could have waited to see whether returning the key solved the problem before spending money on a new lock.

The Spare Key Wasn’t Supposed to Be a Membership Card

The man had given his sister the key about a year earlier for one specific reason: emergencies and taking care of his cat while he traveled.

She used it four or five times, and he appreciated the help.

Then one afternoon, he came home from work and found her sitting on his couch watching television.

She explained that she had been nearby, needed to use the bathroom, and figured he would not mind.

He thought it was strange but decided not to make a big issue out of it.

He simply asked her to text him first next time.

A little later, it happened again.

This time, she had stopped by to pick up a jacket she had left at his apartment.

Again, he told her that she could come over, but he wanted her to ask first whenever he was home or in town.

His sister thought he was being overly formal.

They were siblings, after all.

Still, she agreed.

At least, that’s what he thought.

Then His Apartment Became Her Lunch Break Destination

A few weeks later, he noticed some leftovers missing from his refrigerator.

He assumed he had eaten them and forgotten.

Then his sister casually mentioned that she had stopped by during her lunch break because his apartment was closer to her workplace than her own.

That bothered him.

She was no longer using the key to help him.

She was using his apartment because it was convenient for her.

He reminded her directly that the key was for emergencies and looking after his cat, not for letting herself into his home whenever she wanted.

She apologized.

He thought the problem was finally over.

It wasn’t.

About three weeks later, he came home early from work and found his sister inside his apartment with a friend.

They had apparently been shopping nearby and decided to stop at his place to eat takeout before going to another store.

They were sitting at his kitchen counter like they lived there.

He was furious.

He reminded her that he had already asked multiple times for her to stop entering without permission.

Her response was that she did not understand why it mattered.

She wasn’t stealing anything.

She wasn’t making a mess.

And he never complained when she visited while he was actually home.

His answer was simple.

“That’s because I know she’s coming over when I’m there.”

That was the entire point.

The Key Came Back, But the Trust Didn’t

After his sister left, he texted her and asked for the spare key back.

She agreed to return it the next time they saw each other.

But the more he thought about it, the less comfortable he became.

She had possessed the key for more than a year. He had no idea whether she had ever made a copy.

And considering that she had repeatedly ignored his requests, he decided he did not want to take the chance.

He paid $140 to have the locks changed.

Then his sister came over to return the old key.

She tried it in the lock.

It didn’t work.

Only then did she knock.

She was furious.

To her, changing the locks made it seem like he thought she was a thief or dangerous.

Their mother agreed that his sister had been inconsiderate, but believed he had gone too far. She argued that his sister had never damaged anything and had only taken some food.

But that was exactly what the man disagreed with.

This wasn’t about whether his sister was dangerous.

It was about whether she respected his home.

A Boundary Doesn’t Become Optional Because You’re Family

The interesting thing about this situation is that the sister probably did not see herself as doing anything seriously wrong.

She knew her brother trusted her. She had a key. She was family. She wasn’t breaking furniture or stealing electronics.

But permission to enter someone’s home is not permanent simply because you have been trusted once.

The original key represented a specific privilege. She could use it to help with the cat and emergencies.

Once she started using it for convenience, the nature of the arrangement changed.

The brother also gave her several opportunities to correct the behavior. He did not immediately change the locks after the first incident. He asked her to text. Then he asked again. He explicitly explained what the key was for.

She agreed.

Then she ignored the boundary again.

And perhaps the most revealing moment came at the very end.

Even after being told to return the key, she still tried to use it before knocking.

That made his decision look a lot less dramatic.

AITAH for changing it anyway? Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

Several commenters pointed out that the sister’s attempt to use the key one final time was practically proof that he had made the right decision.

nakedoldbitch − So instead of knocking to return the key, she was going to just let herself in? Right there justified changing the lock. She was done being entitled. NTA

Ok_Tonight_3703 − NTA. “…She found out because she came over today to return the old key **and tried it before knocking**. ..”

And this is why you were right to change the locks. You repeatedly asked and then told her to stop letting herself into you apartment.

Even when returning your key she refuses to respect your request. She was wrong.

It‘s not about making a mess or stealing. It’s about basic respect. Respect for you and your home. Bringing her friend into your home to eat was rude as f__k.

Why didn’t they eat where they bought the food or go to their own apartment? Eating your food without permission is rude.

I’d be pissed if I came home to find the food that I planned to eat gone. Find someone else to feed your cat. You had a boundary and she...

Fit_Exercise7881 − The fact that she was going to use it when giving it back has me dead. NTA

Others emphasized that the issue was not whether she was stealing or damaging property. It was that she repeatedly ignored a clearly stated boundary.

Triatomine − NTA. For 10 years my brother and I have lived less than a 10 min walk from each other. We both have keys to each other's homes for...

In 10 years his wife came into my house once without asking. She was walking her dog and was about to poop her pants. She called me immediately after to...

He has never come in without asking. I went to his house one time without being invited.

My car window froze open and I parked in his heated garage for 10 min to let it thaw out so I could close it. I didnt go in the...

Long story short, your sister should know better.

GhostLeopard_666 − NTA, its really weird she just let her friend into your apartment to eat. Makes you wonder how often shes done that and you have no idea.

ObjectiveRepulsive18 − I would have advised a keypad lock, not much more expensive than a key lock.

Then she can text you during an emergency and you can give her a code, but change it later. NTA people who abuse a privilege, lose it.

Others suggested getting a keypad lock instead, so he could provide temporary access if he needed someone to care for his cat.

LydiaStarDawg − NTA, she seems the type to have a spare copy she "forgot" about.

Nothing_Special5645 − NTA, you told her politely that she was crossing a boundary and she decided to ignore you, repeatedly. That’s on her, not you.

CatsMom4Ever − NTA  the fact that she told you multiple time she wouldn't come over without telling you, then did it was enough.

Then when you told her to give you back your spare key, she did it AGAIN! NO. She obviously doesn't care.

Your mom thinks that's fine that your sister takes advantage of you. And she DID steal from you.   She took your food.

Just because it wasn't a lot of money doesn't make it not theft.   Sure. She took care of your cat. That doesn't make your apartment her second home.

Get another cat sitter. Your sister will give you a huffy non-apology and just be more sneaky when she abuses your trust.

CanadianJediCouncil − **She’s just pissed because the copy she just made—before she came to return your** ***original*** **key—is now useless.

The $140 probably wasn’t really about the lock.

It was about the moment he realized that asking nicely was no longer working.

His sister had been given trust, then treated that trust as permission to do whatever she wanted.

She had been asked to stop.

She agreed.

Then she did it again.

Changing the locks was not an accusation that she was a criminal. It was a practical response to someone repeatedly ignoring the rules of his own home.

And honestly, the fact that she tried the old key while returning it might have been the strongest argument for changing the locks in the first place.

Was changing the locks a reasonable final boundary, or should he have simply waited to see whether getting the key back solved the problem?
