Fiancé Buys AI Glasses for Home, But His Partner Feels Like She’s Living Under Surveillance

Privacy inside your own home can feel very different from privacy anywhere else. I think most people expect home to be the one place where they can relax without wondering whether a camera, microphone, or smart device is quietly becoming part of every ordinary moment.

One Redditor recently found herself struggling with that exact fear after her fiancé bought prescription Ray-Ban Meta glasses. He loves new technology and sees the glasses as something that could make daily life easier, while she already has serious concerns about data collection, artificial intelligence, and constant surveillance.

She asked him not to wear them around the house, but after experimenting with the features, he wanted to use them much more often. Now they are stuck between personal autonomy and shared privacy. Scroll down to see what sparked the disagreement and how people thought this newly engaged couple might find common ground.

'My fiance (30M) bought Meta glasses to wear at home and I (30F) can't get over the feeling of being exposed. How do we resolve this?'

My fiance and I have been together for about 6.5 years. We have lived together for a year and just got engaged.

He has always been into tech and gadgets and enjoys buying the newest toys on the market.

I've benefitted from his enthusiasm and research in picking out my phone, tablet, and smart watch.

Clearly, I'm not opposed to tech and engage with it all day every day.

I've also always shared as little of my data as possible, opting for the most privacy possible in my settings and resisting some products that don't provide those options.

I also have complex feelings about AI and tend to avoid use of generative AI.

I live in an area currently battling a massive proposed data center complex that would greatly impact utilities and property value here.

I have complex feelings about the impact of AI on children, jobs, and the environment. My fiance knows all of this and we've had extensive arguments about this.

On Friday, my fiance informed me he had gotten a new prescription and ordered new glasses. Great!

Then he said, "and I also bought something I know you're not going to be a fan of" and he proceeded to tell me he bought prescription Ray Bans with...

I told him I was deeply uncomfortable with it and he assured me it would mostly be for filming concerts or travel.

I told him I did not want them being used in the house. He would have to use regular glasses at home.

Well, now he's had a day to set them up and explore all of the features and he wants to wear them all the time.

He told me he wouldn't record in the house but I can't shake the feeling that this is a massive i__asion of privacy.

It's not something I'm comfortable with. I want there to be some space in my life where I feel like I'm not under surveillance.

I recognize our phones, laptops, and watches do this but it feels different to be staring into the camera everyday and into the face of AI.

His point is that these features will make his life meaningfully easier and that frankly, it's not my place to tell him what glasses he can wear as that is...

How can I express my concerns or are my concerns irrelevant? What are the real risks here? How do we navigate this while living together to find a compromise?

A home is often the one place where people expect to feel completely at ease. It is where people relax, make mistakes, have private conversations, and exist without feeling observed.

When new technology enters that space, the concern is not always about the device itself. Sometimes it is about what the device represents: a change in the feeling of safety, privacy, and control within a shared environment.

In this situation, the OP’s discomfort was not simply about a pair of smart glasses. She has a long-standing concern about privacy, data collection, and the broader effects of emerging technology, and her fiancé already knew those concerns existed.

The emotional conflict came from feeling that a major decision affecting their shared home was treated as an individual purchase rather than something that deserved a conversation between partners.

For her, the glasses represented the possibility of constant recording and the feeling of being watched. For him, they represented convenience, curiosity, and a useful new tool.

The disagreement also highlights how two people can interpret the same technology differently. The fiancé may see the glasses like a phone, smartwatch, or other everyday device that improves his life.

The OP sees them as different because cameras and artificial intelligence are directly involved in her physical environment. Neither perspective exists in isolation. Technology can provide benefits while also creating questions about consent, privacy, and comfort.

A different perspective is that the conflict may not only be about the glasses but about how each partner understands shared decision-making.

The fiancé is correct that he has autonomy over his personal belongings. However, living together often means personal choices can affect another person’s sense of security.

Similarly, the OP’s discomfort is valid, but finding a solution may require discussing specific behaviors rather than treating the device itself as unacceptable. A clear agreement about when and where the glasses are used may be more productive than arguing over whether the technology is good or bad.

Privacy researchers often explain that technology creates new challenges because people do not always have control over when data collection happens around them.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation has discussed how emerging technologies involving cameras, artificial intelligence, and connected devices raise questions about consent, data collection, and individual privacy rights. Their work emphasizes that users should understand how technology operates and consider how it affects others nearby.

This perspective helps explain why the OP’s reaction is about more than fear of being recorded. She is asking for a sense of personal space where she does not feel constantly connected to a device capable of capturing information. A

t the same time, the fiancé may not intend to violate her privacy and may see responsible use as enough protection.

The healthiest solution is likely not deciding who is completely right or wrong. Instead, the couple needs a shared understanding of boundaries.

They could discuss rules such as no recording indoors, removing the glasses during private conversations, or agreeing on spaces where technology-free time matters. A successful compromise would recognize both realities: one partner values innovation, while the other values privacy.

In a strong relationship, neither person should have to ignore what matters deeply to them in order for the other person to feel respected.

See what others had to share with OP:

These commenters agreed that wearing the glasses is his choice, but leaving the relationship is also the partner’s choice

peakpenguins − it's not my place to tell him what glasses he can wear as that is his choice to make.

Sure, but it is your choice whether to be around him when he's wearing them or not.

Frankly I'd tell him that if he's going to be wearing them in the house, I'll be in the other room not interacting with him.

He wants you to feel comfortable, he can take them off.

NorthernLitUp − He's right. It's his choice to wear those glasses in the house.

It's also your choice to decide not to be in a house where you are potentially being recorded all of the time or to be in a relationship with someone

who cares so little about your feelings that they refuse to wear other glasses in the house. He sounds self absorbed.

I certainly hope your wedding is not imminent and that there's time to change your mind about this guy.

At minimum, it's time to draw a line in the sand about those glasses being worn in the house or in any living area that you both share (hotels etc).

He has another pair of glasses and he can wear them in the house and around you. The fact that he's choosing not to says a lot.

IcyCantaloupe7004 − You can't control if he buys or wears these glasses. Buuuuuut. .. its okay if this is a deal-breaker for you.

These commenters suggested discussing the issue further and helping him understand how the glasses affect others

2workigo − Please explain specifically how exactly they will make his life “meaningfully easier. ” Does he have a disability they will assist with?

Glittering_Water_245 − Tell him that if you were filming him all day, wouldn’t that make him uncomfortable? Try to get him to see things from your perspective

These Redditors criticized his attitude and viewed the glasses as a sign of selfishness or poor consideration

MoxieOHara − “it's not my place to tell him what glasses he can wear as that is his choice to make”.

Yeeeah, no. The thing is, his liberty to do what he wants is highlighting his selfishness, and lack of care about your feelings.

So, yeah dude, wear your stupid glasses, alienate and upset your girlfriend in her own home - well done.

He’s illustrating quite clearly that your feelings are much less important than his latest fad.

Dragonshatetacos − Do you really want to marry a self absorbed creep?

Low_Bluejay510 − Only creeps wear meta glasses

These Redditors strongly opposed the glasses and viewed them as inappropriate in shared spaces

bafadam − You leave because, Jesus f__k, who is buying meta glasses for anything but the weirdest spycam s__t?

StiffAssedBrit − Dump him. Anyone who wears Meta glasses, or their equivalents, is a creep

and it needs to be made legal for us to just take them off them and stamp them into dust!

In the UK, one pub chain has just banned them, and I hope that becomes a common thing.

Cold-Mastodon-341 − Nope nope nope nope nope nope

These users raised privacy concerns and questioned whether the devices could record or collect information unintentionally

AceyAceyAcey − Do you know, when they’re not actively recording, what features do they still have, and do those features require continual access to sound and images?

You have the right to not have it listening to or watching you without your consent,

so if those features do have it passively listening/watching you all the time, I’d suggest you give him three options:

(1) don’t use the glasses around you and instead keep them in their case,

(2) he covers the camera lenses and microphones around you for example with tape and putty, respectively, or

(3) you won’t be around him any more.

Jaykaybabay − I wouldn’t even hang out with someone who was wearing meta glasses- I can’t imagine having them in the house all the time.

I don’t even have a ring doorbell bc I’m anti surveillance state. This would be a dealbreaker for me, especially because of his dismissal of your concerns.

Rose8918 − Didn’t it already come out that it’s like call-center type workers in Africa doing half the “ai” functions on these glasses?

Imagine you leave any identifying documents out and then that just goes into the ether.

Pyotrperse − The creator of the glasses himself said that even when they say they’re not recording that they actually are in fact recording “for privacy” (or lack thereof).

He also said their data centres are always sifting through and sorting the footage “for privacy and to improve ai features” even when the recording feature isn’t turned on.

This tech is a major dividing point in how we live our daily lives,

I personally don’t want to be monitored 24/7 under the guise of “new tech” or at bare minimum not in my home that is supposed to be my family’s safe...

Would you be comfortable living with someone who regularly wore AI glasses at home? Or would that cross a personal boundary? Share your thoughts below!
