Uncle Boss Denies IT Guy Overtime Pay, He Ghosts Calls After 5 PM

Family ties can complicate workplace dynamics, especially when your boss is your uncle and expects free labor after hours. For an IT worker, late-night client calls and long drives were just part of the job until he decided to ask for fair pay. His request for overtime compensation, however, was met with a harsh reality check from his boss.

Instead of negotiating, the uncle-boss shut down the idea, insisting overtime doesn’t exist in their business. That bold claim sparked a clever response from the employee, who took the directive literally and changed his approach to after-hours work.

Curious how he turned his boss’s words into a lesson in boundaries? Scroll down to see how this family feud unfolded in the office.

One Redditor shared how their boyfriend, an IT worker, stopped answering after-hours calls after his uncle-boss refused overtime pay

'So there is no such thing as overtime, great god to know!?'

My BF’s boss is a bit of a d__k, but unfortunately, he’s also his uncle.

My bf works in IT. He handles a lot of complaints regarding servers and general IT stuff.

For the past three years, he has worked overtime for free. (It’s difficult to say no to family)

He answers his personal phone and has to drive long distances to fix problems clients are having, sometimes at 10 at night.

Recently, we’ve been trying to save money to make a life together.

So my bf decided to ask the boss to finally get paid for all the overtime hours he will be working from now on.

The boss is livid. He states that he will not pay my bf overtime money

and he shouldn’t ask again, and that he should be grateful for his job.

He concludes by saying that there is NO SUCH THING AS OVERTIME IN THIS BUSINESS!!

Can you see where the malicious compliance comes in yet?

So my bf now does not answer any calls after 5 or before 8.

The boss now has to take all those calls and drive the ridiculous distances himself.

BF gets called in and is asked why he isn’t picking up his phone because the clients are getting really upset at him.

Bf’s answer: "I’m sorry, but you said… There is no such thing as overtime." I’ve never been more proud!!

The situation described highlights a critical issue in workplace dynamics: the expectation of unpaid overtime, particularly when compounded by familial relationships.

The boyfriend’s experience, working in IT under his uncle’s management, underscores a common challenge where personal and professional boundaries blur, often to the detriment of fair labor practices.

This case raises concerns about workplace exploitation, fair compensation, and the importance of enforcing clear boundaries. Unpaid overtime is a pervasive issue in many industries, including IT, where after-hours support is often expected.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, non-exempt employees are entitled to overtime pay at a rate of at least one-and-a-half times their regular pay for hours worked over 40 per week.

If the boyfriend is a non-exempt employee, his uncle’s refusal to pay overtime could violate labor laws, assuming the business operates in the U.S. This legal framework exists to protect workers from being coerced into unpaid work, regardless of familial ties.

The uncle’s assertion that “there is no such thing as overtime in this business” dismisses both legal and ethical standards. A 2023 study by the Economic Policy Institute found that wage theft, including unpaid overtime, costs U.S. workers billions annually.

The boyfriend’s decision to stop answering after-hours calls reflects a strategic enforcement of boundaries, often termed “malicious compliance.” By adhering strictly to his uncle’s statement, he protects his time while exposing the impracticality of the policy.

Career coach Alison Green advises that setting such boundaries is essential for preventing burnout and maintaining professional respect. However, this approach risks workplace tension, particularly in a family business where personal and professional conflicts intertwine.

For resolution, the boyfriend should document all instances of unpaid overtime and consult a labor attorney if the issue persists, especially if he’s non-exempt.

Open communication with his uncle, emphasizing legal obligations and mutual respect, could also help. If the situation remains untenable, exploring job opportunities elsewhere may be necessary to ensure fair treatment and financial stability for his future plans.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These Redditors cheered the boyfriend’s stand, urging him to find a job that values him

ensign53 − I love your boyfriend. But in all seriousness, good for him!

It really takes a lot of courage to stand up to a boss — and a family member.

soulsurvivor78 − Why don't you tell your BF to take his skills elsewhere and get paid what he’s worth?

Then you two could save faster. He has the experience, that’s the hard part!

Great story too — don’t work for family, it can get messy.

kabrandon − As somebody else in IT that deals with client servers, there absolutely is such a thing as overtime in his business.

If he's been there for a year or two, he should get out and find himself a real company to work for.

Family or not, that’s a s__tty boss.

These users called out unpaid overtime as illegal wage theft, demanding justice and accountability

[Reddit User] − Pretty sure it's against the law to work OT and not be paid for it.

ComradeCuddlefish − Unpaid overtime is an epidemic.

It's a shame almost no politicians are willing to stand up for working people and end this practice.

tremors01 − It’s called wage theft.

These commenters shared IT burnout stories, slamming exploitative bosses and unrealistic expectations

ecp710 − I work in IT as well. Management loved using the “you’re salary, no overtime” spiel.

I was on call 24/7/365, and I burnt out after a few years. IT really needs to form a union; this behavior is rampant.

Sparcrypt − I've been an IT professional for 15 years, good on him.

That kind of abuse is common even when you're not working for s__tty family members.

If one person can’t handle the workload in 8 hours, they need to hire more staff.

[Reddit User] − For many salaried people, especially in tech, there isn’t overtime pay.

They throw free lunches or bonuses, but time is always business time.

When you evaluate a job, consider the unpaid hours and whether the salary is worth it.

These Redditors shared tales of family job woes, from unpaid labor to malicious data withholding

asphaltdragon − And this is why I refuse to work for family again.

Lost most of my teenage years and early adulthood doing that.

I could’ve spent those ten years doing something else.

Bigjobs69 − There’s nothing worse than working for a family that treats your time as money.

My dad paid me £3 a piece for something he sold for £296 each. That was when he lost my trust.

gargovich − Worked for my uncle, who cut my final pay claiming “training costs.”

So I kept all the company’s raw data and left him with nothing but empty files. #DontWorkWithFamily

This IT worker’s phone-silencing stunt turned his uncle’s “no overtime” decree into a glorious lesson in boundaries. Was his after-hours blackout a brilliant move or a risky family feud starter?

Would you stick it out with a stingy family boss or jump ship like he’s planning? One thing’s clear: his stand proves loyalty shouldn’t mean free labor. Ever dealt with a boss who expected too much? Spill your workplace revenge stories below!
