Neighbor Kept Stealing Electricity From Their Truck, So They Finally Took Action

Having difficult neighbors is frustrating enough, but things become much more serious when they start helping themselves to something you pay for. I think most people would be irritated after discovering a stranger repeatedly using their electricity, especially after making it perfectly obvious that permission was never given.

One Canadian Redditor faced exactly that problem during the freezing winter months, when their truck needed to remain plugged in outside.

Someone next door had apparently discovered the extension cord and started connecting another cable to it for their own use. On one occasion, the neighbors even unplugged the OP’s truck to take the power for themselves.

Tossing their cord back into their yard seemed like a clear enough message, but it soon appeared again. With concerns about confrontation and possible retaliation, the OP wondered how far to escalate things. Scroll down to see what happened next.

A homeowner discovers a neighbor repeatedly stealing electricity by connecting to his vehicle’s power cord during winter

'Neighbour keeps stealing power'

I live in Canada, and during the winters it gets cold enough that we have to plug in our vehicles when not in use.

Well in the back alley where we park the truck (no plug in on the front of the house, and street parking is a mess anyways)

I've caught an extension cord being run from our extension cord, straight into the neighbour's yard.

The first time, they even unplugged our truck so they could use the cord.

We just unplugged their cord and tossed it back into their yard, hoping that they would get the hint.

But this morning their extension cord was plugged in AGAIN.

I'm unsure what to do in this situation. Do I call the police? Would they care?

I can't NOT have the cord back there, as the truck has to be plugged in. What should I do?

EDIT: Sorry for the late reply, I wasn't expecting to get so many responses!

I won't deny, I definitely considered cutting the cord or just taking it, but I wouldn't put it past them to retaliate.

I ended up calling non-emergency and explaining the situation.

They took my explanation/info and said they would send officers.

But the officers came to my house and I wasn't home cuz I had to work, so I missed them. At least it's on file I guess? I feel bad...

As for the people telling me to just go tell my neighbours not to, I live in the sketchy part of town so I kinda don't wanna get stabbed?

Their backyard is full of garbage and junk and there's no door on the back of the house?

They have a bunch of stolen recycle bins and garbage cans in the back too (two of which they stole from me) and it's not uncommon to hear shouting from...

My other neighbour (a good neighbour! She's told me whenever she sees the cord) said that house has gotten a lot of complaints,

including one from herself, because they parked horizontally behind her vehicle in the back and boxed her in.

Many neighborhood conflicts begin with something that appears small. A borrowed item, an ignored request, or a minor inconvenience can slowly become a serious problem when one person starts treating another person’s property as if it belongs to them.

The frustration is rarely just about the object itself. It is about feeling that your space, effort, and boundaries are not being respected.

In this situation, the OP was not simply upset about an extension cord. The cord represented a larger violation: someone repeatedly using a resource that belonged to them without permission and even unplugging their vehicle in the process.

During a Canadian winter, a vehicle plug is not just a convenience; it can be an important part of keeping a car functional in extreme temperatures. The OP’s concern came from having a reasonable need interrupted by a neighbor who continued the behavior after being given a clear signal to stop.

The emotional dynamic also involves a feeling of vulnerability. Many people might see the solution as simply confronting the neighbor, but the OP explained concerns about retaliation and the neighbor’s unpredictable behavior. This changes the situation.

A boundary is not only about what someone has the right to say; it is also about choosing a response that protects personal safety.

A different perspective is that the neighbor may have viewed the situation as harmless borrowing, especially if they needed power during cold weather. However, the important difference is consent. A favor requires permission, and repeated use after being told no changes the situation completely.

Needing something does not create ownership over another person’s property. The appropriate solution would have been to ask, not to secretly connect to someone else’s power source.

Experts who study conflict resolution often emphasize that effective boundaries require clear communication and appropriate escalation when those boundaries are ignored.

The Community Mediation Calgary Society explains that many neighborhood disputes improve when concerns are addressed early through respectful communication, but situations involving repeated violations or safety concerns may require outside support rather than direct confrontation.

This perspective helps explain why the OP’s decision to document the issue and contact non-emergency services was reasonable.

The goal was not to create unnecessary conflict. It was to create a record, seek guidance, and avoid a potentially unsafe confrontation. Protecting personal property does not require someone to put themselves in a risky situation.

The larger lesson is that being a good neighbor does not mean allowing others to repeatedly cross your boundaries.

Communities work because people respect shared spaces and private property. A small act of consideration, such as asking before using something that belongs to someone else, can prevent a minor disagreement from becoming a much larger dispute.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These commenters agreed that using someone else’s electricity without permission is theft and should be addressed seriously

Own-Organization-532 − Cut the cord

BrotherNatureNOLA − I don't live in Canada, but where I live, energy theft is a specific crime.

slamnm − I am not in Canada but yes I would call the police. This is blatant theft.

Anyone who would unplug your vehicle and plug theirs in instead deserves no consideration IMHO

Edits::: fixed veto and desert and general mess from replying too fast on my phone.

Edit: fixed to to too because too many errors

fiestafan73 − I’m kind of amazed by the people saying talk to them. These people are using your electricity and letting you pay for it. That is theft.

They know you know and are still trying it. Nobody that brazen is going to be someone you can just have a conversation with.

Cut the cord in half, and report them to the power company.

Post a no trespassing sign in the entrance to your back yard. If they do it again, file police charges for trespassing.

These users suggested various ways to disable or block access to the extension cord, often through humorous revenge ideas

DominantDave − Put the end of their plug into a milk jug full of water and let it freeze

Fill the plug on their cord with super glue

Cut the end off their cord and toss it onto their roof so they can’t fix it until the next time they clean their gutters.

Keep doing this until they run out of cords.

Put a receptacle lock on your receptacle Get a sms enabled 120v loss of power alarm and use it under your hood at the end of your extension cord.

You’ll get a text message whenever they unplug your truck and you can go deal with it and them.

bisforbnaynay − You can get one of those locking covers for the outlet. But they could just plug into your extension cord again.

Unless you cut the end of the cord off and wire it to another outdoor electrical box with another one of those locking covers.

Personally I'd probably unplug the cord, fill a container full of water and let the plug freeze into it overnight.

Or you could just talk to them?

[Reddit User] − Wire another identical cord up to 240v and leave it available.

The first time they smoke whatever they plug into the cord should get the message across.

These Redditors recommended documenting the behavior with cameras and involving authorities if it continues

Knitsanity − Unplug. Cut the cord. Toss the pieces back over the fence. Can't miss that message.

Oh. ..and cameras on your vehicle for the inevitable payback.

NoParticular2420 − Cameras placed out back and get the proof and call the police … The gall of some people .

GirlStiletto − 1) Get a camera and catch them tresspassing and stealing power.

2) Call the cops Anything else is just going to become a neighbor war. Get the cops involved and its now official.

These commenters shared practical methods for preventing others from accessing the power source

bestuzernameever − Plug your block heater in under the hood and close the latch so they can’t get at the plug end

Hot-Win2571 − After you unplug their cord, zip tie it to things.

Their mailbox post, the handle on their mailbox, their wheels, their windshield wipers, their hood, their fence, their gate.

These users shared personal stories or jokes about cutting off access after repeated boundary violations

Stefie25 − God this brings back memories. One of my neighbours did that when I first bought my house.

First time I talked to them. 2nd & 3rd time I unplugged it & chucked the cord over the fence back into their yard.

4th time, I heard them jumping my fence at like 2 am, & I went right out & unplugged it, chopped the head off the plug

& threw it back through their window (it was open) and screamed at them to f__k right off. It was very effective & they stopped after that.

Prestigious-Rent-284 − Steal the cord, just pull it and give it a good yank and make it disappear. What are they going to do, come ask you for their cord?

[Reddit User] − Cut the cord after you unplug it. Every time.

A simple extension cord turned into a serious neighborhood conflict when one homeowner discovered someone repeatedly using his electricity without permission. Many readers supported taking formal steps rather than escalating through personal revenge.

The situation highlights a common boundary issue: helping a neighbor is a choice, not an obligation.

If someone repeatedly takes advantage of your kindness, where should the line be drawn? Was contacting authorities the right move, or should the neighbor have received one more warning?
