Adoptive Mom Refuses Daughter Contact With Bio Parents, Now The 9-Year-Old Calls Her Selfish

A nine-year-old’s school project turned into a family storm when her adoptive parents tried to block her from contacting her biological parents. What started as a simple assignment, writing about where she comes from, spiraled into a battle over identity, trust, and control.

The girl, named Aubrey, wanted to reach out to her birth mother and father to understand her history. Her adoptive mom refused, insisting it was “what’s best.” But Aubrey fired back, saying they were being selfish. The internet had plenty to say, and the story took a surprising turn when an update revealed a video call that changed everything. Want to know how this family drama unfolded? Let’s dive in.

One adoptive mom, age 40, shared how her 9-year-old daughter, adopted at birth, suddenly wanted to contact her biological parents

Adoption brings with it unique joys and challenges, but one of the most common questions adoptive parents face is how to handle their child’s curiosity about their birth family. Experts agree that children have a natural need to understand their identity and origins, and blocking that exploration can cause unintended harm.

The Child Welfare Information Gateway highlights that openness in adoption, even in small ways, supports healthier identity formation for children.

For many adoptees, questions about “who I look like,” “where I come from,” or “why I was placed for adoption” arise as early as elementary school. A lack of honest answers can lead to confusion, mistrust, or resentment toward adoptive parents.

Psychologists emphasize that adoptive parents should not see a child’s curiosity as a rejection of their family, but as part of healthy development.

Dr. Harold Grotevant, a leading adoption researcher, notes that contact with birth families when safe and appropriate can actually strengthen the bond between children and their adoptive parents by reducing secrecy and fear. When children feel their adoptive parents are supportive of their search for information, they are less likely to pursue it in secret later on.

Age also matters. The American Academy of Pediatrics explains that by ages 8–12, children begin to grasp more complex concepts about family, biology, and identity.

At this stage, they may be emotionally ready to begin age-appropriate contact, such as exchanging letters, supervised calls, or video chats. Professionals suggest that the involvement of adoptive parents in these early steps helps maintain trust and guidance.

Therapists often recommend framing conversations around reassurance: reminding the child they are deeply loved, while validating their need to know more about their history. Adoption support groups and family counselors can also help guide these delicate conversations, giving both parents and children tools to navigate emotions and boundaries safely.

Check out how the community responded:

Many Reddit users insisted the mother was selfish for blocking her daughter’s right to know her roots.

These commenters warned that shutting Aubrey down would only breed resentment, even predicting she’d cut ties at 18

One user delivered the harshest response, saying adoptees who are denied access to their origins often struggle with identity from as young as 8

For Aubrey, the nine-year-old at the center, meeting her birth mom wasn’t about replacing her family but filling in the missing pages of her storybook. By opening the door instead of slamming it, her adoptive parents may have safeguarded their bond.

Do you think parents should delay these conversations until kids are older or is honesty and access always the healthier path? How would you balance protection with identity in this emotional minefield? Share your thoughts below!
