They Booked a Weeklong Holiday, and Their Daughter Was Furious They Hadn’t Asked Permission

For years, these grandparents had happily helped their daughters by looking after their grandchildren for free. They never expected payment, and they never treated babysitting as a burden. It was simply something they did because they loved their family.

Between feeding three young children, changing nappies, washing clothes after accidents, and providing regular childcare, they had become an important part of their grandchildren’s routine.

So when the couple found a great deal on a hotel they loved in Tunisia, they did what most people would do. They booked it.

The holiday was scheduled for one week in early November, and they gave their daughter around 90 days’ notice.

They thought that was more than reasonable.

Apparently, their eldest daughter disagreed.

Here’s The Original Post:

'AITAH for booking a holiday in November?'

So, my wife and I child mind our 2 daughter's kids. One is 5yo, one 2yrs, the other 18mths. We do this free of charge because they're our grandchildren.

My wife's parents minded our children when they were younger, so we're just paying it forward.

We feed them, provide nappies for the youngest, a laundry service when accidents happen. And we don't ask for a penny in return.

Yesterday, we saw a good deal for a hotel we like to visit in Tunisia, for a week in early November. So we went ahead and booked it.

Our youngest daughter was perfectly ok with this. But the eldest, of which 2 of the kids are hers, took offence, saying we should have run it past her first...

And now we have put her in the position of trying to get someone else to look after the kids that week, or she will have to take time off...

We have given her 90 days notice of our holiday. It just seems to us that she is being very ungrateful for the help we provide..

So are we being the assholes in booking this holiday without consulting our daughter first?

A Holiday Suddenly Became a Family Problem

The couple explained that they regularly look after three grandchildren. One is five, another is two, and the youngest is 18 months old.

They provide all of this childcare without asking their daughters for money.

There is food, nappies for the youngest child, laundry when the inevitable accidents happen, and all the other little responsibilities that come with caring for three small children.

They see it as their way of paying forward the help they once received. Their wife’s parents had looked after their children when they were young, so now they were doing something similar for their grandchildren.

Nobody had forced them to make that choice.

They wanted to help.

That made their eldest daughter’s reaction especially surprising.

After the grandparents booked their holiday, their youngest daughter had no problem with it. Their eldest daughter, however, took offence.

Her argument was that her parents should have checked with her before booking the trip to make sure the dates worked for her.

The grandparents were stunned.

They had not booked a weekend away on short notice. They had given approximately three months’ notice for a single week.

Yet their daughter now had to find alternative childcare for her two children, or potentially take time off work herself.

Suddenly, the grandparents were wondering whether they had somehow done something wrong by making plans for their own lives.

Free Childcare Can Quietly Become an Expectation

The uncomfortable part of situations like this is how quickly generosity can become routine.

At first, the grandparents were helping because they wanted to. Over time, however, their childcare had apparently become such a normal part of their daughter’s life that their absence felt like a disruption rather than something she needed to plan around.

Psychologists who study family boundaries often point out that healthy relationships require people to recognize where one person’s responsibilities end and another person’s begin. A generous family member can offer support, but that support does not automatically become an obligation simply because it has been provided consistently.

That distinction is particularly important with grandparents.

They can be loving, involved grandparents while still having their own marriages, friendships, hobbies, holidays, and plans.

The grandparents here were not abandoning their grandchildren. They were taking one week for themselves and giving plenty of warning.

Their daughter’s frustration may have been understandable from a practical standpoint, especially if arranging childcare is difficult. But expecting her parents to obtain permission before making their own holiday plans is a different matter.

These are her children, after all.

Let's dive into the reactions from Reddit:

One commenter pointed out that three months’ notice was more than enough time to make arrangements.

Equivalent_Lemon_319 − Lol, it’s 2-3 months notice. NTA

psoriasaurus_rex − NTA.  You gave her three months notice. If she ends up needing the week off, that’s still an excellent trade for free full time childcare for two children.

Top-Bit85 − NTA. I also provide free child care to my grandkids and if one of my children reacted this way I'd be very annoyed.

You are giving her plenty of notice. Perhaps you need to further indulge yourselves in your retirement so this entitled daughter learns just how much your help is worth.

Another noted that even if the daughter needed to take a few days off work, that seemed like a reasonable trade-off considering how much free childcare she normally received.

EnvironmentalLuck515 − NTA. Stop watching her kids so she gets the message that you are not her staff.

Fun-Traffic7809 − NTA, lots of grandparents dont help look after their grandkids at all. You go above and beyond.

You are still entitled to have and enjoy your life, including taking holidays as and when you want to. Your daughter needs a reality check. They are her children and...

OttersAreCute215 − NTA

You are allowed to manage your own schedule

Several people emphasized that the grandparents were not employees.

Status_Side_3338 − NTA. Your daughter seems entitled. You seem to show up as grandparents, but the thing is: you are not just grandparents.

You are also husband and wife. You have your own life. And you informed them months! !! In advance to make adjustments. That is totally reasonable.

GeminiAtl − Go, have fun. And remind your daughter that what you do for her you do out of love for her and your Grandkids, but it is not your...

You gave her plenty of notice to find another family member, a friend or a paid babysitter to watch them.

It's only a week, which I assume means 5 days since the parents will be home on the weekend.

It isn't the end of the world. If she has to, she can take a couple days off and her husband can take a couple of days off to watch...

CuriousWolverine7144 − Absolutely NTA at ALL. Time for daughter to stop being a daughter for 5 minutes and learn how to be a MOM.

MaryPink60 − NTA. Frankly your daughter is behaving like a spoiled brat. You guys deserve a holiday, she’ll just have to make other arrangements.

The Bigger Issue Wasn’t the Holiday

The Tunisia trip was probably never really about Tunisia.

The bigger issue was expectation.

If the grandparents had routinely told their daughter, “We’ll check with you before making any plans,” then perhaps she could reasonably have expected consultation.

But according to the story, there was no such agreement.

They found a deal they liked, booked it, and immediately gave her around 90 days to make alternative arrangements.

That seems less like abandoning an obligation and more like communicating a schedule change.

Of course, the grandparents could still have handled the conversation gently. They might acknowledge that finding childcare can be stressful and offer to help their daughter think through alternatives.

But sympathy does not require surrendering the boundary.

Their daughter can be frustrated.

She can be inconvenienced.

She can even wish they had chosen a different week.

What she cannot reasonably demand is that her parents stop making independent decisions because she has become accustomed to their free childcare.

Final Thoughts

The grandparents aren’t wrong for wanting a holiday.

They have spent years helping their family, asking for nothing in return. Taking one week away does not erase all of that generosity.

If anything, this situation may be a useful reminder that unpaid family help should remain a gift, not quietly transform into an obligation.

Their daughter has plenty of time to arrange childcare, and the grandparents deserve to enjoy their trip without feeling guilty.

Sometimes the healthiest thing grandparents can say is also the simplest:

“We love you, we love the kids, and we’ll see you when we get back from Tunisia.”

And honestly, after looking after three young children for free, they probably deserve the break.
