Pregnant Woman Suspects MIL Is Holding Onto Car Seat to Force Her Way Into Delivery Room

Preparing for a baby should be an exciting time, but sometimes the people around expecting parents can make the experience far more stressful than it needs to be.

Even small things can start feeling like a power struggle when boundaries have already been tested.

The original poster (OP) was expecting her first baby and thought her biggest family worries had finally settled.

However, after her MIL started making comments about the upcoming birth, OP began questioning whether certain “helpful” gestures had hidden expectations attached.

With the due date approaching and hospital boundaries already decided, OP found herself wondering if she was overthinking the situation or noticing a real pattern. Read on to see what happened next.

Pregnant couple worries their MIL may be holding onto a baby essential to force her way into their hospital plans

'Suspect MIL is holding the car seat hostage to secure a hospital visit?'

I used to come here about my mum, but since announcing pregnancy my

mum has mellowed and my MIL has... not.

Bubs is due on 22nd December. We've been vague and said "end of

December" but didn't add on too much time because we didn't want to

give false ideas about Christmas (we won't be going anywhere or having

anyone over, whether bubs has arrived or not).

MIL is house/ dog sitting over Christmas for a friend who is going to see

their mum overseas. MIL panicked when she was told the dates and said

"well we'll just have to bring the 3 dogs to the hospital!" DH swears this was a joke.

One of these dogs is huge and can comfortably put it's front paws on the

shoulders of a 6 foot tall man. Another is her very small but very bad

tempered Boston Terrier. It had better have been a joke because that is

100,000% not happening.

Within hours of being sent the registry MIL bought the car seat. I'm very

appreciative of this. I think it was the most expensive item on there. At the

time, the nursery was a spare bedroom, so MIL said she would keep hold of

it until we have the space. Fair enough.

She has bought many smaller items since then. Clothes, muslins, books,

cute hooded towels. She has brought these to us in 2 or 3 batches. The bed

has been removed from the spare bedroom. We have space. She knows

this. But she has not brought the car seat.

Maybe I'm being paranoid. Maybe she just hasn't had chance. There is loads

of time until December. But I cannot shake the feeling, especially given her

"joke" about bringing the dogs, that she is holding on to the car seat so

that she HAS to be allowed to come to the hospital.

For the record, this isn't happening. If we don't have the car seat in the

house by 1st December then I'm buying one myself. DH agrees. But I don't

love what I suspect she's trying to do.

This situation is less about the car seat itself and more about the feeling behind it.

A baby’s arrival is already a huge transition, and many parents become especially sensitive to anything that feels like someone else trying to create a role for themselves before they have even been invited into it.

From OP’s perspective, the concern is not “MIL bought something nice and I’m ungrateful.”

In fact, OP clearly recognizes the generosity behind buying one of the most expensive registry items.

The discomfort comes from the timing and the pattern.

MIL made a comment about bringing three dogs to the hospital, which, even if intended as humor, crossed into a scenario where OP’s boundaries were not being respected.

Then the one item that would be practically necessary for bringing the baby home remained in MIL’s possession despite the nursery being ready.

The emotional question becomes: Is this a helpful gesture, or is this creating a situation where MIL feels needed?

Sometimes family members struggle with the shift that happens when their adult child becomes a parent.

They may not consciously think, “I want control,” but they can act from a desire to remain important.

Buying a major baby item can feel like a beautiful way to contribute, but holding onto it can unintentionally create a sense of leverage: “I have something you need.”

For a new parent, especially one preparing for birth, that can feel unsettling.

At the same time, there is another possible interpretation.

MIL may simply be someone who bought a meaningful gift, stored it safely, and has not realized the parents now want it back. Not every awkward action comes from manipulation.

The difficulty is that trust is usually built through patterns, and OP’s previous experiences with MIL are influencing how this situation feels.

In OP’s case, the healthiest approach is not necessarily proving whether MIL has a hidden motive.

The important part is removing the possibility of the car seat becoming a source of stress.

Buying another one if it is not returned by the agreed date is reasonable, not as punishment, but as preparation.

Parents should never feel dependent on someone else’s cooperation for a newborn’s basic needs.

The bigger lesson is that boundaries around birth are not invitations for negotiation.

A hospital visit, a first meeting, or involvement with a newborn should happen because the parents are comfortable, not because someone has contributed financially or purchased an item.

MIL’s gift can be appreciated while still making it clear that access to the baby is not something that can be earned through gifts.

Support is wonderful. Pressure is not.

And in the early days of parenthood, peace and stability matter far more than avoiding someone else’s disappointment.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These commenters suggested buying a separate car seat if MIL creates unnecessary stress or conditions

drulaps − I would just buy my own and never mention it again

Lystrade − "Hey MIL, we're going to stop by tomorrow for a quick visit.

While we're there we'll grab anything that you've bought so we can start

organizing LO's nursery. I don't want to wait until I'm too uncomfortable to

do it. " Then you make sure to get the car seat.

If she questions it you can tell her that you both want to practice installing

it because these new seats are just something else. If she finds some

reason to prevent you from taking it, you may just have to suck it up and

buy yourself one. If that happens you make sure "her" seat never gets used.

It isn't a gift if there are strings attached. As for the dogs, I have never

heard of a hospital allowing pets to visit patients, but you tell the nurses in

no uncertain terms that the "threat" has been made and that she isn't welcome at all.

If she brings it up again you make certain to shoot the idea down so hard

her head spins. Make sure SO's on board too. He's already defended her once.

TNTmom4 − I think right now you’re building shadow dragons. Something

to battle since your mom has backed off. Your nervous system doesn’t

know what to do with this self. . Just let your MIL know that you have space

now for it. Maybe even have your husband go pick it up. She just might be

waiting until the baby shower to give it to you. .

This group recommended having the car seat professionally checked and installed before the baby arrives

nico1226 − We got our car seat checked out by our local fire department

after we put it in to make sure we did it right. Installing it at the hospital would be stressful and last minute

fsmom − Schedule an appointment with whichever agency does CPST car

seat checks in your area, then tell her your husband will come pick it up

before the appointment so you can make sure it is properly installed before the birth.

mama2babas − The police in my area so carseat safety checks. K__l two

birds with one stone and see if you can find somewhere to ensure it's

installed correctly and then tell MIL "We have an appointment to get the

carseat installment safety checked with the local PD/FIRE this weekend.

When can you bring it or when can we come pick it up?

"  Then, if she pushes back in any way, buy your own and let her know she can return the one she bought.

Lanfeare − Ok, this one is on your husband. He’s not managing it well. That

is his mom. He should say «  mom, when can I pass by to take the car seat?

We need to check it and make sure it fits in our car well. Monday will be

fine?  » And it is actually true. You should test the car seat before the due date.

Not every car seat fits well in every car, some car seats may have some

issues, you need to unpack it and put it into your car before the hospital

stay. Definitely not on the day you are leaving the hospital!

These users advised DH to directly ask MIL for the car seat and test her intentions

PerspectiveEven9928 − Easily solved and found out.  Dh calls “hey mom we

are so appreciative you got the car seat.  Can I come pick it up sometime

next week? We are going to have it professionally installed for safety and

plan to do that sooner or later “.   If she says okay you’re in the clear.

If she stalls and mentions bringing it hospital you know She’s up to

something and can shut it Down early

KillreaJones − Just ask her directly to bring it next time she is coming to

visit. You mention that she "knows" that you have space now, but all that

does is create unsaid expectations that MIL isn't meeting. If she refuses or

forgets, DH can go collect it from her.

_Internet_Hugs_ − Ask for the carseat in November, tell her the hospital

will install it for you and you want to get it in before any holiday business.

Tell her it's your way of feeling totally prepared and blame nesting hormones.

(The hospital may actually have a service like this, ours actually wouldn't

allow us to leave the hospital with the baby without a car seat inspection

and it was free to have them install it properly. ) This will force her hand

and you will know for sure if she's holding it hostage.

If she refuses then you can go ahead and buy your own, if she hands it over

you can later tell her that you couldn't get an install appointment until December.

biancastolemyname − Why can’t your husband visit his mom, and at the end

of the visit go “oh and I will take the car seat now! We’d like to have it

installed in time and we plan on having it checked out for safety so best I take it now, where is it? ”

Courin − Have you considered having your SO go over and tell her he needs

the car seat so he can do a test run installation? Would be hard for her to come up with an excuse to hold onto it in that case….

MIL’s missing car seat might seem like a small issue, but for OP it represents a much bigger question: who gets to decide the boundaries around a first baby’s arrival.

While some may think she’s reading too much into an unfinished favor, others understand why past comments made her cautious.

A gift should never become a ticket to access. Do you think OP is right to prepare a backup plan, or is she assuming the worst too soon?
