MIL Criticizes Her Parenting for Months, Then Demands Babysitting Rights Over Her Grandchild

in Social Issues

Becoming a new parent is already a life-changing experience, but it can become overwhelming when the people around you make you feel like you are constantly failing.

A home that should feel safe can quickly become a place where someone feels watched, judged, and unheard.

The original poster (OP) is a new mother who has been struggling with postpartum depression, family pressure, and a partner who refuses to stand up for her.

Living close to her in-laws was supposed to create a supportive environment, but instead, OP feels trapped by constant criticism and control.

Now she is questioning whether it is time to leave and seek help. Read on to find out what pushed OP to her breaking point.

New mom struggles after childbirth as her in-laws begin questioning her parenting choices

'My MIL wants to take over my life?'

Hi everyone,

I’m a new mom to a 8-month-old baby boy. I live with my partner in a small

house just a few yards away from his parents’ home. His sister, her

husband, and their child live in another house on the same property.

On paper, it looks like one big, close family. In reality, it’s overcrowded,

invasive, and exhausting — I never get a moment of peace.

My pregnancy was rough — emotionally and physically. I had an emergency

C-section, my hormones crashed, and I went through postpartum

depression. Instead of understanding, my MIL kept saying I needed

psychiatric help so I could “finally become part of the family.”. She

constantly reminded me that she had four kids and worked in a kindergarten, so “she knows better.”

When my baby was just a few weeks old, she and FIL barged into our home,

telling me I wasn’t doing anything right — that the baby was pale, that I

didn’t cook or clean enough, that I “wasn’t fit to be a mother.”

FIL asked me “why I even got pregnant” and said my postpartum

depression was “b__lshit — I’m just mean and selfish.”. When that

happened, my partner sat there quietly and didn’t defend me.

After they left, instead of comforting me, he said I’ve “lost myself” and that

I “ruined him and his family.”. Now, my MIL rarely speaks to me directly —

but she constantly pressures my partner behind my back.

She calls him after work, complains that she “never sees her grandson,”

tells him I “don’t go outside with the baby,” and keeps suggesting that she

should take care of him instead of us sending him to daycare.. My partner

then brings all that pressure home and repeats her words to me, like a

messenger.. I feel like I’m fighting his entire family, not just him.. The latest

argument is about daycare.. I want our son to go to daycare when my

maternity leave ends.. It would be good for him to socialize, and it would

give me space to start working again.

My partner says daycare is “too expensive” — even though he makes good

money and spends hundreds of dollars on his car, tires, and repairs.

He insists that his mother can babysit “for free,” which to me is unthinkable

after everything she’s done and said.

When I told him I don’t want her taking care of our child, he accused me of

“doing it out of spite” because I “hate his family.” And he said he is done

with me and his parents when he is angry and one day he will snap and k__l

us all.. Everyone around my MIL says “that’s just how she is.”. My partner

says the same — that she “means well” and that I should stop taking

everything so personally.. But that excuse doesn’t make it any easier.

It just means she can keep saying and doing whatever she wants, while I’m

expected to stay quiet and “get over it.”. Meanwhile, I have my own house

two hours away — small, old, but mine.

He and his parents mock it, saying it’s “dirty, unfit for a baby,” and that I

couldn’t possibly live there alone.. My MIL even bragged that she “asked

around” about the house to see what it looks like.. But at least there, I

could breathe.. Here, I feel trapped, watched, and judged every single day.

They accuse me of being lazy, even though my partner does most of the

cleaning because, as he says, “only he knows how it should be done.”

He tells me I’m ungrateful because he cooks and cleans, but when I try to

help, he criticizes how I do it.. Now, I barely try anymore — whatever I do,

it’s never enough.. Emotionally, we’re done.. We live like roommates, no

affection, no trust, no connection.. He says I’m “selfish” and that I’ve

“destroyed his family.”. But all I ever wanted was peace and space to raise

my child without being controlled or insulted.. On Monday I’m calling the

domestic violence helpline and social services.

I just can’t live like this anymore — surrounded by manipulation, guilt, and

people who think they own my life.

Becoming a parent is supposed to be a time when someone feels protected, supported, and surrounded by care.

Instead, some new mothers find themselves having to defend their choices, their emotions, and even their right to feel safe in their own home.

That kind of pressure can turn an already difficult transition into an overwhelming experience.

In this situation, OP is not simply dealing with disagreements about childcare or household responsibilities.

The deeper issue is that she feels constantly undermined during one of the most vulnerable periods of her life.

After an emergency C-section and postpartum depression, she needed compassion and stability.

Instead, she describes being criticized, questioned as a mother, and made to feel like an outsider in the very family environment that was supposed to support her.

The conflict around daycare represents something much bigger than the cost of childcare.

OP is not only choosing between daycare and a grandmother providing free care.

She is choosing who she trusts to have influence over her child after experiencing repeated criticism and disrespect.

When someone has previously told a new mother that she is “not fit” to parent, it is understandable that handing that person daily access to the baby feels unsafe emotionally.

There is also a painful relationship dynamic happening between OP and her partner.

Rather than acting as a united team, he appears to be carrying his family’s opinions into the relationship and expecting OP to absorb them.

This can leave someone feeling outnumbered, as if they are in a relationship with an entire family system instead of one partner.

This perspective is important because OP’s distress does not seem to come from one disagreement.

It comes from a pattern where her feelings are repeatedly dismissed. Being told someone “means well” does not erase the impact of harmful behavior.

Good intentions do not automatically make criticism, insults, or threats acceptable.

The most concerning part of this story is the statement about wanting to “kill” everyone during an argument.

Even if said in anger, statements involving violence should not be minimized.

OP’s decision to contact domestic violence resources and social services shows that she is taking her safety and her child’s safety seriously.

Seeking support does not mean she has already decided the outcome of her relationship; it means she is creating options.

A healthy family environment is not one where everyone agrees all the time.

It is one where people can disagree without fear, humiliation, or control.

A mother should not have to earn the right to make decisions for her own child or prove that she deserves respect.

Sometimes the first step toward healing is not convincing others to finally understand.

Sometimes it is recognizing that your own peace, safety, and dignity matter too.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These commenters urged OP to treat the threats seriously and seek immediate safety support

Electrical_Day8206 − Call the hotline NOW.

twitchazel_18 − Im very concerned about your partner's threat of snapping

and k__ling you all. I think you should seriously look into a way out in case

things start to escalate. Please be safe.

chasemc123 − Thank goodness you're getting out! PLEASE be careful! His

comments about k__ling you are very worrying.   Get away safely, this is a very dangerous time for you.

DazzlingPotion − “And he said he is done with me and his parents when he

is angry and one day he will snap and k__l us all. ” Pack up your baby and go

to your house two hours away! Put security cameras up immediately.

Hire an attorney and Get a restraining order so your husband and MIL can’t come near you or LO.

This group recommended documenting abuse, securing the home, and creating a careful exit plan

Baudica − Find an app that records, like a security camera, with sound. Then

find out about the local laws on recording someone without their consent.

Do contact that DC support line, and do NOT downplay anything, when you

explain what is going on. Best case scenario, you can just walk out, and move back to your own place.

If you have any evidence of your husband going on one of his angry 'I will

snap and k__l everyone' rants, you have a bigger chance of not having to

drop your son off with them half the time. As soon as you can, get therapy,

official therapy. Or a psychologist, preferably.

And have it on record how the environment you were living in worsened

your PPD, etc. Talk to a lawyer, if you can. Actually, just make sure you can.

The DV line should be able to refer you to a local lawyer that specializes in situations like yours.

WakaWakaBabe − I'm so sorry, OP. That's so hard. You know what you need

to do for yourself and your child. Get out of there. Does your husband

know where your house is? If he does, it may not be safe staying there.

Especially if it's isolated. If you have friends or family nearby, or nearby-ish, I'd suggest staying with them for a little while.

While with them, sell your home, use that money to buy a place that he

doesn't know about, that's safe. And go from there. Like others have said,

document things. Take screenshots of his abuse. Record audio of his abuse.

It'll be extremely important later when arguing custody. You're making the right choice. I'm wishing you tons of luck, OP.

Potential-Ad5018 − You have an exit strategy, take it. But move in the

shadows, get an attorney, hire a cleaning service to prep the house for you

and your child. If you have friends you can trust, have them set up the

nursery and change the locks, install cameras, etc. , if not, get a home security system installed.

Have the items you need sent directly to the house, and when hubby is at work, leave.

FrostiePi − He threatened to k__l you and his folks if he gets more stressed,

while they keep piling on stress and he refuses to let anyone help. Plus. You

know. He sounds like a p__ck. He will snap. Get out now. You have a house.

Get security cameras on the way to the house, tell the police in the area

that you are coming from a DV situation and he may follow you and protect

yourself and your son. This woman wants to raise your son and she WILL work to cut you off from him.

Don't let her, your ex, or anyone else take him from you for even a day. And

make sure ANY daycare knows not to let them pick him up with pictures.

These Redditors advised OP to leave the unsafe environment and return to her own home with her child

Thallasophie − Pack a bag of essentials and keep it hidden. If you know

there will be a time when no one is home, take the bag and your little one

and go to your house. Then, contact a solicitor. This is not a safe or healthy environment for you or the baby.

RainbowUnicornBaby45 − For your safety OP please leave and go back to

your house. This man threatened to k__l you. Do not take that lightly. When

a person shows you who they are believe them. Don’t tell anyone, just

leave and never allow his family in your house.

Lokipupper456 − Take the baby and go back to your home before he can

take any action to stop you. I’m honestly not clear on how you think calling

social services will help. It could potentially create a situation where you

aren’t allowed to leave with your kid. It doesn’t sound like they or he are

doing anything dangerous to your child or even you.

And they could use your postpartum depression against you. Social services

is not the same type of service you get from a domestic abuse hotline. Women’s shelters can help you leave.

Once you get out and back home, you can arrange an option for him to

come visit his child at home with you present and without either of his

parents being allowed to come along or enter your home. Talk to a lawyer.

And maybe call local police in your husband’s area after you leave and are

on the way home to assure them that you are not missing, that you are

simply taking your child to your own home, and your child is safe, and

explain that your SO and his parents are likely trying to use the police to

stop you from leaving, but you have every right up go to your own home with your own child.

Also explain to police that the in-laws and your soon to be ex are trying to

paint you as mentally unstable because you had a hard labor and

postpartum depression, which you manage with your medical providers. Good luck, but get out. Don’t call in social services.

You will only trap yourself, and you actually don’t need his permission to

take your child anywhere until a court says so. Which is why you actually

don’t want social services involved! Edit: and based on your comment history, it sounds like you are in Slovenia.

So you should contact the domestic violence resources in your country and

check their advice on things like calling social services or leaving with your

child. It may be different there. But I still think they are the ones to start with!

OP’s situation goes far beyond a disagreement about childcare or family closeness.

After a difficult pregnancy and postpartum period, she needed support, but instead faced criticism, isolation, and a partner who repeatedly dismissed her concerns.

The most alarming part is the threat of harm during an argument that should never be brushed aside as “just anger.”

Seeking outside support and making a safety plan is a serious but understandable step.

Do you think OP’s partner failed by prioritizing his family over his wife and child?

How would you respond if your home no longer felt like a safe place? Share your thoughts below!
