Married Man’s 18-Year-Old Coworker Calls Herself His “Work Wife,” but He Wants the Flirting to Stop

Being friendly at work is normal, but there is a point where certain gestures can start feeling too personal. That line becomes especially important when someone is married and has no interest in turning harmless workplace banter into something more complicated.

A Redditor described feeling increasingly uneasy around a much younger coworker who regularly flirted with him despite hearing him talk about his wife.

According to the OP, she left hearts on his things, offered to make him food, signed notes as his “work wife,” and even made a pointed comment about being a good stepmother during a conversation about children.

He did not want to embarrass her or trigger retaliation, so he kept hoping his references to his marriage would send the message. They did not seem to. Keep reading to see why he finally considered involving his boss and how the problem unexpectedly resolved itself.

'Younger coworker won't take the hint'

I Am married. For whatever reason this younger coworker (18) will not take the hint. We will call her K.

She is a very attractive woman, kinda ditsey, friendly.

However, im in love with my wife we have been through everything together and i would not give it up for anything.

K draws hearts on things that are mine, she stares at me intil I noticed and she blushes and looks away.

Always tries to talk to me. Asking if I need anything coffee , food ( that she will make for me).

Another coworker was joking around about K being my work wife.

K over heard this and now gives me things signed (ww) "work wife".

I was talking about kids with another coworker(who's going through a divorce) and K looks at me

and says " I don't have much experience with kids but I've always felt like I would be a great mom or step-mom".

I've told K any chance I get that I love my wife and that she's the world to me.

I don't want too make a big deal out of this becuase she could get mad and retaliate somhow.

Why can't she just take a hint.

EDIT:WOW I DIDNT THINK THIS WOULD BLOW UP LIKE THIS.

FIRSTLY : Thank you everyone for your good advice, you know who you are.

SECOND: I will not be commenting on posts anymore becuase the situation is over.

OKAY HERE IS THE UPDATE: SO , first day back after posting I went to my boss to discuss everything and found out that he had fired K that morning.

Turns out she had been stealing for a while but he didn't want to drop her right before Christmas so he did it the day after.

So yea that's it. Sorry if that's anticlimactic but it is what it is.

Feeling appreciated or admired can be flattering, but it can also become uncomfortable when someone repeatedly ignores signals that a boundary exists.

The difficulty is that attraction, friendliness, and harmless workplace interactions can sometimes look similar from the outside. The important question is not whether someone has a crush. It is whether their behavior respects another person’s comfort and commitments.

In this situation, the OP was not struggling because he disliked being friendly with a coworker. He was concerned because the interactions appeared to move beyond ordinary workplace kindness.

The repeated personal gestures, “work wife” jokes, suggestive comments about family roles, and attempts to create a special connection made him feel like his marriage was not being respected.

His hesitation also shows another layer: he was worried that directly addressing the issue could create workplace consequences.

A different perspective is that K may not have fully understood how her behavior was being perceived. Some people are naturally affectionate, playful, or unaware of how their actions affect others. She may have viewed the hearts, gifts, and jokes as harmless flirting rather than a serious attempt to cross a line.

However, intent does not completely determine impact. When someone repeatedly communicates romantic interest after learning a person is committed, it becomes reasonable to establish clearer boundaries.

Workplace psychologists often emphasize that unclear social situations can become difficult because people rely heavily on assumptions instead of direct communication.

The Society for Human Resource Management explains that workplace relationships require professionalism and that employees and managers should be aware of behaviors that could create discomfort or inappropriate dynamics.

This perspective highlights why the OP’s repeated comments about loving his wife may not have been enough. Hinting often fails because people interpret signals differently.

A person who wants to believe there is a possibility may explain away reminders about a spouse as simple conversation rather than a boundary.

A healthier approach would have been a calm, direct statement focused on professionalism rather than accusation: “I want to keep our relationship strictly professional, and some of the personal jokes and gifts are making me uncomfortable.”

This avoids attacking her character while making the expectation clear. It also creates a record that the boundary was communicated if the behavior continues.

The larger lesson is that respecting a relationship is not only about avoiding physical betrayal. It is also about protecting the emotional boundaries around that relationship.

A strong marriage does not require someone to avoid every friendly interaction. It requires recognizing when an interaction begins creating a sense of exclusivity, discomfort, or confusion.

In the end, the OP’s instincts were focused on preserving something important to him: trust with his wife. The best workplace relationships are built on respect, not attention that leaves another person wondering where the line is.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These users suspected OP was attracted to her or hiding part of the story

ihniwya − He definitely did something with her, and now regrets it. Poster isn’t telling us the whole story. Did his wife make him write this?

Low_Apple_1558 − I like how you threw in the “she is very attractive “, it’s coming never s__t where you eat brother

[Reddit User] − What hint? You didn’t mention a single hit you’ve tried to give her

These commenters called the coworker’s behavior sexual harassment that needed stopping

[Reddit User] − B__lshit story but yeah ok

Ship_Mental − This is shmexual gharassment. Report.

These Redditors advised handling it directly rather than immediately involving HR

RedFoxCommunist − So many snitches here. She is 18 and it's a minor annoyance, unless she sends you nudes.

Just don't lead her on. Tell your wife if you want, but don't go tattling to HR

Connect-Ad5547 − Word of advice, dont go the hr route like all the women on here are saying. Trust me, it only ends well for women.

Once shes at hr and they tell her that she needs to stop and blah blah blah,

theres a chance she will go crazy since women in love are MUCH scarier than men in love and

as a result will make up a lie about you that could damage your career, get you fired just for being accused, or worse.

You said this girl is pretty. The pretty ones are the most terrifying.

Seriously do yourself a favor and just suck it up, tell your wife everything and make sure shes on board and understands

what's going on so no misunderstandings happen with your marriage,

and ignore her flirts by bringing up your wife or changing the subject to your wife every single time.

This group crudely encouraged OP to sleep with the coworker despite being married

dumsomebit − Smash and juggle both ef em until it blows up in your face.

cpjordy − I'd say take her out one night. Show her the time of her life, fill her up like a twinkie.

Then at the end of the night give her some plan b and tell her how much you love your wife

and that this was meant as a treat for her but it can never happen or be spoken about again.

She will appreciate the experience and the honesty

[Reddit User] − As a married woman my opinion is as follows: shut that s__t down fast.

I would be pissed and probably knock a b__ch out that was referring to her self as my husbands "work wife".

What she is doing is unprofessional and s__ual harassment. Be a man and speak up and tell her to stop.

You having to have an awkward conversation with K is worth not hurting your wife.

Protect your wife's heart always, that's the whole point of being a husband.

lyinggrump − F__k her, bro. Wife won't find out.

Ghost-Of-0nyx − Just bang her out. Like, who cares ? She's 18 lol

kierzo181 − Give her the worst s__ ever and leave it at that.

Old-Wonder-8133 − Bang her then erase her memory.

[Reddit User] − Ngl I’m hitting that, one gotta release stress somehow🤷‍♂️

Should he have directly shut down the “work wife” nickname earlier, or was repeatedly talking about his marriage enough? And would you tell a spouse immediately if a coworker behaved this way?
