MIL Defends Daughter’s Jealous Behavior, But New Parents Refuse To Keep Taking The Abuse

by Leona Pham
August 17, 2026
in Social Issues

Sometimes the biggest family conflicts are not caused by one single event, but by years of ignored behavior and broken boundaries.

When someone keeps hurting you without taking responsibility, even small moments can bring years of frustration back to the surface.

The original poster (OP) has spent years dealing with tension from her partner’s sister, who has repeatedly criticized her, questioned her choices, and treated her children differently.

With a newborn baby and another family gathering approaching, OP is faced with a difficult decision: attend and keep the peace, or protect her family’s peace by staying away. Read on to find out what OP decided.

A mother must choose between protecting her newborn’s peace and confronting a jealous sister-in-law

'WIBTA if I wore my engagement ring to Christmas dinner just to spite my SIL?'

Hello fellow potatoes, if any of you have read other posts from me then

you may know a bit about my SIL (who I'll call Kelly in this post), so please excuse any repetitions.

This year, my MIL is inviting his entire side of the family to a dinner on

Christmas day. It should be around 20 people without our family of 5

joining. Let me start by saying I do NOT want to attend. Leo (my partner)

and I are on shaky ground with a couple relatives due to past boundaries

being crossed, plus we have a newborn (3MOM\*) who is fragile due to

being born premature, so we were going to sit this one out. An option his

mother avidly denies as a possibility.. 3MOM\* - 3 month old male

Another big issue (as you can probably guess form the title) is his sister,

who will definitely be in attendance. She has a growing list of offenses,

that his mother continually makes excuses for or completely overlooks.

Some of those bigger offences (in chronological order) are:

1. Giving me the cold shoulder/silent treatment at every family event ever

since Leo and I started dating. No one knows why this started and she refuses to give any reason.

2. Organizing an intervention when I got pregnant with my and Leo's first

child. She insisted I had either lied about my very real fertility issues in

some ploy to trap my partner into a relationship OR that I had cheated on

him and was making him my fall back. For the record, she never apologized

or explained why she did this and when I brought it up to his mom she

insisted that 'it's just so common nowadays' or 'she was just looking out for

her brother'. It was around then I discovered that his mother was the co-

host to her intervention, but my MIL is a whole other cup of tea.

3. Loudly declaring at a family gathering that my first son, who is non-

verbal, is autistic and that Leo and I weren't seeing to his needs. For

reference, he has been tested multiple times and does not meet criteria for

autisim, but we would be fully supportive if he ever is diagnosed. The

accusation didn't bother me, I explained calmly that we are working with

multiple doctors and going to speech therapy to support his speech delay, but she just scoffed and said that wasn't enough.

4. After finally witnessing it himself, Leo stood up to her about how she

treats me and our children without cause or provocation. She played the

victim, insulted me and insisting that I was misinterpreting her and that

shes just warming up to me in her own way. We've been together 8 years.

He told her we would go low contact with her until she apologized for her

behaviour and agreed to treat us and our children with more respect and love.

Last weekend, at dinner with my MIL, Kelly was on the phone as we walked

in. Leo's mother insisted he tall to her 'just to say hi' and 'start the healing'.

She took that chance with him on the phone to only talk about herself -

specifically about how big her engagement ring that her and her partner were crafting together. It made Leo see red.

A bit more context may be needed here. Kelly has a tattoo that she got as a

young women, a sun with 5 points, because she apparently was always

talking about how she wanted to mother 5 children one day. When Leo and

I had children first, her demeanor became even icier than when we were

dating. She even said to him once that she doesn't care about our children

as much as her friend's kids. That comment hurt Leo greatly.

Leo and I aren't married, we wanted to wait until after we bought a home

together. We aren't even engaged - technically. He has the ring, and

heirloom ring my father gifted to us for when we're ready to take our first

step. I've never been allowed to see it, but Leo told me it's a stunning 24K

gold band with vines of diamonds and a decently sized middle gem. I

accepted his 'joke' proposal with a ring pop after the first 4 years. He

knows I hate expensive and extravagant things, but my family ring is the one exception.

So, here's where I may be the AH. Leo made the comment that he could

just propose officially on my birthday (before Christmas) and have me wear

the ring to the dinner to surprise everyone. I feel like he meant it as a joke

at the time... but he seems to really want to go through with it. I admit,

being 'happy petty' instead of my usual people pleasing self has got me feeling both guilty and a bit thrilled.

Thing is, his mother has seen the ring already and knows an official

proposal isn't far away so Leo feels it wouldn't be much of a shock to

anyone. Aside from Kelly. It would be a big shock to Kelly. He feels she's

trying to one up him as she often does and that she feels threatened and jealous that we've just had our third child.

Help me dearest potatoes. Should I attend the dinner with or without the

ring? Or should I stay home and protect what little peace I'm afforded?

Small Edit: I've seen some people talking about how I could be worried

about my little baby one moment and wanting to be petty the next. So you

all know, IF I go it not would NOT mean the baby would go. It would be a

k__l em' with kindness hello and goodbye - less than 30 minutes so I can

drop the gifts off (and potentially show off the ring), but I would

definitelynot stay for the dinner. In the meantime the baby would be home

safe with my sister. Please all know that his health comes first in my mind always.

Slightly larger edit: Wow, a lot of back and forth about us not being

married and having 3 children. I'm not naive enough to think this

explanation will change any opinions, but who knows. Our children were all

happy surprises after months of treatments, due to my fertility issues

mentioned above, the doctors said I'm lucky to have any. I may be an

athiest, but I'm also Pro-life (personal choice, sorry if others disagree) and

would never have aborted a miracle baby simply to 'wait till marriage'. Our

home situation is not ideal, we live separately while I maintain full custody

of all 3 kids. I know some people won't understand this, but where we live

it's either homeless and married or living separately and not married. We

want to buy a home together to give our kids, and ourselves, more stability

before funding what is basically (to us, since we are non-religious) a big

family party. I'm sorry if this ruffles some feathers out in the world of

Reddit, but at least understand that this - while maybe not the best for our

relationship. IS what's best for our children at this time. If we win the lottery I'll let y'all know 😆

UPDATE

Today we are riding the high road with a spot of tea. We kept the peace and stayed home.

We (Leo and I) had a sit down after reading through your comments. Some

of them made us laugh and he wants me to comment on a couple things

quick before we get into the meat and potatoes as to how we ended up dealing with our situation.

1. I have a literature degree, which we figure is the reason a lot of people seem to think that my writing is A.I. - very flattered.

2. Aside from here, Leo and I don't have any socials. Personal reasons. That

is why we were unable to take the 'post about it from home and let them freak' suggestions.

3. Yes, rings can in fact be made with 24K gold, which I need (if we want to

go the gold route) due to a nickel allergy. They are much softer and more delicate.

4. I tried to explain it the best way I could, but again we are NOT getting

married before buying a home. It may sound dumb to some (maybe even

most) of you, but if you read the edit in my last post I do explain exactly

why. In the end, this is our choice and yes, we've already spoken to lawyers to ensure this would be good for us.

5. Saw some people doubting my fertility issues, which is just hurtful. Yes,

we are blessed with 3 children - but there have been losses. We are VERY fortunate and I'm grateful every day.

6. I agree with all of you that our 'real' engagement (not Ring Pop version)

should be spontaneous and heartfelt, not rushed due to sibling rivalry. Leo

agrees as well and has already started floating ideas for our special moment.

Now, sorry that took so long, onto the update.

First, THE TEA. Apparently, Kelly has been insisting that she wants... a

BABY. I guess she's been talking with MIL about it ever since we had our

3rd. She is making her future husband marry her as soon as possible (this

year) with only that goal in mind. His family is very traditional and it would

look 'very bad' if they had a baby first. Which makes me wonder how his

family meeting us will go, but that's a circus under another tent.

After learning this, and reading some of your comments, Leo and I decided

that we would hold off on our engagement altogether so that she can have

'all eyes on her' just like she wants. We will not be attending the wedding

as we have learned that it will most likely be child-free. A note, we are the only family of hers with kids.

Part of our choice was informing MIL that we will not be attending

Christmas dinner if Kelly is there. As expected, the manipulation

techniques began pretty much instantly. She tried making other family

push us to come, tried begging herself and of course pulled the 'if you

don't come then she wins' card. Leo faltered a few times, saying that

maybe he would just drop in alone for awhile, but I stood my ground.

Now to the big day, Christmas. We woke up, watched the kids tear open

their gifts and stockings in our PJs and then I taught my daughter to make

our family recipe French Toast. We made breakfast and spent the rest of

the day enjoying the festive cheer. Around dinner time we got quite a few

'are you really not coming?' messages, but we turned our phones off and ate our own dinner.

The ring is tucked away for now, no new petty plans are brewing. The baby

LOVED his first Christmas. The lights and the sounds. It was peaceful and

magical and perfect. We are thinking of maybe doing it every year. Thank

you to everyone who read or commented. I think your words really helped

Leo to understand how toxic the situation was for all of us.

Family celebrations can be complicated when they stop being about connection and start becoming about proving something.

Many people struggle with the pressure to show up, keep the peace, or avoid disappointing relatives, even when those choices come at the expense of their own emotional safety.

In this situation, OP was not simply deciding whether to attend a Christmas dinner.

She was weighing a fragile newborn’s health, years of unresolved family conflict, and the emotional exhaustion of repeatedly being expected to tolerate disrespect.

The proposal idea became tempting because it represented something deeper: after years of feeling ignored and targeted, OP and Leo wanted one moment where their happiness was visible.

It was less about the ring itself and more about finally feeling like they were not allowing someone else’s negativity to control their lives.

However, there is another perspective worth considering.

When families have a history of competition, dramatic reactions, or attempts to “win,” even a positive milestone can accidentally become part of that same cycle.

While OP’s desire to celebrate her relationship is understandable, making a major life moment partly about Kelly’s reaction risks giving Kelly influence over something that should belong only to OP and Leo.

The strongest boundary is often not a louder statement, it is refusing to participate in the competition at all.

That insight fits this situation closely. OP and Leo appear to have spent years trying to manage Kelly’s emotions and prevent conflict.

The Christmas dinner became another example of that pattern: even a proposal, which should be an intimate and meaningful moment, was being considered through the lens of how someone else might react.

Choosing to stay home was not necessarily a rejection of family. It was a decision to prioritize peace during a vulnerable season of life.

A premature baby, three young children, and a relationship already under pressure are more important than maintaining appearances at one gathering.

The healthier long-term approach is not about making Kelly understand, approve, or finally acknowledge OP’s worth.

Some people never provide the validation others hope for.

The more powerful shift happens when OP and Leo build their own traditions, celebrate their milestones privately, and allow their family life to exist without constantly responding to someone else’s behavior.

Sometimes the biggest victory is not proving that someone else was wrong.

It is reaching a point where their reaction no longer determines your choices.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These commenters encouraged OP to reveal the engagement publicly and enjoy the reaction

Necessary-Stay8712 − Or. .. dont go but post all over socials/family chat a

pic if the ring on Christmas eve so that the whole family will be talking about it on Christmas day

i_GoTtA_gOoD_bRaIn − Go! Do it! !! She probably only got engaged to

'beat' her brother. Maybe she will let that poor sucker (her fiancé) off the

hook. I bet she is going to have some wedding date shenanigans. Maybe

she will schedule her wedding a month before yours so less people show up at yours. She sounds insane.

DifficultOwl9000 − Please do it and report back ……… we want to hear

EVERYTHING. Oh and congrats in advance. 💜

HorkupCat − Go! With ring on! Laugh (inside if you must keep a polite exterior) at SIL's blazing jealousy!

This group prioritized the baby’s health and advised avoiding drama or risky gatherings

EponymousRocks − Your very real concerns about your baby’s health have

just evaporated then? This revenge proposal takes you right down to her

level. Please don’t do that. Stay home, protect your family and your peace, and stop fantasizing about one-upping her.

wishingforarainyday − No. Your job is to protect your at risk baby. Don’t be

petty to satisfy your need to bother her.

ACynicalOptomist − With a three month old, I would not go.

Chehairazode − Post the ring, but stay home with the baby. His safety is

more important than your petty. ... Congratulations🎉🥂

This group questioned the decision to delay marriage while sharing major commitments like children or buying a home

TootsNYC − Leo and I aren't married, we wanted to wait until after we

bought a home together. People, DO NOT BUY A HOME WITH SOMEONE YOU ARE NOT MARRIED TO.

Oranges007 − Not on subject but girl. ..go get married already! Three kids

and your waiting for a house? ! Seriously? ! What's that gonna do for you?

Only_Music_2640 − So boyfriend wants to use a ring he didn’t choose or

pay for to one up his obnoxious sister on Christmas and you don’t see a problem with that? Hmmmm

After years of dealing with hurtful comments and family tension, OP and Leo faced a choice between proving a point and protecting their peace.

Instead of turning the Christmas dinner into another battle, they chose a quiet holiday focused on their children and their own happiness.

Some may think they gave Kelly too much power by stepping away, while others see it as a healthy boundary.
