Future Grandma Demands A Role In The Birth Plan, So The Couple Gives Her None

The arrival of a baby is supposed to be a moment focused on the parents and their comfort, but family expectations can sometimes make an already emotional time even more stressful. S

etting boundaries before birth is not always easy, especially when relatives believe their excitement gives them a special role.

The original poster (OP) is preparing for the arrival of her first baby and has already created a clear birth plan.

While her own mother will be visiting for support, OP’s mother-in-law has been pushing for a bigger role despite being told she will not be involved until after the birth.

Read on to find out why OP and her husband decided to keep their original plan.

Pregnant woman sets birth boundaries after her MIL insists she should be involved despite being overwhelming

not the actual photo

'MIL wants to come to the delivery room to "keep us calm" 🤣?'

For context, I'm very pregnant, my mom is flying in for the birth, but is also

not invited to the delivery room. My husband calls his mom yesterday, and she is very excited.

If anyone has read my past posts, she tends to desperately want to "help,"

but it comes from such an egocentric place that it is almost never helpful.

She also tends to think she is owed something for what she does for you,

which is a game my husband and I don't play. She was described to me as

an anxious person when I first met her, and that has not changed at all. I

find her deeply selfish and exhausting on my best days.

Back to the story, with the birth on the horizon, she's now starting to get a

little desperate with the role she's been assigned in our birth plan, which is

"none, see you two weeks after the birth." She also lives a 4 hour drive

away, and they stay with us when they visit, so there's no such thing as a

quick drop in. She starts in on DH about, "don't worry I'll drop anything and

come there, just say the word!" And, "you're going to want someone there

to support you and keep you two calm." Which is the right idea, but the wrong person.

Why, if my own mother is there, she thinks she could do a better job, I don't

know. But also, truly, this lady stresses my husband and I out more than

anyone I've ever met! When my mom met her, she said, "she makes me feel

like my insides are vibrating." Same mom. Same. There's a reason my

husband has spent years in therapy trying to get a handle on his

disassociation and it's entirely his incredibly anxious, overbearing parents.

So, husband says, "no, thank you, we don't need you in the delivery room.

We'll see you two weeks after the birth when we are settled." And we

laughed and we laughed at the idea that she would ever, ever be able to

give us emotional support.

A lot of people imagine childbirth support as something every family member naturally has the right to provide, but the reality is very different.

During one of the most physically and emotionally vulnerable moments of a person’s life, the most helpful person is not always the person who loves them the most.

It is usually the person who makes them feel the safest, calmest, and most respected.

In this situation, OP was not rejecting MIL because she does not care about her or because she wants to exclude family.

The issue is that MIL’s version of “help” appears to come with pressure, expectations, and a need to be involved rather than a willingness to simply support the parents’ wishes.

A delivery room is not a family reunion or a place where people earn a special role because they are excited. It is a medical and emotional space where the birthing parent needs to feel completely comfortable.

There is also an interesting emotional dynamic here. Some people believe that being needed is the same as being helpful.

They see a major life event and immediately focus on how they can participate, rather than asking what would actually reduce stress for the people experiencing it.

MIL may genuinely believe she is offering love, but love can become overwhelming when it ignores the feelings of the person receiving it. Sometimes the most loving action is stepping back.

That perspective fits OP’s situation because MIL’s distress about not being included seems to be becoming another responsibility placed on OP and her husband.

Instead of focusing only on preparing for the baby, they are now having to manage MIL’s feelings about the birth plan.

That is exactly the type of emotional burden many expecting parents try to avoid.

OP’s husband also appears to be making an important change by recognizing that his mother’s intentions do not erase the impact of her behavior. He is not saying MIL is not loved.

He is saying that the people present during birth need to be people who create peace, not additional tension.

The healthiest approach may be for OP and her husband to continue keeping the focus where it belongs: the birth, recovery, and adjustment to becoming parents.

MIL can have a meaningful relationship with the baby later, but access should be based on respect for the parents’ boundaries, not on how strongly she wants a role.

Sometimes protecting a peaceful beginning for a new family means disappointing the people who are used to having more access.

That discomfort does not mean the boundary is wrong. It may simply mean the boundary is necessary.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These commenters connected with the intense anxiety

Taminella_Grinderfal − “She makes me feel like my insides are vibrating” 🤣

I’m dying at how accurate that description is for some people.

Emotional_Builder_24 − “She makes me feel like my insides are vibrating” Is

the EXACT way I feel about my own JNMIL. Oh my gosh I’ve never been

able to put it into words before. Your mom is hilarious.

This group strongly advised keeping MIL unaware of the labor timeline

TypeA_Virgo − Do NOT tell her when you go into labor. Don’t do it. You

don’t owe it to her or anything. Tell her after baby has arrived, you’ve had a

sleep and are good and ready. Tell her baby arrived very quickly and there was no time for phone calls. Outright lie.

DazzlingPotion − Don’t tell her when you go into labor because she’s going to come anyway if you do.

lighthouser41 − Don't call her until after the baby is born.

Saru3020 − Please dont tell her when you are in labor. She doesnt get to

know, especially if she cant handle boundaries. I'd even go as far as to say

the doctor said no visitors for a month, and then only short 20 minute visits

to protect the baby's developing immune system. She can stay in a nearby hotel.

These commenters focused on practical protections, such as locking doors, limiting access, and creating clear rules before the baby arrives

Just-Incident2627 − Make sure your door is locked at all times going

forward, get in the habit now so there’s no risk of her barging in when she

makes a “surprise” visit when she finds out baby has arrived.

Automatic-Rush4259 − So very happy for you that your husband has your

back on this. And agree with suggestions she stay in a hotel. You’re going

to need space and not have her hovering and trying to grab baby and cause you anxiety.

cruiser4319 − You need to insist she stays in a hotel. And she can only come

over when DH is home. Get a door stop so you can get some privacy when

you want it or she will be on your heels the whole time. Send out visitor

rules early- if she complains, add two weeks to her waiting time.

If she violates your baby rules, take baby, go to a room and close the door. (

see door stop). Extend time until next visit to 4-6 weeks. Be a b__ch if you need to, mama bear!

This group argued that MIL should not stay in the home after birth

Trick_Few − Please don’t let her stay when you have a 2 week old newborn.

A hotel is a better option, otherwise, you will be doing a lot of extra work

while they are there. The newborn exhaustion is real.

qdobatruther − Not to tell you what to do because it seems like you and

your husband have it under control, but you may want to consider having

her get a hotel room now that you are a family of 3. If you don’t draw that line now, it will become much harder to draw it later.

I promise, this person sleeping in your postpartum space will not be helpful

for you. It’s very easy to say something like “hey now that we are parents

we are realizing we need our own space. We’re happy to see you next week, but you’ll need to get a hotel room. ”

This story highlights a common tension around major life events: some family members see a birth as an invitation to participate, while the parents see it as a private medical and emotional experience.

OP’s MIL may believe she is offering support, but support only works when it actually reduces stress for the people receiving it.

Do you think OP’s boundaries were reasonable, or should family be given more involvement during such a milestone?

How would you handle a relative who insists their “help” is necessary? Share your thoughts below!
