Men Invite Her To Dinner Dates, Then Reveal They Already Ate To Avoid Paying

Dating can already feel like a guessing game, but sometimes the smallest details reveal a lot about someone’s mindset.

For one woman, the strange pattern wasn’t about bad conversation or awkward chemistry, it was about dinner itself.

After going on several dates recently, OP noticed that multiple men invited her out for a meal but then barely ate, suggested splitting small dishes, or admitted they had already eaten beforehand.

She started wondering whether they were trying to avoid spending money or if something else was going on.

Read on to see why this simple dinner habit became such a frustrating dating experience.

A woman notices several dates suggest dinner but arrive unwilling to order a proper meal

Men Invite Her To Dinner Dates, Then Reveal They Already Ate To Avoid Paying
not the actual photo

'Might be finished with dinner dates..?'

31F, single, I've been on probably 6 or 7 dinner dates in the last few months

and I've noticed something weird.

3 or 4 times now I've had men ask me to dinner and then claim they "aren't

very hungry" and suggest we order a few appetisers or split one main. One

date I had a guy as me to dinner and then say "I actually ate before I came,

let's just get some onion rings or calamari". I had another guys suggest we

split a main and then when it arrived said "I had a huge lunch so you can dig

in, I'll just wait for you". Like he didn't know we were coming to dinner

ahead of time and also it's a bit weird/uncomfortable eating solo while

someone you don't know very well sits there and watches you.

I'm assuming they want to keep the bill low because they assume they're

expected to pay, but I don't really care about who pays on a first date and

am happy to pay separately. I tried saying this to one of them and was like

"I'm happy to split the bill and we can both order whatever we'd like that

way" and he got annoyed immediately and told me he is "very old

fashioned" and doesn't consider it a date if he isn't paying.

The other thing is that NONE of these dates were my idea, they were all

suggested by the guys. Why suggest a dinner date and then eat

beforehand? I don't think I can do dinner dates in the early stages anymore,

I'm leaving them too hungry 😫

A first date is often treated as a small window into someone’s habits, expectations, and communication style.

While a person’s choice of appetizer over a full meal might seem like a minor detail, repeated patterns can reveal something bigger: whether two people are approaching the interaction with the same level of consideration.

In OP’s situation, the issue is not really that these men ordered less expensive food.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to keep a first date casual, being budget-conscious, or even preferring a drink instead of dinner.

The uncomfortable part is the mismatch between what was offered and what actually happened.

They invited OP to dinner, creating an expectation of a shared meal, then arrived having already eaten or avoided ordering while OP was left navigating an awkward situation.

There is another possible perspective: some people may be approaching modern dating with anxiety around money.

With rising costs and uncertainty about dating expectations, some men may feel pressure that a dinner invitation means they must pay for everything.

Instead of openly saying, “I’d rather do coffee or something inexpensive,” they may unconsciously try to control the cost after the fact.

The problem is that avoiding an honest conversation can make the other person feel uncomfortable or even undervalued.

Applied to OP’s experience, the concern is not whether someone buys a $50 meal.

A thoughtful person could easily say beforehand, “I’m trying to keep first dates simple, want to grab coffee?” or “Would you prefer we split dinner?”

That gives both people the ability to choose comfortably.

Arriving hungry enough to order nothing while expecting the other person to eat alone creates an unnecessary imbalance.

OP may also be noticing a compatibility issue rather than a universal dating rule. Some people genuinely enjoy low-cost first meetings and feel awkward about traditional dinner dates.

Others view a dinner invitation as an opportunity to relax, talk, and share an experience.

Neither preference is wrong, but hiding the preference until the date begins is where frustration starts.

A practical solution may be exactly what OP is already considering: choosing different first-date formats.

Coffee, drinks, walks, museums, or casual activities can remove the pressure around money and expectations.

Then, when someone suggests dinner, OP can simply ask, “Are you thinking a full dinner or more of a quick drink?” It is a small question that can prevent a very strange evening.

After all, the goal of a first date is not just finding out whether someone is attractive.

It is seeing whether being around them feels easy, respectful, and enjoyable, including whether both people arrive prepared to participate in the same experience.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These commenters agreed that first dates are often better as coffee or drinks

Noob_at_life1234 − Idk but I also don’t like dinner dates . Eating and

meeting someone foe the first time is too much for me to handle 😭😂 I prefer coffee or drinks

Independent-Emu-6702 − I don’t want dinner as a first date mainly because

I don’t want to be stuck there for a whole meal when you arrive and know

immediately you’re not interested

CranberryStock7148 − I wouldn't even assume it's a financial thing, because

then it's more likely they'd suggest drinks or coffee or something.

Especially because ordering "a few" appetizers is usually just as expensive

as two mains, or even more so. A shocking number of people are on weight

loss drugs right now. They're genuinely not hungry at dinner.

There have been lots of articles on how this is affecting restaurant culture,

exactly like you describe. In any case, I always avoid dinner dates for first

dates because they just take too long, and if you know within 5 minutes you aren't compatible, it's such a waste.

Much easier to meet up for a coffee or drink and then it's much easier to bounce after half an hour.

mavad90 − I'm a guy and would prefer no dinner date the first time either.

Need to weed people out before that. Coffee or drinks first. Cheaper and easier to eject.

Crazy_Custard_2081 − Sounds like some of this is cost related, but also kind

of an escape hatch in case things go downhill. Generally, I'm not a fan of

dinner dates as first dates for many reasons. I much prefer coffee, drinks,

or desserts. More flexible if things go well or not so well.

I also don't like to invest much in a first date because unless this is someone

I already got to know before the date, people have their guard up and are

trying to make an impression. So, you're not really seeing someone's true personality.

Infinite-Arm1313 − This is why dinner dates shouldn’t be the first , coffee or

drinks with the option to grab a bite if we want.

These users shared bad date experiences where the other person controlled the food situation, making the date feel uncomfortable and inconsiderate

Itsalongstory_001 − Ugh I had a guy ask me to dinner and kept raving about

how good the food was. I skipped lunch so I was starving and when I

showed up, he said he wasn't hungry and we should just have a drink at his

house. I declined, and asked the waitress if I could eat in the bar area.

He left and I had a dinner date and drinks with myself and I did not regret it.

Turtle-Stack − Had a guy tell me to show up hungry, then ordered 2

appetizers and told the waitress there would be no main. I frequented the

place and knew it was only like 5-7 bites each, so I suggested we split the

bill and order more since we were hungry. He assured me that it was plenty of food and he always left full.

Felt like he was implying I was a pig. The bill came to a whopping $15.

Awful date. I should've waited for him to leave and got a to go, it was my favorite place!

This group criticized people who invite someone to dinner but avoid actually having a proper dinner, saying expectations should be clear from the start

Illustrious-Low-4475 − Yeah, that's weird. It sounds like they want to appear

chivalrous and pay, but they don't want to shell out for a full meal.

Regardless of who pays, I personally find it inconsiderate to show up for a

dinner date and announce that you're \[he's\] not hungry. What the heck?

It's like getting symphony tickets and then showing up and saying you don't like the symphony. So then what are we doing here, bozo?

AttemptNo1183 − Yeah this is weird 😂 If I ask someone to dinner, I’m

showing up hungry because… I asked you to dinner. If I wanted to keep the

first date cheap or low pressure, I’d suggest drinks, coffee, a walk, whatever from the beginning.

Inviting you to dinner, eating beforehand, then watching you eat by

yourself sounds way more awkward than just being upfront about wanting a casual first date.

Sentence-Parking − You already did the math In the future, decline dinner

date invitations and say you'd rather start with coffee or drinks. Boom done.

This story is really about expectations and consideration more than the actual cost of dinner.

OP wasn’t upset about splitting a bill, she was confused because these men invited her to a meal and then arrived seemingly unprepared to share the experience.

A date should feel like two people enjoying time together, not one person awkwardly eating while the other watches.

Do you think these men were trying to save money, being inconsiderate, or simply bad at planning?

Would you keep accepting dinner dates or switch to coffee and casual meetups first? Share your thoughts below!
