Pregnant Mom Is Shocked When MIL Tries To Claim Her Unborn Baby As Her Own

Planning for the possibility of losing both parents is one of the hardest responsibilities any family can face, especially when young children are involved.

OP and her husband already had a clear plan for their four children: they would all stay together with OP’s parents if something happened to them.

That plan seemed settled until MIL casually suggested that she should get custody of the new baby instead.

OP was stunned by the idea that anyone would even consider separating a newborn from their siblings during such a traumatic situation.

Now she is trying to prepare herself for the inevitable conversation while reminding herself to keep the children’s needs at the center of everything.

Pregnant mother is stunned when her MIL suggests separating her unborn baby from its siblings after their parents die

'MIL wants my baby if we die.?'

Hey 🫣. Sooooo…

Me and my husband are expecting our first baby together. I have 3 children

from a prior marriage. I am friends with my ex husband, amicable. I have

full custody, he has them some weekends, but his disability is getting worse.

Anyway, it’s always been the case that all of the children will go to my

parents in the event of mine and my husbands death (they won’t be going

to their father, we all decided it was best and more optimal for the children

to go to my parents). We’ve all always know where we all stand.

Today on the phone, my husband was just talking to his mother about

various things and casually mentioned how much a solicitor costs as we

need to go there and get a will sorted out and specify all these important

factors like ensuring all 4 children (3 plus our baby that’s currently cooking)

go to my parents and we need to make sure insurance money also goes there.

My mother in law replied quite entitled snooty tone “well no, can’t I have

one..?” (Implying she should get the baby in the event of our deaths)

therefore separating that child from its siblings….. This is literally what NO

one wants. Hence why that IS NOT what’s going to happen.

I was just so shocked that she’d even suggest something so selfish, actually

think it’s reasonable to seperate siblings when their parents just died, AND

had such a sense of entitlement that she thought she actually gets a say in

what happens to someone else’s children??. She made it sound like

choosing a puppy out of a litter. Her tone really riled me up.

I know it’s going to get bought up next time we see her. And she’s going to

act like life isn’t fair and she can’t have what she wants. It’s not even about her 🫩

I will not be a monster in law I will not be a monster in law I will not be a

monster in law…. I will put the children first I will put the children first I will

put the children first…. I will be evolved and healthy…. I will respect

another couples boundaries. And repeat after me.

Few things expose family dynamics more quickly than a conversation about what happens to children if their parents are no longer there.

It forces everyone to confront an unimaginable possibility, but it also reveals whether adults are thinking about the children’s needs or their own emotional desires.

In this case, the OP was shocked because her MIL’s response seemed to turn a carefully considered parenting decision into a competition over who gets the baby.

The emotional tension is understandable.

The OP and her husband had already established a plan involving all four children, with the goal of keeping siblings together after an unimaginable loss.

MIL’s comment appears to have challenged that plan without considering the consequences of separating the newborn from three siblings who had already lost their parents.

What particularly irritated the OP was the sense of entitlement behind the question: MIL seemed to assume that being the grandmother gave her a legitimate claim to the child.

There is another perspective worth considering, though. MIL may have been reacting emotionally rather than deliberately trying to divide the siblings.

Becoming a grandmother can create an intense attachment to the idea of protecting a grandchild, and hearing that someone else would raise that child after the parents’ deaths could trigger fear, grief, or insecurity.

That does not make the comment appropriate, but understanding the emotion behind it can prevent the OP from turning one insensitive remark into a permanent family war.

That distinction is particularly relevant here. MIL is allowed to feel disappointed.

She is allowed to imagine herself raising her grandchild. What she is not entitled to do is override the parents’ carefully considered plan simply because she dislikes it.

The children are not prizes to be divided among relatives. Their stability, existing relationships, and emotional security should come first.

The OP’s instinct to repeat “I will put the children first” is therefore useful, but perhaps the healthiest version of that mantra is to remain calm rather than defensive.

She does not need to convince MIL that the plan is fair. She and her husband simply need to establish it legally and communicate it clearly.

Ultimately, guardianship after a parent’s death is not about which relative feels most deserving.

It is about creating the safest, most stable environment for the children left behind.

If that means keeping four siblings together with the people their parents trust, then the adults around them need to respect that decision, even when it hurts their feelings.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These commenters focused on contingency planning

FullyRisenPhoenix − I have a backup for my backups. Get it in writing, and

make sure you can prove the kids have a solid relationship with the people

you choose as potential guardians. They should also be made aware of her

hope to separate the siblings so they are prepared for any situation MIL might try to force on them.

Preparation is key here, and letting absolutely everyone in your lives know

your wishes, so they can act as witnesses should the worst happen. We’ve

had it in our Will since the day our first son was born, and we have revisited

the topic frequently with friends, cousins, and even teachers when I was sick and my husband was recovering from a stroke.

Just in case….

Disastrous-Panda5530 − My MIL wanted my kids also. And I knew she’d try

to bully mh parents for them. There is a reason I’ve never let her see the

kids unsupervised and her visits are now limited to 1-2 times a year. She

was furious when she found out we had our will done both kids to go to my sister.

My sister lives half an hour away and she’s close to both of my kids and my

nephew is the same age as my daughter. And if she couldn’t take care of them then they’d go to my parents.

My parents are 65 now but now my kids are 19 and 15 so it wouldn’t be

hard on them and my kids love my parents and are really close to especially

my mom. Your MIL is awful for saying she’d take the baby. To not only separate the baby from their siblings but to act entitled

They were particularly disturbed by the MIL’s willingness to separate siblings

OodalollyOodalolly − I am non confrontational so if she ever brings it up I’d

honestly just laugh and say well the chances of that happening is so very slim, I don’t think you need to even think about it ever happening!

So weird that she would think it would be appropriate for a child to lose

living with their entire sibling group in the case of being orphaned! How

ludicrous! As an aside, it smacks of favoritism that is disgusting. Does she

only see the baby as her grandchild? And would live happily raising her grandchild separately? ICK

Serafirelily − You realize that the moment this baby is born she is going to

treat you other children like they are not her grandchildren and favor her

biological grandchild. Her commitment about keeping the baby proves this

and you and your husband need to be ready for it. Letting her do this will

cause problems between your children and that is the last thing you want.

Lugbor − "No, MIL, we will not be separating our children just so you can

feel important. That you would even think of tearing them away from each

other is disgusting and only confirms that you are not fit to raise them in

the event of our deaths. " Loudly and in front of others if you have to.

Let the shame deal with her, if she's even capable of feeling any.

This group argued that the MIL’s statement itself is evidence that she should not be entrusted with guardianship

Daddyslittlemonster8 − Her saying it out loud. It’s scary. You and your

husband better find a lawyer and make sure she doesn’t end up as guardian

if anything were to happen to you both. And it’s time for boundaries. I won’t leave her a lone with any child.

ElizaJaneVegas − She doesn’t care what’s best for the children - a sure sign of why she should NOT get one.

These commenters criticized the decision to disclose the will arrangements

DazzlingPotion − Your husband should have kept the details of your wills

between the two of you. There was NO good to tell her. Same thing goes with anything financial. Massive mistake.

CrinklyPacket − “I’m so glad you would want to continue to be a part of our

children’s lives if we pass, that’s lovely to hear. You’re welcome to build a

good relationship with my parents so you can be there for them and support them if the worst ever happens”. P. S, GTF.

anonymousmouse9786 − This is a great lesson in not over sharing this kind

of information. Your MIL doesn’t need to know your legal plans. You and SO should learn to gray rock.

Known-Grapefruit4032 − You shouldn't have told her. Your husband

casually dropping it in under the guise of asking for her knowledge on

solicitors was (maybe subconsciously, I'll give you that) deliberately bating

the bear. There's a little piece of him and you that wants to stick it to his

mother. But this probably wasn't worth it, as you'll never hear the end of it now.

My mother is also a very difficult character. If me and my husband die, our

children will go to my brother and sister in law. But my mum doesn't know

this and she doesn't need to. We have it tied up legally and my brother

knows the drill, if the worst happens, do not give her an inch, she will take a mile.

She has said in the past she would take the kids if the worst happens. I

smile blandly, look vaguely in a different direction and say 'that's so kind,

they're lucky to have a granny that loves them'. And then I change the

subject. Hopefully she'll never need to know.   I'd recommend being more

selective about what info you share in future. Good luck!

The MIL’s comment may have been only a few words, but it revealed a much bigger issue: she apparently imagined having a claim to the baby’s future without considering the siblings’ needs or the parents’ wishes.

OP already has a clear plan that keeps all four children together, and that should remain the priority.

Do you think OP is right to shut this conversation down before it becomes a family conflict, or should MIL be allowed to express her wishes?

How would you respond if a grandparent treated guardianship like something they were entitled to choose? Share your thoughts below!
