Her Best Friend Said Her “Dirty” House Was Making Her Kids Sick, and She Finally Lost Her Patience

in Social Issues

For years, this 32-year-old mother had been known as the friend whose house was always spotless.

Then she had her second child, and everything changed.

She now has two boys, ages 4 and 2, and describes her younger son as a “tornado” who can turn a clean room into a disaster almost instantly. There have been accidents involving poop, food thrown everywhere, toys that had to be thrown away, and bedding that was too difficult to salvage.

But she insists she cleans.

The problem is that she no longer has the energy or physical ability to maintain the immaculate home she once had. After giving birth to her second child, she experienced severe postpartum depression and later developed fibromyalgia, leaving her in constant pain. Her husband wasn’t particularly supportive either, and their marriage nearly fell apart.

So when her best friend suggested that the children were constantly sick because their house was dirty, she didn’t hear concern.

She heard judgment.

And after years of backhanded comments about her housekeeping, she finally snapped.

Her Best Friend Said Her “Dirty” House Was Making Her Kids Sick, and She Finally Lost Her Patience

'AITA for how I reacted to my best friend saying my “dirty” house is making my kids sick?'

Sorry if this is all over the place; there are a lot of moving parts here. I have written and rewritten this a million times so that it’s not a...

I (32F) got into an argument with my best friend (31F) after she suggested my kids are constantly sick because my house is dirty.

For context, I have two boys, 4 and 2; and she has a daughter, 5. My oldest and her daughter are thick as thieves and my son is asking about...

After having my second, it became very difficult keeping up with housework. I had crippling post partum depression and also developed fibromyalgia, which left me in constant pain.

My husband also wasn’t being supportive or helpful at the time and our marriage almost ended because of it. Before my second was born, my house was always sparkling.

As my second grew older, he became a tornado. The poop she’s mentioning in the texts did happen. And happens often. We immediately clean it up and even throw away...

that would be too much to clean. He also plays with his food more than he eats. It’s a f***ing constant mess and it’s exhausting.

But we DO clean it. I called early intervention and he does qualify for OT and speech therapy. So it’s not me being lazy, it’s just a lot to handle...

The kids are not sick constantly. It’s mainly during cold/flu season, which makes sense since my husband and I, along with our primary sitter, all work in the service industry.

The last text of mine mentioning her daughter getting my kids sick is referring to when she didn’t tell us her daughter was sick, so that we didn’t back out...

I know I may have been a bit emotionally charged in my texts but I was just fed up. This is coming after constant back handed comments about my house...

(which includes cleaning the walls and spot treating the carpet). Every time we’ve gotten into a huge fight like this,

I’ve always been the one to break the silence and get us back in track, but I really don’t want to this time. So, AITA or should I stick to...

Her House Wasn’t Always Like This

The woman explained that before her second son was born, keeping the house clean wasn’t a problem.

She liked having a spotless home and was apparently very good at maintaining it.

Then motherhood became significantly harder.

Her postpartum depression made ordinary responsibilities feel overwhelming, while fibromyalgia added chronic pain and fatigue to the equation. The CDC notes that fibromyalgia can involve widespread pain, fatigue, sleep problems, and emotional distress, all of which can affect a person’s quality of life and daily functioning.

Postpartum depression can also involve extreme fatigue, difficulty concentrating, guilt, and difficulty carrying out everyday tasks, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.

None of that means the condition excuses an unsafe home.

But it does provide important context.

She wasn’t sitting on the couch watching television while deliberately refusing to clean.

She was trying to keep up with two very young children while dealing with significant physical and mental health challenges.

And her youngest apparently wasn’t making things any easier.

Then There Was the Poop Incident

One of the things her friend brought up was poop getting onto toys.

The mother admits it happened.

And, according to her, it happens more than once.

But she says the mess is dealt with immediately. Sometimes toys, stuffed animals, bedding, or other objects are thrown away because cleaning them isn’t worth the effort.

Her youngest also apparently enjoys playing with his food more than eating it, creating another daily mess.

On top of that, he receives occupational therapy and speech therapy after the mother contacted early intervention and discovered that he qualified for services.

From her perspective, the situation isn’t about laziness.

It’s about having a two-year-old who requires extra support while she is already stretched to her limits.

She also argues that the children aren’t actually sick all the time.

Most of their illnesses happen during cold and flu season, which she considers unsurprising because she, her husband, and their primary babysitter all work in the service industry.

There was, however, one incident that made the friend’s comments especially painful.

Her friend’s daughter became sick but apparently wasn’t disclosed to the family before they agreed to watch her.

The woman’s youngest son subsequently contracted RSV and ended up hospitalized for three days.

He was only one year old.

So when the friend later suggested that her own house might be responsible for her children’s illnesses, the mother had a very specific memory of an illness that came from somewhere else.

Was the Friend Concerned or Being Judgmental?

This is where the situation becomes much harder to judge.

The woman says her friend has repeatedly made comments about the cleanliness of her house, including suggestions that she should clean more even after she completes a deep clean roughly once a week.

She says these deep cleans aren’t superficial either. She cleans walls, spot-treats carpets, and tries to deal with the constant mess as best she can.

Eventually, another comment became the breaking point.

Her friend suggested that the children being sick was connected to the state of the house.

The mother responded emotionally, bringing up the previous situation where the friend’s sick daughter had been around her children without the illness being disclosed.

She admits she was angry.

But after years of feeling criticized, she was tired of being the one who always apologized first whenever they fought.

This time, she wanted to stay silent.

There May Be Truth on Both Sides

The most uncomfortable possibility is that both women could have a legitimate point.

Without seeing the house, Reddit commenters couldn’t know whether the mother’s description was accurate.

Several people pointed out that there is a huge difference between a home that is cluttered and messy because two toddlers live there and a home that contains persistent sanitation hazards.

One commenter specifically mentioned that people can become accustomed to smells or conditions in their own homes and sometimes don’t realize how noticeable they are to outsiders.

That is worth considering.

At the same time, calling someone’s house “dirty” is unlikely to make them more capable of cleaning it, especially when that person has already explained that depression, chronic pain, young children, and a lack of support are making the task difficult.

The National Institute of Mental Health specifically recommends practical help from family and friends for people experiencing perinatal depression, including assistance with household tasks.

That distinction matters.

A real friend can say, “I’m worried about you and the kids.”

But a real friend can also follow that concern with, “What can I do to help?”

The Best Friend May Have Been Trying to Help

One Reddit commenter shared a striking personal story.

When her best friend had three children in three years, suffered a devastating loss, and developed serious mental health struggles, she didn’t simply tell her friend to clean her house.

She helped.

She pushed the friend’s husband toward getting treatment, helped the mother seek professional care, took time off work, cleaned the house, filled the freezer, watched the children, and simply sat beside her friend when things became overwhelming.

Years later, she was still helping with an annual deep clean.

That commenter captured an important distinction between criticism and intervention.

Sometimes love means saying something uncomfortable.

But it also means being willing to stand next to someone while they deal with the problem.

The mother in this story may need to hear that her house could be cleaner.

She may also need someone to recognize that maintaining a perfect home while caring for two toddlers isn’t a reasonable standard, especially while dealing with chronic health challenges.

The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development even advises new mothers to be realistic, noting that they don’t have to maintain a “perfect” home and should ask family and friends for help with household chores when needed.

Here's the input from the Reddit crowd:

Rblooks − Show us the house.

Lowered-ex − I’m more confused about why she keeps saying your kids never leave the house. What is that about?

emmakobs − Honestly if your friends kid came over and noticed s__t-smeared toys, and you yourself claim it's happened MULTIPLE times,

I don't think you have a leg to stand on here. Clean your house or don't but your friend is just looking out for her kids. Being o__rwhelmed might be...

DanceRepresentative7 − i've seen a lot of people live in absolute filth and get extremely defensive saying they clean when they don't and there are severe mental health problems at...

could this be your friend using some tough love and a sort of intervention? only you know for sure but only if you're honest with yourself

Ancient_Soft413 − this is going to be controversial but u have to have no ego when it comes to ur kids its worth considering as much as it hurts and...

OneRaisedEyebrow − For context, my best friend had 3 kids in 3 years. Her dad died right after she had the 3rd. She had crippling grief, postpartum anxiety and was...

Her husband, the child of 2 alcoholics, fell into the bottle. Do you know what I did? Browbeat him (lovingly) into rehab. Took her to the doctor and got her...

And then I took a week off, cleaned her house, filled the freezer, took care of the kids and laid in bed and cried with her after we put the...

And I went there two weekends a month for years just to be extra hands. Her husband got clean and has stayed clean. 15 years into their marriage, they’ve survived...

Ten years later, I still take one long weekend a year that I send her and husband away and the kids and I scrub the house top to bottom,

go through their clothes, donate old toys and make cute art projects to tell her and her husband what good parents they are. Best friends help.

We point out the hard truth sometimes, but then are part of a solution. Even if all we have to offer are meals, hugs or an ear. Or a bucket...

BoomyNote − Without seeing your house we have to consider the possibility that you don’t realize how bad it is, people with pets for example often don’t realize their house...

This might not be the case and probably isn’t, but it’s hard to definitively pick a side or affirm you when in theory your house really could be a nightmare...

SipSurielTea − She sounds like a real friend if she's willing to have a hard conversation like this with you.

SoftConfusion42 − Without any pictures how could we even pick a side?

smurfopolis − Sounds like your friend was coming from a place of love and trying to help, and you are taking it as a personal attack.

She's not saying you are not a good mother or anything bad by suggesting a deep clean, you say yourself you've been having troubles keeping up. It's ok, were human...

Be kinder to yourself and to the people around you trying to help.   Remember that this is coming from your self admitted best friend.

She's clearly seen what's going on in your house. Sometimes we become blind to things in our own homes and we need someone to point things out for us.

There's no need to end a friendship with someone you call your best friend because they suggested a deep clean of your house.

Final Thoughts

This isn’t really a story about whether a house is clean enough.

It’s about what happens when concern, exhaustion, shame, and friendship collide.

The mother shouldn’t automatically dismiss her friend’s concerns simply because they hurt. Her children’s safety has to come first.

But she also shouldn’t be expected to maintain the same standards she had before having two young children, experiencing postpartum depression, and developing a chronic pain condition.

Sometimes the most loving thing a friend can do is tell you an uncomfortable truth.

Sometimes the most loving thing they can do is pick up a sponge and help you deal with it.

And perhaps the real question isn’t whether she owes her friend an apology.

It’s whether both women can stop trying to win the argument long enough to remember why they became best friends in the first place.
