She Tried to Handle Her Difficult Coworker Through Supervisors, Then Went to HR After a Headlock

in Social Issues

Sometimes workplace conflicts start with something incredibly small.

A personality clash. A disagreement. Two people simply not liking each other.

But this situation started that way and somehow escalated into something much more serious.

The poster had become close friends with a new coworker, H, after she joined their department. They spent weekends together, hung out after work, and even took an international trip with members of the poster’s family.

Then H developed a dislike for another coworker.

There wasn’t an obvious reason. H simply didn’t like S and made it increasingly clear that she expected the poster to feel the same way.

When the poster continued talking to S, H would become cold, make comments about their friendship, or stop speaking to her entirely until the poster reassured her.

Eventually, the friendship fell apart.

But the workplace conflict didn’t.

And after two attempts to resolve the situation through supervisors failed, the poster finally went to HR.

Now she’s wondering whether she made the situation worse by doing so.

'AITAH for going to HR after 2 failed attempts with supervisors?'

I am in a weird situation at work. About a year and half ago, a new employee (H) started in our department.

She seemed like a nice person and we hit it off pretty quickly. We started going out on weekends and hanging out at my house after work. We even went...

However, one day, she disclosed to me she didn’t like another one of our co-workers (S) (for no reason, just a feeling she got).

H didn’t directly say she wanted me to stop speaking to his co-worker, but she would often say I wasn’t her “friend” because I continued talking to her.

This really changed our dynamic. We could be having a great day, the co-worker walks in and if I spoke to her at all, H would not speak to me for...

One day, S came into the office and we spoke for about 10 minutes, S left, and H said “I can tell your not really my friend”.

I replied “Be nice, its not that serious”. H said for me to not tell her what to do and turned to face her computer.

After like 10 minutes passes, H comes to me from behind when I am talking to one of my employees and outs me in a head lock. I was so...

Her birthday was coming up and I attended her party but after that we barely spoke, then not at all.

I found out H was telling several people in the office a completely different version of the story and also saying some bad things about me.

This was like 4 months after the headlock. Because we weren't talking anymore, I asked her supervisor (M) if she could talk to H about her behavior.

The next few weeks H made my life a living nightmare. There's a lot so I won't go into details but very unprofessional and concerning behaviors.

Day after day it was something new. I ended up asking my supervisor if he could step in and help out.

That only made things even worse and I felt forced to go to HR. I told them everything from the headlock to now.

Their solution was to move H to another office int he building. I do still see her occasionally and she makes it very obvious that she doesn't like me. .

While I am glad H doesn't work in the same area as us, her supervisor M has now completely stopped talking to me. She goes out of her was to...

Even today, I thought M was talking to all of us in a group but when I responded she literally looked at me with disgust and turned her back to...

In total this has been going on since last June and I am just so overwhelmed and tired ignoring both of their attempts to hurt me. AITAH for going to...

EDIT: Thank you for listening. It’s been hard keeping everything bottled up but I did feel guilty for speaking up because it had a bad outcome.

I think I may have felt out numbered and that made me feel like I was wrong or the problem.

I will continue documenting everything and get a dash cam. I do fest this situation could escalate and at the very least I need ti protect myself.

The Friendship Changed Everything

When H first started working in the department about a year and a half ago, she and the poster quickly became friends.

They weren’t just coworkers.

They spent time together outside work, visited each other’s homes, and even traveled internationally with the poster’s family.

Then H told her that she didn’t like another coworker, S.

There apparently wasn’t a specific incident behind the dislike. H simply said she had a bad feeling about S.

The poster didn’t feel the same way.

She continued talking to S at work, which became a recurring source of tension.

Whenever S entered the office and the poster spoke with her, H would sometimes stop talking to the poster for the rest of the day. Other times, she’d make a pointed comment about the poster not being a “real friend.”

The poster eventually told H to be nice and reminded her that it wasn’t that serious.

H didn’t appreciate the advice.

She told the poster not to tell her what to do and turned back toward her computer.

Then, roughly ten minutes later, things crossed a completely different line.

While the poster was speaking to one of her employees, H approached from behind and put her in a headlock.

The poster was furious.

But instead of immediately escalating the situation, she chose to remain quiet because she wanted to keep the peace.

That decision would later become important.

The Situation Became Impossible to Ignore

H’s birthday came around, and the poster still attended her party.

Afterward, however, their relationship essentially disappeared.

Eventually, the poster discovered that H was telling coworkers a different version of what had happened between them and making negative comments about her.

Since the two women were no longer speaking, the poster tried the managerial route.

She asked H’s supervisor, M, to talk with H about her behavior.

For a while, that seemed like the appropriate solution.

It didn’t work.

According to the poster, H’s behavior over the following weeks became increasingly unprofessional and concerning. She says there were so many incidents that she doesn’t even want to list them all.

Eventually, she went to her own supervisor and asked for help.

That intervention apparently made the situation even worse.

At that point, the poster felt she had exhausted the informal options available to her.

So she went to HR.

She explained everything, including the headlock and what had happened afterward.

HR’s solution was to move H to another office in the building.

For the poster, that was at least some relief.

H no longer worked in the same immediate area.

But the story wasn’t over.

Now the Supervisor Was Treating Her Differently

The poster noticed that M, H’s supervisor, had essentially stopped speaking to her.

M would ignore her unless she had no choice but to interact with her.

Then came an incident that really bothered the poster.

She believed M was speaking to a group of employees, so she responded to the conversation.

M looked at her with what the poster described as disgust and turned away, effectively excluding her from the conversation.

After everything that had happened, the poster couldn’t help wondering whether she was being punished for going to HR.

She had already spent months trying to ignore the situation.

Now she felt as though she was being isolated for finally speaking up.

The entire ordeal had been going on since the previous June, and she was exhausted.

Her question to Reddit was simple:

Was she wrong for going to HR after two supervisors failed to resolve the situation?

Reporting a Serious Workplace Problem Isn’t the Same as Creating One

There is an important distinction here.

Going to HR doesn’t automatically mean someone has a legally protected harassment or retaliation claim. In the United States, federal anti-harassment laws generally cover unwelcome conduct tied to protected characteristics such as sex, race, religion, national origin, disability, or age, and legal standards depend heavily on the circumstances.

But that doesn’t mean employees should stay silent about serious workplace behavior.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission advises employees who experience workplace harassment to report it through appropriate channels when the conduct doesn’t stop, and it specifically notes that employees can report concerns to a supervisor or HR.

The physical incident described here is particularly concerning.

A coworker putting someone in a headlock isn’t simply an awkward personality disagreement. OSHA’s workplace-violence guidance encourages employers to report and investigate violent incidents and threats and to take corrective action when necessary.

The poster also shouldn’t assume that every cold look or ignored greeting from M automatically constitutes illegal retaliation. The EEOC explains that retaliation under federal EEO laws requires specific elements, including protected activity and a materially adverse action connected to that activity.

Still, documenting the behavior is reasonable.

If the treatment changed after the HR complaint, dates, witnesses, messages, work assignments, and specific examples can help establish what actually happened instead of relying on vague impressions.

And that’s exactly what the poster says she plans to do.

Here's what people had to say to OP:

Cautious_Draw5738 − This is a weekly reminder to not befriend coworkers. NTA, this woman sounds genuinely dangerous

butchdykeblues − Dude you need to get the labour board involved if there is one. Your managers are negligent and straight up ignoring the fact that someone TRIED TO STRANGLE...

Bitter-Composer9508 − NTA, and you need to go to HR and explain the issue has continued. I’m genuinely baffled that this kind of behavior is evening happening at a place...

Nolongeranalpha − Excluding you from team communications after an HR visit is retaliation. Document document document.

gusbus200 − Obviously NTA based on how you tell the tale but idk why you are surprised that her manager has taken H's side or that people avoid talking to...

allie06nd − NTA, and I'd speak with an employment attorney if I were you. The fact that this went unaddressed for so long and the fact that there is now...

Equivalent_Lemon_319 − The only thing you did wrong here was wait so long to do something. You were assaulted at work

spongebobsworsthole − NTA, go back to HR and say, “I’ve noticed M going out of her way to ignore me and giving me dirty looks.

She has been doing this in front of other coworkers and it’s embarrassing. I feel that M is retaliating against me for going to HR.

H is also telling other coworkers an inaccurate version of what happened between me and her.

I feel that she is trying to damage my relationships with them. ” Specifically use the word retaliate, it sets off the legal issue alarm bells.

They’ll take it more seriously, and force M to be more civil towards you. Some of your coworkers just won’t like you anymore tho, and that sucks.

HoldFastO2 − NTA. And honestly, I’d go to HR again and complain about M this time. She doesn’t have to talk to you, no, but cutting you out of work...

Wide-Perspective-864 − You are being an i__ot. Dont ask - TELL them about the consequence non-action on this matter will attract. You HAVE to create an expectation, and then that...

Not feelings. Friends, fair, these are all useless concepts. Report this, be firm, and make it clear what is continuing.

Just a hint of them being liable for a__ault or criminal damage on work premises is far more serious than feelings.

Final Thoughts

The poster probably could have reported the headlock much earlier.

In hindsight, staying silent may have allowed the situation to become more complicated than it needed to be.

But that doesn’t make her responsible for everything that happened afterward.

She tried friendship.

She tried ignoring the problem.

She asked H’s supervisor for help.

She asked her own supervisor for help.

When those approaches didn’t solve the situation, she went to HR.

That’s what workplace reporting systems are there for.

Now, rather than getting pulled into another round of arguments with H or M, the smartest move is probably exactly what the poster says she’s going to do: keep communication professional, document concrete incidents, preserve relevant messages, and report new problems through the appropriate channels.

She doesn’t need to win a popularity contest at work.

She needs to be able to do her job without being physically confronted, targeted, or pushed into feeling unsafe for speaking up.
