Woman Sells Concert Ticket for Triple the Price, Then Demands Her Cousin’s Ticket When Plans Change

Concert tickets can turn into surprisingly complicated family drama when money and last-minute plans get involved. One minute, you’re excited about seeing your favorite artist with someone close to you; the next, you’re being told that the ticket you paid for should somehow belong to the person who sold theirs for nearly three times the original price.

That’s exactly what happened to the OP and her cousin. They had bought tickets for a sold-out concert, with the OP paying for both upfront before her cousin reimbursed her. When the cousin later decided she couldn’t attend, OP offered to find a friend willing to buy the ticket for the same price. Instead, the cousin chose to resell it online for a huge profit.

Then, in an unexpected twist, she discovered she could attend after all and asked to use OP’s ticket, suggesting that OP simply buy another one with some of the resale money.

OP refused and decided to go with the friend who had originally been interested in the ticket. Now her cousin is furious, and even her aunt thinks she is being unnecessarily petty. So, was OP wrong to hold onto the ticket she already owned?

A concert dispute erupts after a woman sells her ticket for profit, then asks for her cousin’s

'AITA for refusing to give my cousin the concert ticket I bought after she sold hers for a profit?'

A few months ago my cousin and I got tickets for a concert that sold out really fast.

I bought both tickets upfront and she paid me back for hers a few days later.

Last week she told me she couldn't go anymore and asked if I knew anyone who wanted her ticket.

I said one of my friends would probably take it and pay her exactly what she paid.

Instead she listed it online and sold it for almost three times the original price.

Now the weird part.

Yesterday she found out she actually can go after all, and she asked if she could use MY ticket since I was originally going mostly because of her.

She said I could just buy another one with some of the money she made from kick streams.

I told her absolutely not. I'm still going and I'm taking the friend who was going to buy her ticket in the first place.

She's pissed because according to her, I wouldn't even care about this concert if she hadn't invited me to begin with.

My aunt has also gotten involved and thinks I'm being petty because my cousin offered to split some of the resale profit with me.

I feel like she made her choice when she sold the ticket. AITA?

Few conflicts become frustrating faster than being asked to sacrifice something because another person regrets a decision they freely made. The OP’s cousin originally owned her concert ticket and had every right to sell it. She chose to exercise that right—and benefited considerably by reselling it for nearly three times what she paid.

The problem began when her circumstances changed and she expected the OP to surrender a completely separate ticket so she could undo her choice without absorbing its consequences.

Emotionally, the OP’s refusal does not sound primarily motivated by revenge. His cousin transformed her ticket into money, while he kept his because he still wanted the concert experience.

Her later argument that he only cared about attending because she originally invited him does not give her continuing ownership over his plans. People can become interested in an experience through somebody else and still develop an independent right to enjoy it.

There is also a useful perspective hiding underneath the argument about resale profits. The cousin is effectively asking the OP to provide insurance against her own decision. She captured the upside when resale prices were high, but once she wanted to attend again, she expected someone else to absorb the downside.

Offering to share some profit may sound generous, yet it does not restore the OP’s ticket or guarantee that another comparable seat can be purchased. Fairness does not necessarily mean splitting money; sometimes it means allowing each person to live with the outcome of the choice they controlled.

Psychologist Jennifer Caspari, Ph.D., explains that healthy boundaries define what behavior people are willing to accept while preserving autonomy within relationships. She emphasizes that boundaries are not methods for controlling somebody else; rather, they establish what a person will do when their own needs or limits are involved.

Clear consequences also matter because boundaries become ineffective when other people can repeatedly cross them without meaningful results.

The APA’s definition of social exchange theory adds another layer. Relationships often involve an implicit expectation of reciprocity and fairness, with people evaluating whether benefits and costs are distributed reasonably between them.

In this case, the cousin’s proposal heavily favors her: she keeps much of the financial benefit from selling while recovering access to the event through somebody else’s sacrifice.

So the OP is not being petty by keeping a ticket he purchased and never offered to surrender. The realistic consequence of selling a scarce ticket is that attending later may become expensive or impossible.

Family relationships work better when generosity remains voluntary rather than becoming an obligation created by someone else’s regret. The cousin made a profitable choice. She can also own what came with it.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These Redditors said the cousin should simply use her resale money to buy another ticket

zeebasaur − Why can't she buy her own new ticket? NTA

gnomem0m − NTA. She can try to buy another ticket with the money she made. This has nothing to do with you and your ticket.

shiggity80 − NTA. Seems like your cousin can easily just buy another ticket. Did your friend end up buying their own ticket then if your cousin sold hers?

Fun-Yellow-6576 − NTA. She can buy another ticket!

These commenters felt the cousin was selfishly trying to make OP absorb the consequences of her profitable resale

CatsMom4Ever − "Hi, you give me your ticket for free and YOU pay the inflated resale price. "

Or, "I'll buy yours at face value and you can buy a new one at the inflated resale price "

Either way it's: "I liked the original seats and you can just sit anywhere you can possibly find a seat. " NTA.

Worth-Two7263 − She found out she could get three times the price and now wants YOUR ticket to resell again. NTA.

haileyskydiamonds − NTA. I wouldn’t give her your own ticket. How did you get a new ticket for your friend?

This commenter mocked the predictable family members who somehow side with the unreasonable person

Salty_Finance5183 − Why do these stories always have a family member who thinks the a__hole isn't an a__hole?

The cousin was entitled to sell the ticket she had paid for. That freedom works both ways.

Her cousin is equally entitled to keep the ticket he paid for, attend the concert, and decline to absorb the inconvenience or inflated replacement cost created by her decision.

Research on bargaining shows that perceived fairness influences decisions even when money is offered as compensation. In this case, sharing some resale profit does not necessarily make the proposed arrangement feel fair because the burden is still being shifted onto the person who never sold anything.

The simplest solution requires no family summit at all. She sold her ticket. If she wants another one, she can buy another one.
