Bakery Worker Meets Her First “Karen” on Day Two Over a Six-Dollar Loaf of Sourdough

Working with the public usually means learning how to stay polite when someone else has decided their inconvenience is now your emergency. Most customers are patient with new employees, but every so often, one person turns a tiny mistake into a full performance.

One bakery worker shared her first memorable encounter with an entitled customer during only her second day on the job. The woman wanted a loaf of sourdough sliced to a specific thickness and quickly became irritated when the new employee used a bag that was slightly too wide.

The bread itself was fine, but its appearance apparently became grounds for demanding a discount, and later something even better. All the while, the customer insisted she was in a massive hurry despite casually eating gelato during the exchange. Scroll down to see how the bakery handled her expectations.

A new bakery worker faces an entitled customer demanding a discount over a minor bread-bagging mistake

'My first Karen encounter!'

I recently started a part-time job at a bakery in a nicer than average grocery store.

Many of the customers are well to do, and the vast majority are lovely people, but we do rarely have some entitled folks come in.

Me: Hello there! How can I help you?. Karen: (Casually eating gelato from our cafe) Where is your sourdough?

Me: (Walks her over to the large sign and basket) Right over here. Would you care to have it sliced?. Karen: Gimme a 12

Me: (Not having used the automated slicer yet, am slightly confused) Do you mean 12 slices? Or is there a specific thickness you would like?

Karen: It’s just a 12. That’s what I always get.. Me: Alright then, let me take a look here.

There are numerical codes that translate to slice thickness, and I find the key written on tape on the slicer. 12 = 1/2 inch. Easy.

I figure out the slicer quickly, but am unsure of which bags to use.

For sliced bread we use plastic, with an option for a labeled paper bag to place the plastic bag into.

I take the only plastic bag size I can see available and place the loaf into it.

It turns out to be too wide, so the loaf comes apart and forms a bundle of slices in the bag.

Me: Oh shoot. Looks like this bag is a bit wide.

If you don’t mind it like this I can give it to you now, or if you prefer the full loaf look I can find the narrower bags real quick.

Karen: (Making a sour face) Ugh, no that looks terrible. I expect to only pay half price if it’s like that.

I’m in a rush, I left my car running.. It’s 100 degrees outside, so I assume she has a dog or kid in the car.

Me: No problem, it will only take a second for me to put the loaf back together. Do you have a dog waiting in the car? It’s a good thing...

Karen: No.

Me: (Tempted to mention the no idling law we have because of terrible pollution) Oh.

Well thank you for your patience, today is my second day and I’m still learning where everything is.

I still can’t find the narrow plastic bags, but I’m trying to hurry because, you know, she put herself into a hurry so now it’s my problem.

Me: I apologize, I’m not sure where the narrow plastic bags are.

I’m happy to ask my supervisor where they are, she should be back from break any time now. Otherwise I can put it in this paper loaf bag.

Karen: (Visibly annoyed, but still nibbling her gelato)

No. This is ridiculous. It needs plastic too and I’m in a hurry. I guess I’ll just have to put it in a bag myself when I get home.

I hand her the sourdough in its labeled paper bag. By this time, my supervisor is back and standing next to me.

Me: Alright here you go! Here is the plastic bag as well for you to use later if you like.

Karen: (Sneering at the lovely fresh loaf of bread) I think there’s just going to be no cost for this.

Clearly she is trying to imply that the loaf should be free as restitution for her imagined troubles.

Me: Oh, the price is 6 dollars.. Karen sighs with disgust, holding the bread like a dirty diaper. My supervisor comes to my aid.

Supervisor: Yes ma’am, for your convenience the bar code is right there on the bag. You scan that at checkout.

Karen sneers again and saunters away without a thank you.. Interesting that she was in such a huge rush, but still had time to stop for gelato. 😂

Few things make a new job more stressful than meeting someone who treats an ordinary mistake as an opportunity to demand compensation.

The bakery worker was only on her second day, yet she remained polite, admitted what she did not know, and repeatedly offered ways to fix the bread. What began as using the wrong-sized bag somehow ended with the customer suggesting that a perfectly good $6 loaf should cost half price—or nothing at all.

The employee’s frustration is understandable because the problem was minor and reversible. The bread had been sliced correctly; it simply did not sit neatly in the oversized plastic bag.

Rather than accepting another bag or waiting briefly for the supervisor, the customer repeatedly emphasized that she was “in a hurry,” despite that urgency being self-created. Her impatience effectively became something the employee was expected to solve.

There is also a more interesting psychological angle here. The customer may not necessarily be an unusually terrible person. Situational frustration can make ordinary people temporarily feel that inconvenience deserves restitution. What crosses the line is turning disappointment into an assumption of special treatment.

The increasingly ambitious requests—from half price to apparently free—suggest that the inconvenience itself had become bargaining power.

Psychotherapist F. Diane Barth, LCSW, explains that entitlement is not inherently unhealthy; people reasonably expect fairness and decent treatment.

Problems emerge when someone begins assuming they deserve preferential treatment over others simply because they want it. In that mindset, another person’s needs, limitations, or circumstances can fade into the background.

Research on customer incivility makes the employee’s experience worth taking seriously too.

Psychologist Michael Sliter, Ph.D., told the American Psychological Association that seemingly minor customer rudeness—such as questioning competence or withholding basic courtesy—can significantly affect service workers. His research found that incivility from customers had an even greater impact on employee well-being than similar behavior from coworkers.

That fits this encounter particularly well. The employee was learning a new task and openly trying to correct a small mistake, yet the customer responded as though inexperience itself deserved punishment. Fortunately, the supervisor modeled the healthier response: calmly reinforce the actual price instead of rewarding unreasonable pressure.

The practical lesson is simple. Businesses should fix genuine mistakes, but good customer service does not require turning every inconvenience into free merchandise. For new employees especially, supportive supervisors can make the difference between learning from an error and feeling humiliated by it.

And perhaps the funniest detail remains the gelato. For someone facing such an urgent bread emergency, she somehow found time for dessert.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These Redditors shared how some customers will invent or hunt for complaints no matter what staff do

Tight_Steak_232 − I can't tell you how many times I've had customers (when I was a waitress) attempt to insist they deserved a discount.

One of my customers insisted my chef left a bunch of hair in her food and she couldn't eat it (most of it was gone when she "found" the hair).

I told her I was going to mention it to the chef.

He was furious, so he came out to the table. He was big. Burly. No nonsense. He was also very bald. "If I left hair in your food, I want...

She muttered in embarrassment, suggesting some of the other staff must have left it there. "I work alone."

My hair was in braids and a totally different color than the curly hairs she had in her food. ..which happened to be the same color as her own.

LoveSuccs86 − People like that will pick you apart no matter how good a job you do, she would have found something to complain about either way.

These commenters criticized rude customers who expect service without basic gratitude or respect

Wakemeup3000 − They always walk away without a thank you. Thanking anyone for doing anything just isn't in their DNA.

atchisonmetal − I myself tend to prioritize gelato, ngl. But I do not say rude or demeaning things to our bakery service people. Ever. 💐

These users questioned the customer’s story and suspected parts of her behavior didn’t add up

Brilliant_Contest273 − Interesting that she “always gets a 12” but had to ask where the sourdough was

NYC-WhWmn-ov50 − Is anyone else wondering if she actually paid for the gelato?

These Redditors blamed management for leaving an employee untrained and unsupported

No_Abroad2090 − I actually believe the management is at fault.

They gave you no training for the bread slicer and they've let you to figure it out on your own? Wtf.

Life_Temperature2506 − That's not an entitled Karen. That's a poorly trained employee left alone to flounder.

These commenters responded with sarcastic jokes about the unpleasant customer getting some consequences.

delulu4drama − Hope that gelato goes right to her thighs 🙄

Crazy-Rat_Lady − Shame her car wasn’t nicked.

So who deserves more criticism here: the customer who tried to turn messy packaging into free bread, or management for leaving its newest employee to figure everything out? Share the verdict below.
