She Went From Thrift Stores To Luxury Brands, And Their Marriage Started Falling Apart

in Social Issues

Sometimes success changes a person. Other times, it reveals a side of them that was always waiting to come out.

One husband never expected the woman he had loved since his teenage years to become someone he barely recognized. They met when they were young, built a life together, and survived some of the hardest moments side by side.

She was once the person who valued simple things, ignored status, and cared more about people than possessions. But after accepting a powerful executive position with a life-changing salary, everything seemed different.

The clothes, the cars, the lifestyle, and even the way she treated him began to change. Now, standing on the edge of divorce, he is left wondering whether fame and success transformed his wife or simply pulled away the person he thought he knew.

A husband watches his once humble wife transform after fame and success, leaving him questioning the person she became

not the actual photo

'My wife is not the woman I used to know. She let the fame get to her'

I know I won't probably get anything meaningful from reddit, but at this stage of life I don't have a single soul to talk to.

I met my wife when I was 15 in high school, she was 17. That latter part of my teenage years was probably the hardest of my life,

since in half a year I lost my mother. Never knew my dad so she was the only thing I could consider "family".

At that time, me and my wife were only friends, but she was there for me, and grieved with me.

I think I started developing feelings for her during that time.. We started dating when I was 17, and we got married 7 years later.

For context, my wife was very frugal and unmaterialstic. She never cared about clothes, makeup, brands, cars, ect..

Always spending money on thrift shops or during sales on whatever she liked.

I remember trying to impress her with my 370z just for her to react with "what car is this? A Corolla?" So yeah. I think you get the type.

But that's what I liked about her the most. And also, she was the most caring person I ever knew.

In our family, she's the successful one, always working in big corporations.

Regarding myself, I always worked as a community first responder for my local hospital. The salary wasn't high, but I loved my job, helping people as I could.

Fast forward, two years ago she received an offer from an important company for an executive position, offering four (yes, four)

times her salary (and let me tell you, her salary wasn't bad by any means). But we should've to move to a different city.

At first, I was doubtful, since that would've mean losing my job and not be sure if I could have contributed financially to our family for an indefinite time period,

but she said that she could have sustained the family effortlessly with this new job,

and for that time I could have looked after the house and groceries, till I could've found a new job.

Since she was so enthusiastic, I accepted. I was happy to support my wife's carrier.

Well, the best way I can put it is that my wife underwent a crazy trasformation. Some Dr Jekyll and Mr Hide type thing, if you know what I mean.

She started caring more and more about luxury brands, jewels, cars, etc.

I don't think you can quite imagine my disbelief seeing her coming back home with a Versace bag after seeing her for years wearing 10$ coats from our local trift...

She also started hanging out with her new female coworkers a lot.

My wife isn't very extroverted or very social, so that was quite the shock, but I was very very happy for her.

I thought that she finally found her dimension after years of struggling.

But that happiness started fading after she started coming way later and home every day. And later. And later.

Until it was a miracle to be able to talk to her for 10 minutes a day. I thought it was very busy with work (since well being an executive...

till she started posting lots of photos of her with her coworkers drinking, going shopping and stuff.

The fun part is, she never finds time to reply to my text, but she always has a minute to post photos. And when she replies, she says that she's...

She also literally stopped saying things to me altogheter.

Have you ever experienced your wife/husband going to work with an Audi A3 and then coming back home with a Porsche Macan GTS?

Well, I did, and let me tell you. It's no fun. I confronted her on if it was a business issued car, which it isn't, then on why she spent...

on a car when she didn't care not even a little about cars. Her passive aggressive response was that it's her money and that she entitled to do as she...

Or have you experienced not seeing your wife/husband coming back home for a night and not replying to text just to receive a call

the following afternoon saying that she forgot telling me that she left for a business trip? Well. I hope you haven't.

But the worse is when she invited me for lunch with her coworkers.

I was very happy because that was the first time we were doing something together in months,

and I thought that what I've experienced before what only a phase and that it was all ended.

My wife left first because she had work to do, so I dressed up nicely and left two hours after to the scheduled restaurant.

For context, I sold years before my 370z because I didn't need a sportscar no more, so my daily driver is a very frugal Renault Clio.

I like it, and since I don't need that much, I don't have reasons to upgrade to a pricer model or brand.

Well, I get to the restaurant, park my car in front of it, get inside just to see my wife staring at me like horror stricken.

She gets up from the table and takes me outside of the restaurant, then proceed to literally insult me for parking my Clio

in front of the restaurant and in front of her table, saying that I embarrassed her and that I should've parked it somewhere hidden.

I was completely at a loss for words. I asked her why, and she said that it was a cheap, non luxury car, not representative of her lifestyle.

She then gets back inside the restaurant, warning me not to embarass her like this again. I attended the rest of the lunch in shock.

That day I realized that that girl I had at my side wasn't my wife. It wasn't the girl I married anymore.

My wife is now out of the house, celebrating a great year for the company, and I'm here at home writing this with the divorce papers in front of me.

I don't think I can handle this situation anymore.

I tried lots and lots of time to talk to her, to tell her how I feel, to tell her that she changed, that she's not the same woman I...

But she just doesn't listen. She always says that she has no time and that she needs to work,

or she tries to minimize the situation saying that it's not true and that she never changed.

She wanted kids, now she doesn't want them anymore, saying that they would rob her time from her carreer.

She wanted to travel, now she doesn't want to do it, for the same reason. Is she really the same woman I married?

But still, I can't bring myself to talk about divorce with her.

Most likely because I hope that somewhere hidden inside of her there's still the woman I loved and still love. Even if this doesn't seems like the case.

One of the most painful experiences in a relationship is not always losing someone physically. Sometimes it is watching someone you love slowly become unfamiliar while they are still standing right in front of you.

For this husband, the heartbreak is not simply that his wife became successful. He supported her success and wanted her to thrive. The pain comes from feeling that the person who once valued their shared life now seems disconnected from the very things that once made their relationship meaningful.

Their story is complicated because change itself is not the enemy. People naturally evolve when they enter new environments, gain confidence, or experience new opportunities. The wife’s career achievement, higher income, and new social circles are not automatically negative.

The emotional wound appears to come from how those changes affected their connection. The husband describes fewer conversations, forgotten plans, unexplained absences, and a moment where he felt judged rather than loved.

A different perspective is that major life transitions can reshape how people see themselves. Entering an executive role after years of focusing on stability may have introduced her to a world where status, appearance, and professional identity carry new importance. Sometimes people adapt to a new environment by embracing its values.

The problem is not necessarily enjoying luxury or ambition. The problem occurs when a person’s new identity leaves no room for the relationships and values that existed before.

Relationship researcher Dr. John Gottman, co-founder of The Gottman Institute, explains that successful long-term relationships depend heavily on maintaining friendship, emotional connection, and mutual respect.

He emphasizes that couples need to continue turning toward each other through everyday moments because emotional distance often develops gradually when partners stop responding to each other’s needs and experiences.

That perspective highlights the deeper issue in this marriage. The conflict is not really about a Porsche, a designer bag, or a Renault Clio. Those objects became symbols. For him, the car incident represented feeling ashamed by the person who once loved him without caring about appearances.

For her, the new lifestyle may represent achievement, belonging, or a hard-earned transformation. Both meanings can exist, but a marriage struggles when one partner’s transformation makes the other feel invisible.

The husband’s hesitation about divorce also reflects a common form of grief. He is not only grieving the current relationship; he is grieving the version of the future they once imagined. The memories of who she was are still real, which makes accepting the present much harder.

The difficult question is not whether she changed. Everyone changes. The question is whether the two people who changed can still recognize, respect, and choose each other. Love can survive different careers, incomes, and lifestyles, but it cannot survive indefinitely when one person feels like they are no longer valued.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These commenters supported OP’s decision to move forward, saying he deserves respect, happiness, and a partner who values him

[Reddit User] − Just wanna say I’m sorry man. I can only imagine how painful it is to watch someone you love slowly change into someone completely different.

She’s made it perfectly clear you aren’t a priority, you aren’t even someone she respects. Money blinds some folks. You’re making the right choice.

You deserve to be with someone who loves and cares for you, and who wants to build a life with you. This woman does none of those things anymore.

jfliu511 − I’m sorry you are going through this, but you grew apart and it happens sometimes. Be brave and do the best for yourself! You deserve to be happy...

hutchwo − Just ask her if she plans to continue this way to live. If yes, then you should leave.

It’s not making you happy and there’s no reason to continue living unhappy.

It’s gonna suck and you’ll be sad but you’ll eventually be happy again and find someone that you will be happy with.

It sounds like the person you fell in love with is gone…which is sad and I’m sorry.

You can probably get some money in the divorce, I would let go as far as getting an amount that would ruin her…

but enough to make up for you quitting your job and relocating.

Do not follow her socials either, she’s going to post a bunch of her lavish lifestyle.

No need to be hateful or mad at her moving forward, she became someone you no longer are in love with and it’s ok for you to move on.

She clearly isn’t respecting you as a partner so it is okay to move on.

Thank her for the time yous did make each other happy and find a new path. Good luck…would love updates.

DaisyInc − This is what she wants, she has no desire to change back.

If you, your lifestyle, and your personality already embarrass her and she thinks you're beneath her. ..

she'll start looking for an equally materialistic and pompous man who matches her new identity if she hasn't already.

Do what thousands and thousands of people have done to reclaim their happiness.

Divorce your toxic spouse and get your sweet cut of alimony out of her fat salary.

There is someone else out there for you who is kind, respectful, appreciates who you are, and yes. .. hot too.

These Redditors requested updates and encouraged OP to prioritize his future after making a difficult relationship decision

MemeDealer2999 − Please do an update after the situation, I would live to see where this goes.

Cathene70 − Go through with the divorce and return to your town that you felt the love from the townspeople, and move on with your life.

She clearly doesn't want you in her life. But before you hand her the papers, hire a PI to find out if she's cheating or not.

If she is, well, you can change the divorce papers to include compensation

from her and the man she's cheating with to whatever price you want to get out of it and then live the life you are more relaxed in.

I think those late nights and those sudden business trips are her cheating on you.

You deserve a woman who loves you and won't tell you not to park your old beat up car in front of the restaurant as you're embarrassing me,

I would have stated my husband loves his old car and I've tried to get him to sell it and get a new one,

but he loves the old thing to my friends and state I have to look classy but at home, we're down to earth wearing jeans and tshirts.

She will end up the loser in this as she will lose a good man who loves her but she's chasing him away.

This group reacted strongly to the wife’s rejection of OP’s lifestyle and criticized her focus on status and appearances’

gerbileleventh − This was all very upsetting to read but when she shat on the Clio, I took it personally.

(RIP to my favourite car ever, Renault Clio Be Bop edition, 1994 - 2021)

Sergeant_Metalhead − I would have left the restaurant as soon as said I was an embarrassment.

These commenters offered a more balanced perspective, suggesting reflection, communication, and focusing on deeper relationship issues beyond money

cassowary32 − Have you talked to a therapist? You need to start building a life you want and in time it will be clear if staying married

to her adds to your life. Are you working? Do you have your own circle of friends? Are there any hobbies you are interested in?

You've mentioned your frugality but not anything else that brought joy into your lives.

Did you enjoy cooking? Traveling? Seeing movies? Shows? Charity work? Do you still want kids?

sthetic − If you want to try working it out (and I know you already have tried talking to her). .. Don't just focus on the money and spending.

Buying a $1,000 purse is not a personality any more than buying a $10 purse is.

If you go into the conversation crying about how she used to be so frugal and down-to-earth in her thrift store clothes,

and now she's this intimidating diva in her designer outfits, it won't be a good start.

So she's earning money and doing expensive s__t with her coworkers. Sounds like she can afford it.

Remember, she went from 0-60. The fact that she always was so frugal and humble means that this new environment of money and

luxury is like a sugar high for her. She wasn't prepared at all for it. She's kind of overdosing right now like a kid in a candy store.

She doesn't have the experience of living a mid-range lifestyle to give her a sense of where to draw the line.

There's nothing villainous about wearing more expensive clothes and driving more expensive cars to fit in with your coworkers at your job.

Obviously she was not going to attend business lunches with her $30 shoes.

Keeping up with the Joneses is an unspoken job requirement in some environments.

THAT BEING SAID, she is treating you terribly in ways that have nothing to do with spending money.

Working late without communication, going on sudden business trips, yelling at you. .. all those are BAD. Focus on those things.

Don't make it all about, "oh no, you're wearing a designer coat and I can't relate to you anymore! What happened to the humble little woman I used to love?...

Underneath all her flashy b__lshit is a scared teenager worried people will make fun of her for her clothes. Or maybe that's unfair to her.

Maybe she's a successful, confident career woman finally allowing herself to enjoy the results of her hard work.

None of that is an excuse for how she's treating you.

By all means, stand up for yourself. Divorce if you want. But focus on her treatment of you, not on her clothes.

What do you think?
