Woman Exposes Double Standards After Boss Criticizes Her Clothes but Ignores Other Teachers

Standing up for yourself at work can be difficult, especially when the person making you uncomfortable is someone with authority over you.

The challenge becomes even bigger when the criticism starts feeling personal instead of professional.

OP had always been careful about dressing appropriately for her job, but she noticed that her supervisor repeatedly focused on her appearance while ignoring similar outfits worn by coworkers.

After one public confrontation during a school event, OP decided she had enough and challenged the way the dress code was being applied.

Scroll down to find out what happened after OP spoke up and whether her actions affected her future at the workplace.

A preschool teacher faces dress code complaints that seem focused on her body

'AITA for telling my boss she needs to follow the dress code policy after criticizing my clothes?'

I (25F, Latina) used to work at a preschool where most of the teachers/admin were white. I’m

including this because I feel it plays into how I was treated.

For context: I’ve always been insecure about my body. As a kid, I was bullied constantly for

being “fat.” As I got older, I thinned out, but my body shape never changed. I’ve always had

wide hips, thick thighs, and a big behind; even since I was a child. It’s just how I’m built. Some

coworkers have described me as “voluptuous” since I workout a lot and have a small waits

with a large bottom. I don’t own baggy clothes because they make me look much larger with

my wide hips, and that just brings back the insecurities from when I was younger. So, when

people make comments on how my body looks, it hits a nerve.

At this job, we wore uniform shirts with work pants. My uniform fit me well and I never had

any issues with dress code violations while working in the classroom. Since I am a bit insecure

about my body, I don’t usually wear or own clothes that is super revealing anyways. I also

know how to dress, and am aware of professional workplace clothing, even for teacher

training days.. My assistant director always seemed to target me over what I wore on teacher training days.

For example, I was told leggings with a large sweater were “inappropriate”. Another time, I

wore jeans and a fitted shirt with a high neckline (not revealing at all), and she said it was

inappropriate because it looked like I was wearing skims and it was “too tight”. The last

incident before this one, I was reprimanded for wearing a mid length pencil skirt with a

blouse, the pencil skirt was too short even though it was to my knees. I hate mini or short

skirts since I know they can ride up. Meanwhile, other teachers show up in shorts, crop tops,

leggings, fitted dresses or skirts, and whatever else with no issues. I know this because I had

asked other teachers after seeing what they wear to training days if they ever get in trouble for it.

The final straw was when I wore a long a__le length fitted sweater dress (not bodycon, just

something that followed my shape). My boss kept staring at me and even made a comment

about how the dress looked. I brushed it off, but over a week later, during a student’s

birthday party, with parents there of all times, she pulled me aside and said what I wore was

“offensive to her and other staff” She told me I needed to start wearing or buying less fitted

clothes for training days or just wear my uniform.

I snapped. Already stressed from the party, I told her this was workplace discrimination

against me because of my body. I had spoke to other staff who wear the same kind of

clothing (all different body types than mine), and none of them have ever been reprimanded

for it. If I had a different shape, she wouldn’t care what I wore, and unless she was going to

send out a mass email telling everyone they had to wear less fitted clothes or uniform to

training days, I was going to wear whatever I wanted. I also told her that if we’re going to be

doing a tit for tat on who follows the handbook, then she needs to stop wearing mini skirts

and kitten heels since this is supposed to be a professional workplace and she looks like she’s

going out for drinks. All of which was true. She stormed off and went to the director.

The director never spoke to me on the situation, but at the end of that day I pulled up our

school handbook and emailed all admin. I copied and pasted the section that clearly stated

“all staff, including administration, has to wear uniforms during work hours so we will all look like a team”.

No one responded to my email, but a few months later when doing our beginning of school

year teacher training day, the handbook was conveniently changed in a few areas, the one

that stood out most to me was “admin can wear business casual while teachers have to wear

uniforms to remain professionalism in the classrooms”. Nothing about teacher training days,

and they never said anything about it to me for the remainder of the time I was there. Before

I left, a new girl who was also Latina with a similar body type to mine had just started and I

noticed the assistant director getting on her for not buying the appropriate workplace pants

(while some teachers get away with wearing leggings to work every single day).

Recently, one of my old coworkers (now admin) told me they once considered me for a

admin position myself (not that I’d ever want it) but weren’t sure if they’d consider me

because of the “unprofessional” incident with the assistant director. I no longer work at that

school and am in a much better place but I can’t help but wonder if AITA for standing up for

myself and pointing out my boss wasn’t following the dress code, or did I go too far?

Many people know the feeling of being judged before they are even given a chance to explain themselves.

Appearance is one of the quickest ways people form opinions, and when someone has spent years feeling criticized for their body, repeated comments about how they look can feel much deeper than a simple workplace disagreement.

In this situation, OP was not just reacting to a dress code conversation. She was responding to a pattern that made her feel singled out.

She had experienced repeated criticism over clothing that, according to her, was acceptable on other employees.

The emotional weight came from the inconsistency: it was not simply “follow the rules,” but “follow rules that seem to apply differently depending on who is wearing the clothes.”

For someone who already carried insecurity about her body, being told her appearance was “offensive” likely felt personal rather than professional.

A different perspective is that workplace dress codes can sometimes be complicated.

Managers are allowed to have expectations around professionalism, especially in environments involving children and parents.

However, those expectations need to be clear, consistent, and applied equally.

The concern becomes less about whether fitted clothing is appropriate and more about whether one employee was being judged because of her body shape rather than the actual clothing itself.

This perspective helps explain why OP’s reaction was so emotional.

If the assistant director had sent a general reminder that all employees needed to avoid certain styles during training days, the situation may have felt very different.

Instead, OP perceived a repeated focus on her body and clothing while other employees were allowed similar choices.

Whether intentional or not, that type of uneven enforcement can create a sense of being targeted.

At the same time, the way OP responded is worth examining.

Calling out the assistant director’s own clothing choices may have felt satisfying after months of frustration, but it shifted the conversation from workplace standards to personal criticism.

A stronger response could have focused entirely on the inconsistency: asking for written guidelines, requesting equal enforcement, and documenting examples of different treatment.

Standing up for yourself does not mean every reaction will be perfect. Sometimes people reach a breaking point after feeling ignored for too long.

The bigger issue is whether workplaces create environments where concerns can be raised before employees feel forced to defend themselves in the middle of a conflict.

OP’s experience highlights the importance of fair policies, consistent leadership, and remembering that professionalism should be measured by actions and performance, not by whether someone’s body fits a particular expectation.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These commenters gave straightforward support

Quirky_Pop_3321 − Nope. Not even a little

Lucky-Guess8786 − NTA at all. Remind yourself that "that was then and this is now". Live your

current life and not that of the past.

Careless-Ability-748 − nta good for you

This group interpreted the situation as possible jealousy or bias toward OP’s body type

sauronsballsgargler − NTA. Nope. Never. That assistant director was probably targeting you

out of jealousy that you looked better than her (but that's just my opinion) - why else would

she specifically target you to wear clothes that weren't suited/fit to your body shape? She

wanted you frumpy, not professional. I'm sorry you had to deal with it.

dancergirl14396 − I am sorry but what coworker feels comfortable enough to call someone

voluptuous? ? That is weird. Obviously NTA, she is jealous that you are gorgeous no matter

what you wear. I would have filled an harassment claim with HR. I am glad you are no longer there!

Key-Extension3390 − This happens all the time unfortunately. Women with long backs often

take an issue with women who are shapely despite them being appropriately and

professionally clothed. We aren't the problem, men who can't control their gaze/comments

and the women who that makes insecure are. I'm sorry this happened to you.

These commenters focused on the practical side: documenting incidents

FlamingoSundries − I learned to document comments. I had a book I carried in my purse with

entries like "2/15/25 2:30pm, Mr X said "your \_\_\_\_looks fine in that outfit. " 2:40 Mr X said

"I would pay to see you out of that outfit. " And so on. Makes your complaints to whoever

more concrete, rather than saying he made suggestive remarks.

So if someone comments on your clothing or anything else that is not pertinent to your job

performance, keep records!

ritlingit − You should have taken pictures of your “unacceptable” dress and the other

teachers’ outfits as well as the leggings in bf’s some teachers get away with. You could have

passed that information to the other Latina woman for her use.

Jesiplayssims − You were correct for standing up for yourself, but you could have handled it

differently, documentation of discrimination, HR, and boss's boss, etc. You were the whole to

those who followed in your position

These comments raised concerns about workplace discrimination

Kisabeth − NTA. As a latin woman who is also very voluptuous, I can understand how certain

clothes fit my body and hug my curves even if the clothes are not tight or form fitting. She

was outright targeting you if other dress code violators were never called out. Good on you

for standing up for yourself and glad you don’t work there anymore.

The fact that they went and changed the dress code for admin only after your email speaks

volumes about their work culture.

Own_Championship4180 − Nope. I will call it what it looks like. Racism.

From what you described you and then another Latina were singled out then you were

denied a promotion (regardless if you wanted it or not) over a white woman upset over a

dress code that she herself wasn’t following, HR didn’t talk to you or respond to your email,

and others weren’t held to the same unreasonable standards.

I hope more people tell her and management off. What you did took courage. Many people

don’t stand up to workplace harassment, but you did. That is pretty freaking awesome.

queenleilanightcourt − HR professional here. This seems like workplace discrimination. I don’t

fault you for your actions. While I think some people in the profession would say you could’ve

said that a lot nicer, I’m not sure if they would have gotten the point. Some people are

exceptionally dense like that.

Wish you all the best in your current job, and I hope you don’t encounter this in the workplace again.

OP’s situation was never just about a dress code, it was about whether the rules were being applied fairly.

She felt repeatedly singled out because of her body type while others were allowed similar clothing without consequences.

Speaking up may have created tension, but staying silent could have meant accepting treatment she believed was unfair.

Some may argue that calling out her supervisor’s own clothing choices was too personal, while others see it as defending herself against hypocrisy.

Do you think OP crossed a line, or was she right to finally stand up for herself? Share your thoughts below!
