Neighbor Assumes She Can Use Another Woman’s Yard For Three Weeks Without Asking

Having a good relationship with your neighbors can make life much easier, but there are limits to how much of your property you should be expected to share. A temporary favor can also become frustrating when someone starts treating your space as if it belongs to them.

The original poster (OP) has an open side yard that their neighbor has previously been allowed to use for access. However, after earlier incidents caused significant damage to OP’s property, that arrangement was stopped.

Now the neighbor needs plumbing work and has apparently decided to use OP’s driveway, lawn, and side yard again for several weeks instead of dealing with the overgrown area on her own property. Read on to see how OP confronted the situation and what happened next.

A homeowner confronts a neighbor who expects to use their property for weeks to access her own home

'Neighbour using my property because they are too lazy to take care of their own'

This rant could be the first in what could be many many posts about this neighbour.

My back yard is fenced in a way that I have a side yard that is fully open. My fence starts near the back of my house.

My neighbour has a small section of property between her house and my fence as is normal. I take care of that little strip because she doesn’t.

Her back yard is currently chest high with weeds.

She also let her front hedge become so overgrown that it has blocked her access to that strip from the front too.

This neighbour now needs to have plumbing work done on her house. Her water goes into her house on the side that faces my house.

Last night, I looked up to see her walking up my driveway with someone.

They then crossed into my side yard, and walked along my sidewalk to my fence, where they walked across my lawn towards her house.

They went to where the water goes into her house. I didn’t say anything in the moment because she only did it once (so I thought it was going to...

Rather than clean up her own yard, and allow access through her own property, I heard her telling the guy that she was hiring to park at my house,

use my driveway and property, and just completely use my property to access hers.

When I confronted her, she said that the work was “only” expected to last about three weeks.

We used to let this woman use our property to access hers, but had to stop it when she was actually causing damage to our property.

We let it go the first time, because her damage didn’t bar access for me, but the second time,

it took three months for me to be able to use our back yard again (I have a physical disability, so need even ground to be able to walk).

We are still dealing with that five years later, because we had to rip our most of our grass in order to level the ground again.

Since we have dogs, it is MUCH harder to grow new grass than it is to maintain an already established lawn,

so we still have several bare spots where the dogs like to play the most.

A home is more than a building. The land around it represents privacy, security, effort, and control over a space someone is responsible for maintaining. That is why repeated use of another person’s property can become deeply frustrating, especially when the person asking for access has already demonstrated that their actions can cause damage.

That seems to be the emotional core of this situation. The OP had previously allowed her neighbor to cross her property because the neighbor’s own narrow side yard was neglected and difficult to access.

What began as a favor eventually created a much bigger problem when the neighbor’s activities damaged the OP’s yard and left parts of it unusable for months. Because OP has a physical disability and needs level ground to move safely, the consequences were not merely cosmetic.

Now the neighbor needs plumbing work and has apparently decided that OP’s driveway and side yard can serve as an access route for the contractor. The particularly frustrating part is that OP was not asked first. She discovered the plan after seeing the neighbor walking across her property and overhearing instructions about where the contractor could park.

A different perspective is that the neighbor may view the arrangement as practical rather than invasive. Her own overgrown yard has made access difficult, while OP’s property provides a convenient route.

From her perspective, using an existing path for three weeks may seem like a minor inconvenience. But convenience does not automatically create permission, particularly when a previous arrangement resulted in documented damage.

Psychologist and social worker Karen Salerno explains that healthy boundaries are about clearly communicating what someone is comfortable allowing and what they are not. She notes that boundaries protect a person’s time, energy, physical space, and well-being, and that consistently enforcing them helps other people understand what is acceptable.

That principle applies surprisingly well here. OP is not required to prove that her neighbor is lazy or malicious before saying no. The relevant issue is simpler: she owns and maintains her property, has previously experienced damage, and does not want contractors using it for an extended period.

There is also an important distinction between a boundary and a punishment. Saying, “You cannot use my driveway or yard without my permission” establishes a limit. It does not require OP to criticize the neighbor’s gardening, force her to repair anything, or retaliate against her.

Given the history, documenting the previous damage and communicating clearly in writing could be useful. If access is genuinely necessary for the plumbing work, the neighbor can explore whether there is another route or obtain whatever formal permission or access arrangement applies locally.

The larger lesson is that generosity can become complicated when people stop treating it as generosity and start treating it as an entitlement. A favor offered once does not automatically become permanent access.

Being a good neighbor does not mean surrendering control over one’s property. Sometimes the most peaceful relationship is the one where everyone knows exactly where the property line—and the personal boundary—begins.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These Redditors suggested fencing the property to stop the neighbor’s access

rpaul9578 − Fence off your property.

Witty_Candle_3448 − You can put up a temporary fence with tall garden stakes and bright orange or green mesh. Home Depot sells it at a very reasonable price.

IZC0MMAND0 − I hope you told her that they absolutely cannot use your driveway or property to access her yard

and that she needs to get her yard cleaned up and they can access her property through her yard only.

Then get the rest of your property fenced and gated. Block her access to your property.

Make sure you tell whoever is doing this work that they are absolutely not allowed to trespass on your property.

Get a sign or 5 and post them all over. No trespassing, private property. Violators will be towed.

Big-Youth-7918 − Just say no, and if you can, put up a temporary fence. I hope you already have cameras up; if not install asap.

Unfortunately, because you were nice before you are now expected to comply.

Correct this now and be firm. Good Luck and make sure your cameras record 24/7.

These users urged telling the plumber clearly that the property is off-limits

derpplerp − Warn the plumber that you are quick to call a tow.

PartyCat78 − Tell her absolutely not. And tell the company that they do not have your permission to utilize your property at all.

A reputable company would never use your property without gaining permission from the property owner.

But it sounds like they *could* if she maintained her property. That is not a valid reason.

She needs to clear the way or hire someone to clear the way to her plumbing access.

Wishiwasinalaska − Just let the plumber know he can’t use your property, that she does s__t like this all the time. They will understand.

Ok_Future6486 − A day or maybe 2 is one thing but THREE WEEKS! ?!?! WTH? Hard NO

These commenters recommended reporting the neglected, overgrown yard to local authorities.

PixieStyx8 − Report her to the city. Sounds like she's gonna get fined for not maintaining her lawn

markdmac − Call your town, report her over grown yard. They will send her a notice to clean it up.

Should neighbors generally accommodate temporary access for necessary repairs, or does previous damage change the equation? How would you handle a neighbor who made plans for your property before asking permission? Share your thoughts below!
