Woman Refuses To Share Her Emergency Powerbank After Family Ignores Her Warnings

Sometimes, family disagreements are not really about the item itself, but about preparation, responsibility, and whether someone should be expected to fix another person’s lack of planning. Small emergencies can quickly reveal very different attitudes between people.

The original poster (OP) had prepared for power outages by buying a high-capacity power bank and encouraging their family to do the same.

When a major storm caused a long blackout, OP shared an older charger with their family but refused to hand over their newer one after seeing how quickly they used the first one. Read on to see whether OP was being selfish or simply protecting something they planned ahead for.

not the actual photo

'AITA for not sharing my powerbank?'

I bought a big 20,000mAh powerbank. Nothing crazy, but enough for a few phone charges, good for when the power goes out or whatever.

I got this new one recently since my 10,000mAh is a few years old and has a lower capacity than when I bought it just due to use and going...

When I got it, I was telling my family they should get some too since it was a good deal for a good brand.

That it would be good to have as we've been having a lot of big storms and more tornado warnings.

I basically get eye rolls and comments about how the power almost never goes out.

Well, we got a crazy bad storm, and the power ended up being out for almost 24 hours.

Obviously not great, but we can flush the toilets, we have flashlights, we'll be fine waiting it out. Or I would be anyway, because I could use my phone.

Well, an hour into the power being out, my sister is already complaining about her phone being low battery...

as she's been glued to it basically constantly since the power went out. I feel pretty covered with my powerbank, and so I give them my old one.

After a few more hours, they've somehow managed to drain the whole thing and their batteries are getting medium low again.

I gave them some s__t this time like, guys, you need to conserve your batteries.

My sister immediately shoots back about "I don't see you conserving battery power",

and I told her that's because I actually prepared, and that I already gave them my one bank and they're on their own after that.

She wanted to plug her phone into my new bank too, since there were 2 slots to charge with.

Immediately I'm like hell nah, you will drain this s__t so fast. She obviously got mad and called me selfish.

My mom was making minor comments like "just let her use it for a bit".

I basically told her that her lack of self control shouldn't be costing me my ability to use my phone, when both powerbanks are literally mine.

She even has one herself, she just never bothers charging it until right before she needs it, which in this case made it useless.

I think I'm in the right, but I guess I'm also doubting myself too, was I being too petty?

I mean, I just don't see a world where I'm unreasonable for this, considering they all have enough disposable income to spend on powerbanks too,

they just didn't care to (before this anyways, my sister later ordered one). She still thinks I was being an AH about it. What do you guys think?

Partly so I can show her the post if you're on my side, or keep it to myself and rethink life if you're not.

Preparedness often looks unnecessary until the exact moment it becomes valuable. People who plan ahead can sometimes feel frustrated when others dismiss their warnings, only to rely on them when a problem finally happens.

That is the emotional tension in this story. The OP bought a high-capacity powerbank after encouraging his family to do the same because of increasing storms and power outage risks.

His advice was ignored, with family members believing an outage was unlikely. When a severe storm eventually caused a 24-hour blackout, the difference between preparation and assumption became obvious.

At first, OP shared his older powerbank with his family. However, after they used it up quickly while continuing to use their phones normally, he refused to give access to his newer backup battery. His family viewed this as selfish, while he saw it as protecting the emergency resource he had intentionally purchased and maintained.

The conflict is not really about a charger. It is about responsibility. His family experienced his refusal as a lack of generosity, while OP experienced their request as expecting him to absorb the consequences of choices they had made themselves.

A different perspective is that emergencies can bring out different ideas about sharing. Some people believe that resources should be pooled during difficult situations, especially within families.

Others believe that preparation creates a responsibility to protect limited supplies so they remain available if the situation becomes worse. Both perspectives come from different ideas about fairness.

Psychologist and author Brené Brown has written about the importance of boundaries in relationships, explaining that healthy boundaries are not about punishment or rejection but about clearly communicating what someone can and cannot offer. She describes boundaries as a way to maintain connection while still respecting personal limits.

This idea helps explain why OP’s decision does not necessarily represent selfishness. He did not refuse all help. He already shared one powerbank, warned his family beforehand, and explained why he needed to preserve the remaining battery.

His frustration came from feeling that his preparation was being treated as a community resource only after others chose not to prepare.

At the same time, the situation also shows why communication before a crisis matters. During stressful events, people are less likely to calmly negotiate expectations. A family discussion about emergency supplies, backup plans, and shared resources before a storm would likely have prevented the conflict.

The larger lesson is that preparedness is not just about owning supplies. It is also about understanding the difference between generosity and obligation. Helping others during an emergency can be an act of kindness, but it does not mean someone must give away everything they prepared for their own safety.

A powerbank may seem like a small object, but the disagreement represents a much bigger question: when people ignore advice and a problem eventually happens, who should carry the responsibility for fixing it?

The answer often depends on whether support is being offered freely—or expected automatically.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These Redditors supported the OP, saying others’ poor preparation was not their responsibility

TSMWiz − Have you not heard the story of the three little pigs? You built your house out of (power)brick and were ready when the wolf showed up.

Not your fault your family ignored your advice. NTA.

tomhermans − For people to learn, they first need to FAFO. NTA. You were educating 😁

These commenters suggested practical outage solutions like radios, cars, books, and charged power banks

Imaginary-Angle-42 − NTA. She can read a book, play solitaire with real cards, or do a puzzle.

There are emergency weather radios that have a crank so you can charge devices with.

I’ve not found them to charge very quickly and turning the crank gets old quickly but it’s an idea.

BevoFan1936 − NTA Do they have cars? I was without power for five days during a rare snowstorm. I sat in my car for heat and to charge my phone.

Mysterious-Cat33 − My brother is one who is really good at keeping multiple power banks charged.

I have 2 now that are relatively new so I’m better at keeping them charged.

Before I couldn’t keep my 2 -10 plus year old power banks charged because they just drained on their own after a week.

When I was visiting my parents (where my brother still lives) they had a power outage and my brother loaned us ONE power bank each.

I wouldn’t have dreamed of asking for someone else’s though my mom let me use hers

after we used mine to power an iPad we watched a movie on (pre-downloaded). NTA.

You prepared and it’s nice to help people out but 100% not required to set yourself on fire (drain your battery)

to keep them warm (power someone else’s device).

pebblesgobambam − NTA. I’m In UK so don’t have to worry about weather knocking the power out but I just always

like to have my power bank fully charged and with me for just in case. Also carry a few different charging cables with me.

Your sister can read a book, play a boardgame or shock horror…. Chat and interact with her family. She’ll survive!

These users agreed the family wasted power and should have saved emergency supplies instead

jstine_4 − NTA. You already gave them one of your power banks and they used it all up. That’s fault for being reckless with it

SnoopyRulez − NTA Her inability to stay off her phone during a power outage to conserve its power is her problem not yours.

Her lack of planning is also not on you. I would get a lockbox so if this happens again you can safely lock it up so only you can get...

pyrotequila85 − NTA. You told them how to prepare, you even told them what to buy to be prepared.

They chose to ignore your advice, that's not your fault.

FrabjousD − NTA. Someone has to be able to call 911 if the phone addicts have an emergency, right?

I have several backups and at least one stays fully charged during an outage.

If the house gets hit by lightning or my spouse has a heart attack, I need to be able to get help.

Do you think she should have shared her new powerbank, or was protecting her own backup reasonable? Have you ever been the only prepared person during a crisis? Share your thoughts below!
