Woman Warns Neighbor Three Times About Her Driveway, Then a $350 Tow Bill Starts a Feud

Good neighbors can make everyday life easier, but one person ignoring a simple boundary can turn a peaceful street into an awkward battlefield. Parking disputes are especially frustrating because what seems minor to one household may feel like blatant disrespect to the person whose property keeps getting used.

One homeowner learned this after their neighbor’s adult daughter repeatedly parked her car in their private driveway. The poster tried being polite first, then left a written reminder, and eventually spoke to the neighbor directly. Still, the same car appeared there again at the worst possible moment.

This time, the homeowner decided that another conversation was not enough and took action. The decision left their neighbor furious and came with an expensive consequence. Now people are debating whether the poster finally enforced a reasonable boundary or turned a manageable disagreement into a neighborhood feud. Scroll down to decide.

A homeowner finally has a neighbor’s car towed after repeated warnings about parking in her driveway

'A or B: My neighbor kept parking in my driveway after multiple warnings. I had her car towed, and now she wants me to pay the fee'

My neighbor and I have houses next to each other, but we don't share a driveway.

My driveway is on my side of the property line, and there's even a fence separating our yards.

About a couple of weeks ago, my neighbor's adult daughter moved back home.

Since then, her silver Civic has been parked in my driveway four different times.

The first time, I knocked on her door and she apologized and moved it.

The second time, I left a note on the windshield saying it was my private driveway and asked her not to park there again.

The third time, I talked to her directly.

She said her daughter only needed the space temporarily and that she didn't think it was a big deal since my driveway was empty.

The fourth time happened last Tuesday.

I got home from work around 7 PM with groceries in the rain, and the same car was sitting in my driveway. No one was home.

I called a towing company first to make sure I was allowed to have it removed from my property. They confirmed I could, so I had it towed.

The next morning, my neighbor came over angry.

She said her daughter had to pay $350 to get the car back and that I should reimburse her because I caused the fee.

I told her I had already asked multiple times.. She said, "I didn't think you were actually going to tow it. You could have just called me."

I told her, "I understand that, but I also expected my driveway not to be used after I asked you not to."

Since then, she hasn't spoken to me. Her daughter texted me saying I made this into a bigger deal than it needed to be.

Another neighbor told me I should have tried one more conversation before escalating because we still have to live next to each other.

I know neighbor relationships matter, but I also feel like I gave enough warnings.

A. I escalated too far. I had already made my point, but towing my neighbor's car over a parking issue created a much bigger conflict.

I could have tried talking one more time because I still have to live next to her.

B. I gave enough chances. I clearly explained that the driveway was private, and my neighbor kept using it anyway.

I don't think I should have to keep asking someone to respect my property.

Few things are more frustrating than calmly asking someone to respect a simple limit and discovering that they only took the request seriously once there was a consequence. The homeowner did not wake up looking for a neighborhood feud.

The car appeared in the private driveway four separate times, despite a face-to-face request, a written note, and another direct conversation. By the final incident, the frustration was no longer about one inconvenient parking spot. It was about repeatedly being told, through behavior, that the homeowner’s “no” apparently did not matter.

The neighbor’s reaction reveals the emotional mismatch at the center of the conflict. She viewed an empty driveway as unused space and apparently interpreted previous objections as preferences rather than firm limits. The homeowner saw private property being used after permission had explicitly been denied.

Her statement, “I didn’t think you were actually going to tow it”, may explain more than she intended. She understood the boundary; she simply did not expect it to carry consequences.

That creates a different perspective on the $350 fee. The tow did escalate the situation, and preserving peaceful relationships with neighbors has genuine value.

Yet another conversation would only have been meaningful if previous conversations had failed because of misunderstanding. Here, the issue appears to have been compliance rather than comprehension. Asking a fifth time could have taught the opposite lesson: ignoring four requests merely produces another request.

Psychotherapist Moshe Ratson, MBA, MFT, explains that effective boundaries require clarity, consistency, and consequences. Writing for Psychology Today, he notes that repeated boundary violations can continue when limits are expressed but never meaningfully enforced.

He recommends clearly identifying unacceptable behavior, explaining what follows when the limit is crossed, and remaining consistent rather than repeatedly changing the standard. Importantly, consequences are meant to protect a person’s limits rather than punish someone out of anger.

That distinction fits this story. The homeowner had already communicated the rule several ways. Having the vehicle removed was not an attempt to control where the neighbor could park generally; it addressed a car occupying the homeowner’s own driveway.

Reddit commenters overwhelmingly recognized that difference, with most choosing B and arguing that several warnings were already more than sufficient.

The wisest next step is not further retaliation. Keeping records, installing a camera if appropriate, and responding consistently to future intrusions would protect the property without feeding a personal feud.

The towing fee may have damaged neighborly warmth, but repeated disregard had already damaged trust. Sometimes a boundary only becomes believable when the person crossing it discovers that “no” was never an invitation to negotiate.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These Redditors said repeated warnings were enough and fully supported towing the car

Comfortable-Focus123 − B - Three strikes already. You were more than patient.

Thell the other neighbor that they can have the offenders park in their driveway if they think you went too far.

Free-Place-3930 − B. And if they park there again TOW IT AGAIN

nancylyn − B, they desperately needed some consequences and they got them. You did nothing wrong. I’d have towed before you did.

After the conversation would be the end of my rope. And no, of course you aren’t going to pay the tow fee.

FrabjousD − C. “If that car isn’t out of my driveway within 10 minutes, you should pick it up at XYZ Tow, which is now on speed dial.

Sorry, but I not willing to be continually disrespected and inconvenienced like this. ”

ericbythebay − B. They could have parked on the street or in the nosy neighbor’s driveway.

These commenters said the neighbors caused their own consequences by ignoring clear boundaries

Chaosboy − Definitely B. People need to take accountability for their actions.

Consistent_Donut_902 − B. She caused the fee by parking her car where she knew she wasn’t supposed to!

If you hadn’t had it towed, she probably would have just continued to ignore your requests. Now she knows you’re not a pushover.

2_Much3636 − Wow. How entitled are your neighbors! ? You straight up told them several times not to park there.

They parked on your private property. Life lesson learned. Don't park on someone else's property. There are consequences.

I would've done the same thing. What is she going to do? Take you to small claims? Naw. You're good.

These commenters felt OP was actually more patient than necessary before finally taking action

Mountain-Status569 − B. Three strikes and you’re out is very common, and you didn’t even have it towed after the third offense.

Even if you had asked them 10 times before towing it, they would have complained “you should have asked one more time. ”

good-luck-23 − Get a camera on the border between you and the neighbor.

Was the homeowner patient enough after three warnings, or should preserving neighborhood peace have earned the Civic one final chance? And should she contribute anything toward that towing fee? Share the verdict below.
