Mother Loses Her Four-Year-Old Son, Then Writes a Heartbreaking Letter to the Nanny Who Found Him

by Leona Pham

in Social Issues

This is a heartbreaking tribute from a mother remembering her four-year-old son, Benjamin, and the woman who had become so much more than his nanny.

Their bond began before Benjamin was even born and grew into a relationship that made her feel like a third parent in their family.

Then, one ordinary Saturday morning, everything changed. His parents left for a hike, leaving Benjamin happily asleep under the nanny’s care.

When he failed to wake at his usual time, she went to check on him and discovered that he had suffered a sudden medical emergency. Benjamin was gone before his parents could return.

Six months later, his mother is still struggling to understand a life without her son, while also grieving the loss of the woman who shared those final moments with him.

The memories of pancakes, chickens, Disneyland, his brown hair, and his sleepy hugs remain precious reminders of the little boy they both loved.

A grieving mother remembers the nanny who loved her four-year-old son like her own before a devastating morning changed everything

not the actual photo

'To the nanny who found our child's body?'

I was 5 months pregnant, swollen, tired and hating myself for promising my

friend we would have lunch together, but I sucked it up and went. And

thank God I did. I remember being emotionally all over the place, I was a

first time mom and had no idea what I was doing.

I was in a mood to complain that day, and once again thank God I was,

because I complained to my friend about not being able to find a nanny my

husband and I liked. She then told me her brother and his family were

moving and their nanny would be available.

I do admit I was a little skeptical but I took their information and contacted

them. Fast forward to September 7th, 2014 when you entered my room

after waiting for 13 hours until I gave birth. You had already become a

friend, but at that moment you became his nanny as well.

You held him with so much care, looked at him with so much love and he

was so calm as if he had known you for a lifetime.

Over the years, you and Benjamin grew to be best friends and you were

definitely an unexpected duo. A naughty, chatty four year old and a calm,

kindhearted fifty three year old. I don't think you even realize how loved

you were. How loved you are. My husband jokingly called you Mrs.

Doubtfire, and you indeed were more than just a nanny, you were like a third parent to our little boy.

Do you remember when we got ten chickens and one of them, the one

with two white feathers, would always chase after you? Or when we took

you to Disneyland for the first time and you flirted with Goofy? Do you

remember crying when Ben decided to cut his own hair? He never had

those beautiful, brown locks of hair again.

I could sit here and type out all of the memories I have. I hope you have

them too. I hope you have so much more than the memory of entering his room that morning.

I often wonder why Zach and I decided to go hiking that day. Saturdays

were always for pancakes, cartoons and walks around the farm, yet we

wanted to go on a hike. Maybe Zach and I weren't supposed to find him.

Maybe we were supposed to kiss his sleeping head and hear him mumble

out a goodbye. Maybe we were supposed to remember his dreamy eyes

and drown in his half asleep hugs.

At 6am,we left the house and left you with a happy, sleeping child. You

were watching him on the baby monitor while making pancakes. You knew

he would be awake around 7. But it was 7:30 and he wasn't awake, you let

him sleep. It was 8:00 and he still wasn't awake, so you went to check up on him.

You know, I never even knew what subarachnoid hemorrhage is. And I've

heard of brain aneurysms, but never really knew that much. Today, I could

probably write a dissertation on this. And my guess is, so could you.

I'm sorry you have to carry the memory of his lifeless body while I carry the

memory of his warm hands hugging me. I'm sorry we weren't there when

you called for help. I'm sorry it took hours to reach us while you spent

hours in agony. I'm sorry the police made you go over everything more

than once and re live your worst nightmare. But more than anything, I'm

sorry you're not in our lives anymore.

We will, without a doubt, forever be connected through our loss. Yes, our

loss. You were just as a mother to him as I was. I guess it was too hard for

both of us. I wanted to be there for you, you wanted to be here for me -

but there was emptiness between us. An emptiness the size of a blue eyed four year old.

The 6 month mark is approaching soon, but you know that. We still haven't

entered his room. A big part of me is still in denial. Before him, we were a

man and a woman. When he was born, we were born as a mother and a

father. Do we stop being parents? Do we go back to who we once were?

That would be nice, not knowing all of this pain, but it's like life before him

never existed. And life after him doesn't exist either, yet.

Our house is suddenly too big, but our home has never been smaller. You

and Ben were our home, and now you're both gone. Hopefully, you're both

in a better place. Hopefully, one day, when and if you stop mourning and

you look up, you will see his eyes in the blue shades of the sky. Hopefully,

one day, you will find strength in your pain. And hopefully, one day, you will

love and nurture another child.

You have so much love to give, and this world needs it. I know Ben would agree, and to quote him:

'' I love you like a big dinosaur with a big heart ''

Some losses are so devastating that ordinary language seems too small for them.

Losing a child does not simply remove someone from a family’s daily life; it can fracture routines, identities, relationships, and the future parents imagined they would share.

In this story, the grief is also shared by someone who was not the child’s biological parent but had become deeply woven into his everyday life.

The most heartbreaking part is the way each adult carries a different memory of the same child.

The mother remembers warm hands, sleepy hugs, and a little boy growing up. His nanny remembers discovering him and having to live with an image she never expected to see.

Neither memory makes the other person’s grief more or less legitimate.

In fact, the nanny’s disappearance from their lives seems to have created another loss on top of the first one.

They both loved Benjamin, but their pain became so overwhelming that being near each other may have felt impossible.

There is also an important psychological distinction between forgetting someone and learning to live with their absence.

Grief does not necessarily require people to sever their emotional connection with the person who died.

Sometimes healing involves finding a different way to carry that relationship forward, even when the person can no longer participate in it.

The mother does not need to choose between remembering Benjamin’s final morning and remembering the four-year-old who chased chickens, flirted with Goofy, and once had beautiful brown hair.

The nanny does not have to remain trapped forever in the image that became her last memory of him either.

Their memories can eventually contain more than the moment of his death.

Perhaps that is why the mother’s final words feel so important. She does not ask the nanny to forget Benjamin.

She hopes she will someday be able to look toward the sky and find something of him there.

She also hopes that the enormous capacity for love the nanny gave to her son might someday be shared with another child.

There may never be a clean ending to this kind of grief. Six months, six years, or decades later, certain memories can still hurt.

Healing does not require making the loss smaller. It can mean allowing the child’s life, personality, and love to occupy more space in memory than the circumstances of his death.

Sometimes the most meaningful way to honor someone is not to remain forever inside the moment they were lost, but to slowly carry what they gave us into whatever life remains.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These Redditors said the story was heartbreaking and left them in tears

Unicornzzz2 − Oh. .. that was so hard to get through but so important. Wow.

a_unicornpatronus − My MB let me go home early to get a start on the

holiday weekend and I left my beautiful, sweet, snuggly, 8 month old NK

asleep in his crib. So at least I'm in the privacy of my own home, while

sobbing uncontrollably. This is utterly eviscerating. The love and loss in this

letter is so palpable and its crushed my heart.

I'm going to be cuddling my sweet boy extra hard on Monday.

jells_bells − Why yes l am, in fact, ugly crying on my couch.

[Reddit User] − Okay that just ripped my heart out

acsz0 − This WRECKED me.

statersgonnastate − Woo. I knew it was going to be a tough read, but my

god. Thank you for sharing that

Goodlifeloading − Oh ... my ... goodness

This group said the story made them want to hug and cherish their kids more

UselessLezbian − Cool. I'm sobbing at the park. Hugging all my NKs extra

hard when I leave for the long weekend tonight.

88moonkitty − Wow I’m absolutely gutted by this. I will go in today and

treat my rebellious, rambunctious NK with extra patience and loads of love.

kelseyn87 − As I snuggled two of my nanny kids in bed last night, at first I

was irritated they wouldn’t lay still or fall asleep. It was a school night after

all. And then I remembered how rare these moments are and how I may

never have the chance again. So I snuggled them a little longer.

Especially after reading this I won’t think twice about doing it again 😭😭

😭😭 (I finally got up and left after one of them cracked me in the nose

and I thought I was gonna pass out from the pain. )

Bluelilyy − That last line wrecked me. I’m in the parking lot waiting to get

NK from preschool and am gonna give him some extra big hugs. My heart 💔💔

creighcreigh − Sitting in the hammock in the backyard with my youngest

NK bawling. .. I can't even imagine.

antsgomarching1by1 − Hugging my babes extra tight today!

The story leaves behind more than grief; it shows how deeply a child can connect the people who love him, even beyond his parents.

The nanny wasn’t simply someone hired to care for Ben.

She became part of his childhood, his routines, and his home, making the loss devastating for everyone involved.

Sometimes grief creates distance between people who need each other most, even when the love is still there.

Do you think they could ever find their way back to each other, or was the loss simply too painful? Share your thoughts below.
