Man Lets Friend Charge His EV For Free, Then Discovers He’s Charging Strangers $20 A Visit

Sometimes, a favor between friends can become complicated when one person quietly turns it into an opportunity to make money. What starts as a simple arrangement can feel very different once you discover that your generosity was being used for someone else’s benefit.

The original poster (OP) allowed a friend to use the EV charger at his home because the friend’s apartment building did not have one. OP never expected anything more than occasional use, so he was surprised when a neighbor mentioned seeing several unfamiliar cars at his property.

After checking his doorbell footage, OP discovered that his friend had been bringing other people over and charging them for access to the charger. Read on to see why OP is now asking for the money his friend made.

A homeowner confronts his friend after discovering he secretly charged others to use his EV charger

'AITJ for telling my friend he owes me the money after I found out he was charging people to use my EV charger?'

A friend of mine lives in an apartment building and bought an EV a few months ago.

His building has basically no charging setup, so I told him he could use the charger at my house whenever he needed it.

I have a driveway and had already gotten a charger installed there..

Last weekend my neighbor asked why so many different cars had been charging at my place lately..

I had no idea what he was talking about.

I checked my doorbell history and over the past couple weeks there were at least 6 different cars pulling into my driveway while I was at work.

My friend was meeting them there, plugging them in, then coming back later.

I called him and he admitted he’d been letting people from his building charge at my house for $15 or $20.

His reasoning was basically that I already told him he could use the charger, the electricity wasn’t costing me much,

and he was the one arranging everything. He also said most of them were coworkers or people he knew, not random strangers.

What really annoyed me was finding out he’d made a few hundred bucks doing it and never even mentioned it to me.

I told him he’s not using the charger anymore unless he gives me what he made from using my property.

He said that was ridiculous, but then offered me $100 as a way to settle it and move on.

I told him that wasn’t really the point and now he thinks I’m dragging it out because I want all of his side hustle money.. AITJ?

TLDR: Let my friend charge his EV at my house because his building doesn’t have chargers.

Found out he started bringing other people over and charging them money to use mine.

He offered me $100 in stake after I confronted him, but I told him I wanted what he actually made from using my property.

Trust can change in an instant when someone quietly turns a generous favor into an opportunity for personal profit. The uncomfortable part is often not the money itself, but realizing that something offered in friendship was being used without your knowledge.

The OP originally gave his friend access to the home charger because he wanted to help with a practical problem. There was no arrangement allowing the friend to invite other people, collect fees, or use the property as a small charging business. Discovering six different cars had been arriving while the OP was away transformed the situation completely.

The friend apparently saw the arrangement as an inexpensive resource he could organize for others, while the OP saw it as permission given to one person. That difference in interpretation is where the resentment began.

There is a fresh psychological angle here: people can become surprisingly permissive with their own behavior when they can explain why the other person is “barely affected.” The friend focused on the electricity cost being small and the fact that he was doing the organizing himself.

Those details allowed him to frame the arrangement as harmless. But the OP was dealing with something broader—access to his driveway, his equipment, his electricity, and his private property. The financial value was only one part of the boundary that had been crossed.

Psychologist Monica Vermani, C. Psych., explains in Psychology Today that boundaries establish the conditions under which relationships can function respectfully.

She notes that people may resist newly established boundaries when those limits interfere with benefits they had previously received, particularly when an old arrangement has become normalized. Healthy boundaries are meant to protect finite resources such as time, energy, property, and emotional capacity.

That insight makes the OP’s reaction easier to understand. The argument is not simply “he used some electricity, therefore he owes every dollar.” The bigger issue is that the original permission was expanded without consent.

The friend made a decision about someone else’s property and then personally benefited from that decision. His $100 offer may have been intended as a compromise, but it also avoided addressing the underlying breach of trust.

There is, however, one useful distinction. The OP should separate compensation for actual costs or agreed value from an automatic claim to every dollar the friend earned.

The strongest issue is the unauthorized commercial use, not necessarily ownership of his entire side income. The exact amount owed would depend on what was originally agreed, local rules, and any costs or damages involved.

What makes this story uncomfortable is how easily a generous favor can become normalized. Helping a friend once does not silently create permission for that friend to expand the arrangement.

A favor remains a favor because both people understand its limits. Once those limits disappear without consent, the real cost may be measured less in electricity than in trust.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These Redditors viewed the unauthorized charger use as theft and strongly supported OP

ReversedFrog − NTJ. Sounds like theft to me.

wd4sgu − NTJ. This is a side hustle in the same way that shoplifting is a side hustle.

Aniso3d − well he's stealing from you. so yeah NTA. . and if it were me , he would no longer be a friend of mine. .

maybe something could have been worked out before hand, but he didn't want that, he wanted to steal from you instead.

George7athome − You are not the jerk. But he definitely is!!!!!

These users suggested charging the friend for the electricity or taking payment for the unauthorized usage

TheRealBabyPop − Figure out what the electricity cost you, double it, then invoice him a bill.

He at least owes you for the electricity. Then try to figure out some way to lock the charger! NTJ

18k_gold − Take the 100 and then don't let him use your charger again.

That pays for the electric usage. He can do his side hustle elsewhere. Also think about going NC with him.

These commenters recommended locking, disabling, or otherwise securing the charger when OP is away

DefendTheStar88x − People are batshit. You're obviously not the jerk. Id look into getting some sort of lock on my charger,

if you can't easily "put it away" while you're not home. He can stop, and i guarantee at least 1 of his 'clients' will be bold enough to try and...

Salacia_Schrondinger − NTJ and NO 'unless'. .. He stays off your property period.

Turn off the charger when you're not there to supervise and put up signs that warn people they will be charged with trespassing.

Otherwise wait until something stupid happens to your charger and deal with THAT instead. He's not your friend.

These Redditors questioned whether the friendship should continue after the friend exploited OP’s property

geek66 − If you are really not hurting for the cash… I would just completely cut ties

And he sting of proving you will walk away at a loss is the biggest smack in the face. Anyone asks, he stole from you

Tir_na_nOg77 − NTJ - You don't want to be friends with somebody like this.

It's a major red flag that they'll take even more advantage of you down the road if the opportunity presents itself.

As the old saying goes "When people show you who they really are, believe them! "

The EV charger may have been the physical centerpiece of this story, but trust was the thing that took the biggest hit. The homeowner offered his friend access as a favor, only to discover that the favor had quietly become a revenue stream involving other drivers and private property.

Whether every dollar should be returned is a separate question from the bigger boundary issue. If a friend secretly turned your driveway into a paid service, would you demand the money, accept a compromise, or simply end the arrangement and walk away?
