Roommate Expects Every Apartment Mate To Be Chinese, Then Learns Her New Roommate Is Brown

Sharing an apartment with strangers can already be an adjustment, especially when everyone arrives with different expectations about how the living arrangement will work. But sometimes, the first disagreement reveals something far more uncomfortable than a simple misunderstanding.
The original poster (OP) returned to university housing expecting to continue living in the same room she had occupied for the previous year. Her new roommate immediately questioned whether OP actually lived there after noticing an issue with her key fob.

Things became even stranger when the roommate insisted that a friend was supposed to have OP’s room and then made an unexpected claim about who her roommates were supposed to be. Read on to see what happened when management got involved.

A student clashes with her new roommate after learning she expected everyone in the apartment to share her race

not the actual photo

'roommate upset im not the same race as her?'

so I'm living in an off campus apartment while I'm at uni.

The place rents out rooms just by room so you can rent one room in a unit and they'll randomly assign 3 other ppl to fill the apartment.

I just got back after the summer to my place where I've lived since last September,

and only one of my new random roommates for the year has moved in and I'm already having problems with her.

My key fob for the apartment wasn’t working properly and she took that to mean I don't actually live here even though

I've lived here and my stuff has been in this room for a year and she JUST showed up. Then she told me "I don't think you can live here"

and "I think you're going to have to leave" because apparently her friend (another one of the girls moving in) was assigned to my room.

No matter how many times I told her this is my room and I've lived here for a year she kept insisting that I had to leave

because her friend was moving in and was going to be in my room. There's no way they double booked my f__king room?

This is an apartment not a meeting room 😭. She even asked for proof that I paid my rent

☠️like she’s the f__king fbi? like you have 2 friends coming in and there's 2 other rooms f__king obviously they're gonna be in those rooms are you slow?

We went to the manager because she didn’t believe me and I knew she was gonna have to hear it straight from management.

and the first thing she says to him is "she's not my roommate. **I received an email that all my roommates would be Chinese**.”

the f__k????? The look on the managers face 😭 he was like "we don't do that here"

did she show up to uni and think they segregate the f__king apartments by race??

How the f__k can you seriously think an administrative office would email a tenant assuring them all their roommates will be Chinese 💀.

And obviously no such email actually exists???

I was trying to give her the benefit of the doubt bc English obviously isn't her first language but this is f__king ridiculous man. I’m brown if that helps 🫩

The manager told her just because my key fob wasn't working (it was a glitch and management just fixed it for me in two seconds)

didn't mean I suddenly don't live here. And then I was like did you want to ask him about how your friend is supposed to move into my room?

Because you said your friend got assigned my room? She goes "I said MAYBE." so yesterday when you told me to leave, that was a "MAYBE"???

clearly you’re just embarrassed now because the manager isn’t falling for your b__lshit.

I'm so f__king annoyed right now, the manager told me after that she's just r__ist and I was like yeah no f__king s__t? Never been so pissed off in my...

UPDATE: I moved out 💀the manager found me another room! if I see her again when I’m moving the rest of my stuff to my new room

I’ll give her a piece of my mind but overall I’m so done w this I need to focus on school

Few things make a new living arrangement uncomfortable faster than realizing someone has already made assumptions about who belongs there. For a college student expecting an ordinary roommate situation, being told to leave your own room is frustrating enough. Discovering that race appears to be part of the assumption can make the experience far more personal.

The OP’s anger came from several layers of disrespect happening almost simultaneously. The roommate initially treated a faulty key fob as evidence that the OP did not belong in the apartment, despite the obvious evidence that the room had been occupied for a year.

She then questioned the OP’s right to remain there and eventually told management that she had expected all her roommates to be Chinese. That statement transformed what might initially have looked like confusion over room assignments into a much more uncomfortable question about racial expectations and exclusion.

There is another psychological perspective worth considering. People often use categories to simplify unfamiliar environments, particularly when they are entering a new social setting. The problem begins when those categories become expectations about who *should* belong.

The roommate may have arrived with a mental picture of what her apartment would look like and then interpreted contradictory information through that assumption. Instead of questioning the assumption, she initially questioned the OP’s presence. That reversal is what made the interaction so offensive.

Psychologist Keith Maddox, Ph.D., who leads the Tufts University Social Cognition Lab, explains that stereotypes influence how people perceive and interpret others, particularly in situations involving uncertainty. His research examines how racial categories can shape social perception, and he emphasizes that these processes can operate in ways people may not fully recognize.

The American Psychological Association likewise explains that discrimination can emerge from learned associations attached to social categories and that racial bias can affect perceptions and behavior even when people are not consciously intending to discriminate.

That insight does not establish exactly what was happening inside the roommate’s mind, but it helps explain why the incident felt so unsettling. A broken key fob was an administrative problem.

It did not provide evidence that the OP was an unauthorized tenant. Once the roommate introduced a racial expectation into the conversation, however, the OP had reasonable grounds to question whether race was influencing her assumptions.

The situation also shows why uncertainty around racial treatment can be particularly exhausting. APA research notes that ambiguity about whether an experience is connected to race can itself be distressing because people are left repeatedly analyzing what happened and why. In this case, the manager’s clarification removed much of that uncertainty.

Moving to another room may ultimately give the OP some peace, but it does not erase how unsettling the encounter was. Shared housing requires basic trust: each person should be recognized as belonging based on actual tenancy, not appearance or assumptions about who their roommates are supposed to be.

A roommate does not need to share someone’s background to respect their right to occupy the space.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These Redditors condemned the roommate’s discriminatory behavior and supported the OP

SoyYo5599 − That's gross and pathetic. I hope the other 2 roommates are not as ignorant and hateful as she is. Good luck!

MomoNoHanna1986 − Unfortunately people think people of colour can’t be r__ist, it’s a big fat lie!

Sorry op, hopefully she moves! Edit: Thanks for all the upvotes! ❤️ ♥️ ❤️

Few_Appearance_6368 − Mean girls vibe😅

halle-lu-jah − How can someone expect every single person they will have to meet or spend significant time to be the same race at them?

These users recommended documenting incidents and involving housing or university officials

EdwardianAdventure − Hi. I'm half Chinese, and in case you wanted a pass to file a discrimination & racial harassment

complaint against her with Student Affairs/ Housing Coordinator / Dean's office, here it is.

She doesn't need to be breaking laws to be skirting pretty damn close to violating school policy. Check Title IX or your school policy handbook.

At worst, she might only get a Stern Talking To from the Director of Multicultural Affairs, but it's worth it.

I'm SEA and yes, the Mainland Nationals do be Like That.

dialsoapbox − Just in case, have management/housing reps document the interaction

as they may try to cause you more problems later. Good to have a paper trail.

MrsKPBailey − Hopefully she’ll request a reassignment. Watch your back and your belongings. Edit: Good for you! Well wishes with your studies!

dirkdiggler2011 − Tell her that your black boyfriend will be staying with you occasionally and watch her explode.

Disastrous-Rock-8771 − She’s gonna keep dishing this. Keep your ground.

Genuinely so stupid. OP, I’m sorry you have to deal with that crap.

Ok-Analyst-5801 − Good luck with that mess.

The original roommate dispute began with a malfunctioning key fob and ended with an astonishing conversation about who supposedly belonged in the apartment. The student had already lived there for a year, yet her new roommate apparently questioned that simply because the housing arrangement did not match her expectations.

The later reassignment gave the student a clean opportunity to focus on university life rather than spending the semester navigating unnecessary conflict. The bigger question remains: how would you handle a roommate who expected everyone in a shared apartment to look like them?
