Sister-In-Law Sends Movers To Take Woman’s Piano, Then Demands $300 When She Refuses To Hand It Over

Some belongings are more than furniture or household equipment. They carry memories of growing up, family celebrations, and people who helped shape our lives.

A piano that rarely gets played might look like wasted space to someone else, but its owner may see something entirely different. That’s why making decisions about another person’s possessions without asking can create resentment, even when the intentions seem generous.

For one Reddit user, that lesson became painfully clear after her husband arranged to give away the piano her parents had purchased when she was a child. His sister wanted an instrument for her daughter, who had recently begun learning to play, and he apparently thought the unused piano would be perfect.

The problem was that the OP knew nothing about the plan until movers appeared outside her house. When she refused to cooperate, her sister-in-law sent her an unexpected invoice. Read on to find out how the woman responded and why her husband suddenly became unusually quiet.

A woman discovers her husband promised her childhood piano to his sister without asking

Sister-In-Law Sends Movers To Take Woman's Piano, Then Demands $300 When She Refuses To Hand It Over
not the actual photo

'AITA for sending my SIL a price for my piano after she billed me for the movers she booked to take it?'

On Saturday morning 2 guys from a moving company knocked on our door to pick up my piano.

That was the first I’d heard of anybody picking up MY piano. They had a work order with my sister-in-law’s name and our address on it.

My husband was at his brother’s house helping him put up a fence all morning so I just stood out on the porch in my socks

with the movers waiting by their truck and called him to ask what in the world was going on.

His sister’s daughter started lessons in September and has been practicing on a little keyboard, and apparently

he’d promised his sister the piano because I “haven’t touched it since we got the house.”

He was going to tell me Friday night and forgot.

It’s an upright my parents bought me when I was 12.

There’s a long scratch down one side from when my brother tried to skateboard through our living room in high school,

I don’t know why that’s the first thing I think about when I look at it.

I don’t play it much anymore, mostly at Christmas when my mom makes everybody sing.

As soon as I said it wasn’t going anywhere he went “fine, then you explain it to her” and hung up, so I went back out and sent the movers...

Sunday my SIL texted me the receipt. It was $300, which is their minimum even if nothing gets moved,

and under it she wrote “since you sent them away I think this one’s on you.”

I looked up what used uprights like mine go for around here and texted her back that if she wants it for her daughter it’s $1,400,

and I’d take the $300 off so she isn’t out anything for the movers. I meant that too. If it’s going anywhere I’d rather it be my niece.

She left that on read. My husband has been pretty quiet since Saturday and the piano’s sitting right where it’s been the whole time.. AITA?

Few things create family conflict faster than someone making a decision about another person’s belongings without asking first. The object itself may be replaceable, but the message underneath it can feel deeply personal: you decided I would give something away before I even knew there was a decision to make.

That is what makes the piano situation more complicated than a $300 moving bill. The OP’s husband apparently promised his sister an upright piano that had been given to his wife by her parents when she was twelve. He arranged for movers to collect it without telling her until the night before, then forgot to mention it altogether.

When the movers arrived, she had no choice but to send them away. Her SIL subsequently billed her for the $300 cancellation and implied that the cost was hers to absorb. The OP responded by offering to sell the piano for $1,400, deducting the $300, and even making clear that she would prefer the instrument to go to her niece.

A fresh psychological perspective is that the argument is less about whether the OP still uses the piano and more about agency. People can attach meaning to possessions even when they rarely use them.

An item can represent childhood, family history, or a version of oneself that is no longer active. The fact that she mostly plays it at Christmas does not transform it into communal property.

Psychologist and researcher Sherry Turkle has studied people’s emotional relationships with objects and explains that possessions can become repositories for memories and identity. In her work on the psychology of objects, she argues that seemingly ordinary things can carry stories and emotional significance far beyond their practical utility.

That distinction matters here. The husband appears to have reasoned from utility: his wife rarely plays the piano, his niece is learning, and therefore giving it away seemed reasonable. But usefulness is not the same thing as ownership. A person does not lose the right to decide what happens to something simply because they are not using it every day.

The SIL’s reaction also introduces a second issue. Her $300 charge may have been intended as reimbursement for a wasted trip, but the responsibility for that wasted trip appears to belong primarily to the person who arranged the pickup without confirming with the owner. The OP did not order the movers.

She did not cancel a previously agreed appointment. She was confronted with strangers at her door carrying instructions to remove her property.

This is where the OP’s $1,400 response can look provocative, but there is a reasonable interpretation of it. She was not demanding money simply because the movers showed up. She was establishing the actual terms under which the piano could leave her home. By offering to subtract the $300, she even attempted to neutralize the immediate financial dispute.

The more important conversation, however, needs to happen between the OP and her husband. His decision to promise someone else her property without permission is the core breach of trust. The SIL’s expectation may be irritating, but the husband created the situation.

The piano may eventually become his niece’s. That could even be a lovely outcome if the OP chooses it. But a meaningful gift should be given by its owner, not quietly promised by someone else.

Sometimes the fairest solution is not about the price of an object at all. It is about restoring the simple rule that should have existed from the beginning: if it belongs to someone else, ask before giving it away.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These Redditors blamed the husband for promising away property that was never his

hedwigflysagain − NTA, time to rehome your husband's dearest possession now. He is the real villain in this story.

Pale-Experience-2409 − Your husband promised away a piano he doesnt own and forgot to mention it.

Then he hung up so that saying no to his sister would be your job instead of his.

Hes been quiet since Saturday because theres no version of it he can say out loud that sounds alright.

annetoanne − This is between your husband and his sister. Tell her to take it up with him because he’s too much of a c__ard to tackle this issue himself.

kindofanasshole17 − The only AH here is your husband.

SIL is pissed that she wasted $300 hiring movers, based on a promise your i__ot husband made and was unable to keep. I don't really blame her.

Migrainefarm − NTA, you have a husband problem not a SIL problem.

This commenter agreed the husband was at fault and also noted how difficult pianos can be to give away

Life_Temperature2506 − NTA, but the real villain here is your husband.

But this fascinates me: I recently saw something, somewhere (maybe Reddit? ) that suggested you can't even GIVE pianos away nowadays.

Can't even donate them, unless YOU pay and arrange transporation, and even then finding a place that will accept them (like a school) is difficult.

This user suggested a firm message telling SIL to deal directly with the husband

TalkieTina − ”(SIL’s name), Hubby offered to give you the piano but never asked me. It wasn’t his to offer.

I was flabbergasted to have my door pounded on Saturday morning by movers trying to take it.

It has sentimental value to me and I don’t want to part with it. If the shoe were on the other foot, you’d probably be livid.

I’m not but I am not going to give up my piano when I want to keep it, especially since no one told me about it beforehand.

I tried to offer it to you strictly to come up with some sort of solution,

but I’ve decided against that now, especially when you didn’t bother to reply to the offer.

Under the circumstances, I’ll not only be keeping my piano, but am not responsible for paying for movers that I didn’t contract with.

Any further communications about this should be directed to hubby. I had nothing to do with any of this and knew nothing beforehand. ”

If SIL and hubby want the situation to get weird, that’s on them. You did nothing wrong. NTA

These users also criticized the SIL for trying to take the piano and then demanding money

Sharp_Freedom_3980 − She tried to steal your piano and then billed you for the attempt. NTA.

Timely-Flatworm7757 − Yikes. NTA. Your husband and SIL sure are, though

cassowary32 − Is your husband okay because WTF? ? He promised something that wasn't his then left you to deal with it,

then the sister tried to bill you for refusing her attempt to steal your property? What is going on in that family? NTA.

Should the husband pay the movers’ bill since he arranged the giveaway without permission? Was the wife’s counteroffer reasonable, or should she refuse to sell the piano altogether? And who owes whom an apology?
