Couple Buys a Three-Bedroom House, Coworker Calls Them Selfish for Not Having Children Yet

Buying a home is often one of the biggest financial decisions a couple will ever make. People consider countless factors when choosing a property, including affordability, location, future plans, and how much space they need for everyday life.

But while most homeowners expect congratulations after finding the right place, some discover that others have surprisingly strong opinions about what kind of house they’re entitled to own.

One Redditor recently shared an uncomfortable conversation with a coworker after moving into a spacious three-bedroom detached house purchased by their partner. The couple lives with their large dog and plans to use the extra bedrooms as home offices and guest accommodations.

Although the property needs considerable renovation, they see it as a long-term investment in their future. However, when the OP mentioned the purchase at work, a colleague accused them of being selfish for choosing a family-sized home. Keep reading to discover why the unexpected criticism left them questioning their decision.

A couple faces criticism for buying a spacious three-bedroom house without having children

'Being called “selfish” for buying a 3 bed detached house as a couple…'

My partner has just purchased a large 3 bed detached house on a lovely estate.

I’ve moved in, eventually I’ll buy into it too, long story as to why not now. It’s just us and our large dog.

We got the house for a steal of a price as the couple in it were really needing to move to be closer to family.

House was extremely tired and in need of a LOT of work to make it nice to live in.

I was talking to a coworker and the essentially said “taking a well priced 3 bed detached home off the market when you don’t have,

or are planning to have, kids is actually quite selfish”. I was absolutely taken aback by this!

We were looking for a 3 bed so we could each have our own office,

with one also functioning as a guest bed for when my parents visit (they live 4 hours away) and my best friend who lives abroad come to stay for a...

Now I will say, the house does feel huge with just the two of us and a dog so I do agree it is a “family home”

but we are planning to have children in the future and this will be our home for a long while.. What do you think?

Few things make a personal achievement feel unexpectedly uncomfortable like having someone question whether it was deserved. Buying a home is usually a milestone worth celebrating, but for one couple, that excitement was overshadowed by a coworker’s accusation that their purchase was selfish.

The couple had recently moved into a spacious three-bedroom detached house with their large dog. The property needed substantial renovations, but its attractive price and long-term potential made it an appealing investment.

Their plans were practical. Both partners wanted dedicated home offices, while one room could accommodate visiting relatives and friends. They also hoped to have children eventually, making the property suitable for their future.

However, a coworker argued that purchasing a reasonably priced family-sized home without currently having children deprived another family of the opportunity.

The accusation left the homeowner stunned.

At the heart of this disagreement is a conflict between personal freedom and broader concerns about housing affordability. The coworker’s frustration may reflect genuine anxiety about families struggling to find suitable homes, especially when larger properties are expensive or scarce.

But that concern doesn’t automatically justify judging individual buyers based on their current household composition.

A couple without children can still need additional space for work, caregiving, guests, accessibility, or future plans. A home doesn’t become unnecessary simply because every bedroom isn’t occupied overnight.

There’s also an important distinction between recognizing structural housing problems and assigning personal blame to people participating in the ordinary housing market.

Housing research supports a broader interpretation. In its 2026 housing policy analysis, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) identifies inadequate housing supply, rising construction costs, restrictive land-use policies, and insufficient investment in affordable housing as contributors to affordability problems.

The report emphasizes expanding affordable housing and making better use of existing properties, rather than assigning housing rights according to whether buyers have children.

This perspective matters because the coworker’s criticism turns a complicated social issue into an individual moral judgment. The couple didn’t acquire a publicly designated family home through special privileges. They purchased an available property that required considerable work.

Their plans also demonstrate that housing needs evolve. Today’s offices and guest bedroom could become children’s rooms in the future, although they shouldn’t need to promise parenthood to justify their purchase.

Rather than defending every bedroom, the couple could simply explain that the house meets their long-term needs and decline further debate about their family plans.

Ultimately, wanting a comfortable, adaptable home isn’t inherently selfish. A person’s right to enjoy adequate living space shouldn’t depend on whether they currently have children.

See what others had to share with OP:

These Redditors dismissed the coworker as jealous or judgmental and said OP can buy whatever home suits them

amzlrr − It’s not selfish in the slightest, your coworker is sad and bitter they don’t have a 3 bed detached house.

If someone else wanted it, they would’ve put an offer in.

Urbanyeti0 − Ignore your jealous coworker, we’re buying a 4 bed for just us and our pet, because we both wfh so need the space, and we can afford that...

Klutzy_Brilliant6780 − I feel sorry for your co worker. They are either a sad, jealous person, or an incredibly judgemental p__ck.

LivingPage522 − Your coworker is delulu. You buy a house to suit your needs and desires, not other people's needs and desires.

Ikiro00 − It's not like you're a multimillionaire that has bought their third house.

It's the house you live in, and besides, you've already proven your coworker wrong in your post since you state that you

and your partner *are* looking to have children in the future. Your coworker sounds like a numpty, enjoy your house!

These users argued that people without children still deserve space, pets, gardens, and the home they want

Nice_Back_9977 − I live alone in a 3 bed house with one small dog. Not having kids doesn’t mean we only deserve

to spend our lives in little boxes with no pets, no gardens, no hobbies! F__k that coworker, how incredibly f__king rude and judgemental.

Otherwise_Fan_4864 − I live in a "3 bed detached house" as a pensioner. Your colleague would have apoplexy, but f__k her. Live where you want to live.

pop_punk_vegan − You don’t need to justify this to anyone. I don’t know why people who don’t want to have kids always have to justify their life decisions

This commenter shared a similar experience of being judged for buying a house without children

Illustrious_Study_30 − I got called similar for buying a house because we don't have children. Apparently houses are for families .

Mind you, the same person thought is was disgusting I took time off during the school holidays too. Some people are just arseholes.

This user said buying the best home you can afford can make sense long-term, especially if family plans change

AgainstGreaterOdds − I bought a 4 bedroom house for me, my wife and my cats.

Guess who doesn’t have to move now that our first child has been born, and neither if another one comes?

The British are way too particular about upsizing every x years. It’s ridiculous. Always follow the mantra of “buy the best you can afford”. It’s great.

Was the criticism an understandable reaction to housing pressures, or an unfair judgment of someone else’s choices? Should household size influence which homes people buy?
