Mom Takes Back Everything She Bought for Her Kids After Grandma Keeps Favoring One Grandchild

by Leona Pham
October 23, 2026
in Social Issues

Family gatherings are supposed to make you feel welcome, but repeated favoritism can make even a simple dinner feel like another reminder that your children come second.

Sometimes, the things you quietly provide for everyone only become noticeable when you finally take them away.

OP had spent years supplying her parents’ home with everything her children might need, from toys and dishes to diapers, car seats, and safety equipment.

Despite this, she felt her parents consistently favored another granddaughter, even when both girls were close in age and lived nearby.

During two family gatherings, OP’s daughter was repeatedly overlooked, including being left without a high chair while the favored granddaughter got the only available one.

After another frustrating Thanksgiving, OP finally reached her limit. Her father told her to take her things if she was unhappy, so she did exactly that.

Now relatives are blaming her after another child was hurt without the baby gate she had provided. But was OP responsible for what happened? Read on to find out.

A mother removes the baby gear she provided for her children after repeated favoritism leaves her feeling overlooked during family gatherings

not the actual photo

'AITA for taking all my kids stuff from my parents?'

AITA for taking all the stuff I've provided to my parents for my kids?

Background, my parents have always favored one grandchild over the

others and it has shown since day one. Granddaughter A (spoiled one) and

granddaughter B (mine, younger) are a couple months apart in age. Its fun

and nice to have cousins close in age but my parents have always had more

to do with A. They have always seen her more and do more with her than B

despite us both living in the same town.

Last week me and my family (spouse, son and daughter) were invited over

to my parents for dinner to celebrate my birthday after getting there my

mom informs me my sibling and their family is joining us too. I say oh I

didn't know that. She then says well I figured you want to celebrate with

everyone. Sure it's fine. Problem though is my mom doesn't have enough

stuff at her house for all the kids, example she only has one high chair but

there's 2 kids at dinner that need a high chair. Had she told me I could have

brought one but she didn't inform me therefore granddaughter A got to sit

in the high chair up to the table with us and I had to sit with my daughter in

my lap and try and eat meanwhile we're celebrating my birthday and I'm

having a hard time even eating. It was annoying.

Then on thanksgiving we show up to my parents and we're over an hour

late due to my mom never actually telling me a time we're supposed to be

there. I guessed based on previous years which would have put us on time..

they waited for us to eat but then once again there's only one high chair

and 3 kids there on the holiday who need one. And my mom says ok

granddaughter A get in the high chair. No questions of who's going in the

high chair or if they're going to take turns nothing.. I'm annoyed, they all

waited over an hour supposedly for us to get there to eat but no one said

anything to me about needing to bring a high chair, I was already bringing a

lot to thanksgiving and didn't think I needed to bring that too, thinking she

would tell others to bring theirs since they weren't bringing as much as me.

Ok whatever my daughters ignored like always, then looking at the table to

eat and she doesn't have enough plate sets out. At that point I said s__ew it

I'm leaving clearly we were not thought of and I don't feel welcome. I pack

up the kids and get them out to the car to leave. My son is saying he wants

to stay and eat and my spouse says they'll take him in so he can eat. I say

that's fine, but I'm not going back in. I stay in the vehicle, scrolling social

media while they go in to eat.

My dad comes out and tells me to grow up and take responsibility. I told

him y'all sat here for how long knowing there's one high chair and none of

you thought to message me or call me and let me know to bring mine? He

said enough of the blame game take responsibility for not bringing yours. I

said how about granddaughter A goes without since they didn't bring one

either? I supply you and mom with all kinds of things for my kids to make it

easier on you and yet I'm still expected to do and bring more because what

I give is always used for others and I don't care as long as my kids are

getting it when they're there. He told me whatever take your s__t then. I

said fine I will. So I did, I took everything I've given them to have for when

my kids are there. Car seats, baby gates, toys, cups, plates, tooth brushes,

diapers, wipes, everything that was mine. Now I'm being told I'm an a__hole

and hurt the other kids because I took my stuff I had there for my kids. And

I'm being blamed because one of the kids actually got hurt because I took

my baby gate. And I feel bad that a kid got hurt but I also don't feel I'm

responsible for that like they're saying. I'm responsible for my kids not

others even if they benefit from what I do for my kids, and when I was told

to take my stuff I did. I feel they all just use me for what I do or supply that

makes it easier for them, but none of them realize how much it is until it's

gone and then they blame me because they don't have it. So AITA for

taking my stuff after my dad told me to?

Edit to add: Sorry y'all, I'm new to Reddit and just typed everything out

without really thinking of grammar/paragraphs. I want to add some details

people brought up in the comments.

1. High chair is my moms that she got for her house, she has a few things

for the kids but I supplied a big chunk of things for her. I believe it is my

responsibility to make sure my kids have whatever they need wherever

they are. I didn't care if any other kid(s) benefitted from what I brought

with the condition that it's mine and my kid gets to use it over the others

when they are present. So I left everything at my parents house for them to

have whenever they needed it for any kid.

2. In my core I want all kids happy, healthy and safe. Anyone who knows me

knows I will go above and beyond for a child. I double check car seats for

parents, I buy diapers and wipes if a parents needs it, I make sure kids get

something on their birthday to know they are thought of and loved. I love

with my whole heart and give my all and I know that screws me at times. So

believe me when I say I was crushed and hurting when my SIL texted me

telling me "a child was hurt because you took your baby gate". That's what

made me come to Reddit. I questioned everything I did because of that one

statement. So thank you to those that told me not to and it was not my fault.

3. There's a lot of talking that happened with me and my mom about

thanksgiving. I told her "you and dad need to plan to have food ready by

1pm if you're wanting to eat by 3pm because you guys are always running

late lol" she laughed and agreed with me. Therefore, I interpreted that as

food being ready by 3pm not 1pm. She never did tell me a time so again I

planned for the normal 3pm time they have done my entire life. We talked

on the phone 3 times that day about various different things in regards to

thanksgiving but being told to bring a high chair was not one of them.

4. If you ask my siblings I'm the spoiled rotten favorite being the youngest.

They also refuse to see me as an adult and not a child so if anything

happens and I can be blamed I am. Being in therapy for the majority of my

adult life I've learned my family is abusive or has abusive tendency's. So I've

learned they manipulate me by telling me "you're the spoiled one" "you're

the baby" "you're the favorite".

5. A few people said to go to my in laws for family functions. My in laws are

beyond worse than my own family. The favoritism is EXTREME. MIL doesn't

like me because I took her baby boy away from her, but that's a whole

different can of worms. Needless to say I'm very low contact with them.

And after this post I'll be going low contact with my own family.

I'll update after I talk to my parents about it all and let y'all know how they

take being told me and my family will be going low contact.

UPDATE: my mom texted me apologizing and then informed me she did in

fact forget to tell SIL to bring a high chair. But she did tell her when they

got to her house. Which was still hours before me and no one said anything

to me. She said "sorry I didn't ask" I told her she's oblivious to the blatant

favoritism and mistreatment. They're so inconsiderate and don't even

realize it, pointed out my birthday and all she could say was "oh.... we

always do birthdays together as a family" which is untrue. Talking to my dad went nowhere.

I feel awful knowing my kids now have no grandparents in their lives. My

sons birthday is coming up too. Just sucks, and I did not see this being the

reality we live as ridiculous as that is. Thanks for everyone's feedback, good

and bad. I did not think this would blow up as much as it did.

Few things hurt more than realizing that the people who are supposed to make your children feel equally loved are quietly treating them as though they matter less.

For the OP, the Thanksgiving incident was not simply about a high chair, missing plates, or a forgotten schedule.

Those details became painful because they fit into a much older pattern of favoritism.

The emotional dynamic is easy to understand. The OP had repeatedly supplied car seats, toys, dishes, diapers, wipes, gates, and other necessities so her children would be comfortable at their grandparents’ house.

She did not resent other grandchildren benefiting from those things. What hurt was feeling that her effort was expected while her own children were repeatedly overlooked.

When her father told her to “take your stuff,” she responded literally.

Her later guilt over another child being injured shows that she was not trying to punish the children; she was struggling to separate responsibility for their safety from responsibility for her parents’ household.

There is another perspective worth considering: the OP may have been carrying more responsibility for the entire family system than she realized.

People who are accustomed to compensating for others often become the invisible infrastructure of a family.

They bring what is missing, anticipate what children need, solve logistical problems, and then receive little recognition because everyone becomes accustomed to their contribution.

From the outside, removing those supplies can look petty.

Psychologically, however, it can represent a late attempt to reclaim ownership and stop automatically fixing problems that belong to other adults.

Taking back personally owned belongings was not the same thing as taking away necessities that belonged to her parents.

The baby gate incident is especially important: once the equipment was removed, the grandparents became responsible for providing a safe environment for whichever children were visiting.

Feeling sorry that another child was hurt is compassionate, but compassion does not automatically create responsibility.

The healthier lesson may be less about winning an argument and more about refusing to remain the family’s automatic supplier.

If the grandparents want to host several grandchildren, they can purchase and maintain the equipment needed for them.

The OP can continue loving her nieces and nephews without financing the infrastructure of the household.

Family favoritism is painful enough without being told that setting a boundary makes someone selfish.

Sometimes taking back what belongs to you is not retaliation, it is simply recognizing where your responsibility ends.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

Almost everyone agrees that OP did nothing wrong

Spinnerofyarn − NTA. They don’t get to call you the AH for doing what they told you.

ProfessionalPepper87 − NTA: They definitely are using your desire to have

the necessary items for your children to be safe and comfortable as a way

of not having to provide them. I had this with my sister. Bottles, play pen,

walker, car seat, toys. .. the list went on. .. only for me to find my items

broken or dirty for my kids to use.

.. I took the items that were damaged and threw them away, cleaned and

took the items that were my kids. Every time I visited my parents after that,

I brought everything they would need . .. made sure only my kids used them

and packed them up when it was time to leave (2+ hr drive one way).

My parents and sister bitched and complained that I was being selfish. I

responded that I could no longer afford to replace the items when they get

damaged and was only being sensible. I suggested my sister purchase any

items she needs and store them there . ... but that was shot down.

Stick to your guns and If packing up everything you need to visit then let

them know that visits will be fewer because of the hassle of packing all of the necessary items.

Irishtemper98 − NTA. But your family is made up of a bunch of AHs. Take

your kids and their stuff home and go low-to-no contact. It seems they

bring no real joy or value to your life, so why subject yourself and your kids

to their b__lshit needlessly?

DevilPup55 − NTA They can just replace all the things you supplied and were told to take.

Fun-Yellow-6576 − NTA. I’m a grandparent, have always purchased things

for my house. Cribs, baby gates, high chairs, car seats (currently have 3 + a

booster seat). Now the kids are older we have a bedroom with a trundle

bed. Your parents are the AH here.

Tiny-Ad-830 − I will hopefully be a grandmother next year. I plan to buy a

copy of everything for my house so my daughter will not have to constantly

be packing the car full for every trip. It is my responsibility to make this

home safe for the baby, no one else’s.

Lisa_Knows_Best − NTA. It's clear who the favorite is. Keep your kids away

from that. The favoritism will become very clear the older the kids get.

Your stuff is your stuff and they shouldn't benefit off of you to cater to

others kids. You are fine. They suck.

The commenter emphasizes that there were still adults present

5p83d − NTA. Frankly, your family sounds insufferable. As far as a child

being injured after you took the baby gates and other things, how exactly is

that your fault? There were adults present that possessed eyes. They

couldn't use them? Once upon a time parents parented and kids survived to

adulthood having learned from mistakes. .. mostly.

Lastly, did you get an explanation as to why they couldn't even set the table

with a proper number of plates? Sorry, but I'm just curious. That thread was left dangling.

Several commenters interpret the situation as evidence of longstanding grandchild favoritism

RocketteP − NTA. But as the child who was not the favoured grandchild

please protect your kids. Start making new traditions for the holidays going

forward. Your parents have continually favoured one gc over the other. This

is a consequence of their actions. You’re no longer subsidizing them so

grandchild A gets to be comfortable. Either they can pony up for new

things or ask the parents.

RalphysMum − Keep your children far away from these people! They will

see the favouritism as they age and will wonder why they are not enough

for their grandparents! NTA

These commenters go further and suggest low contact or even no contact if the family continues behaving this way

ny_dc_tx_ − NTA. Your parents are though. And the fact that your dad

doubled down lets me know they aren’t changing. I would go low contact.

And if anyone asked why I took my stuff tell them your father told you to so

you did and he can replace it.

FormInternational583 − NTA. You're not immediate family to them. You're

just tolerated. You're just someone related to them, and they use you for

the things you provide for their immediate family. Step back from them.

This is not the family dynamic/model you want your children to see, or

accept as normal. Go LC/NC. Stop putting yourself out for people who

don't appreciate or love you.

OP’s decision to take back her own belongings was reasonable, especially after her father explicitly told her to “take your stuff.”

The bigger issue was the repeated favoritism and lack of communication that left her feeling like her children were an afterthought.

The baby gate incident may make her feel guilty, but responsibility for child safety ultimately belongs to the adults caring for those children, not OP’s decision to reclaim her property.

Do you think OP went too far by taking everything, or was this the boundary her family needed? Share your thoughts below!
