Mom Remembers the Family Who Welcomed Her as a Teen, Now Hopes to Become That Safe Haven for Others

Some of the most meaningful childhood memories aren’t about expensive vacations or elaborate celebrations. They’re about the places where we felt safe, welcomed, and free to be ourselves.

For teenagers growing up in strict or stressful households, having another family offer a warm, judgment-free environment can make an enormous difference. Sometimes, those small acts of kindness leave an impression that lasts decades and eventually inspire someone to extend the same generosity to others.

One Redditor recently shared a touching memory from her teenage years while reflecting on the kind of mother she hopes to become. Now raising two children under ten, she dreams of creating a home where her kids and their friends always feel comfortable.

Her inspiration comes from a childhood friend’s parents, whose relaxed attitude and welcoming household provided a comforting escape from her own tense family environment. More than 25 years later, she still remembers their kindness. Keep reading to discover why one particular evening remains so meaningful to her.

'Be those parents'

So I am a mom of 2 under 10, and I keep hoping we'll be the sanctuary house for my kids and maybe their friends.

When I was a teen I remember my house was tense and my parents were strict.

I loved hanging at a particular friend's house because her parents were older hippies and just chill.

The first dinner at their house I had Gouda for the first time (we never had cheese that wasn't cheddar or American)

and they talked about all the tenses of the verb "to s__t", which was hella racy for my 14-year-old brain.

And when I learned to drive, even if they weren't home, sometimes I would park in their driveway and just sit on their porch until I had to be home...

I remember one night they came home around dusk to find me there and I said I just didn't want to go home yet. And they told me I was...

I still think of my friend and her parents fondly all the time though all this was more than 25 years ago.

They welcomed a stray kid because that's who they were. I hope I can be that person for someone else someday and pay it forward.

Some of the most influential adults in a child’s life aren’t necessarily their parents, teachers, or relatives. Sometimes, they’re the people who open their doors, offer a place at the dinner table, and make a young person feel welcome without demanding an explanation.

For one mother of two children under ten, that lesson has remained vivid for more than 25 years.

Growing up, she described her own household as tense and strict. Although she had a home to return to, it wasn’t always somewhere she felt comfortable spending time.

Instead, she found an unexpected refuge at a friend’s house.

Her friend’s parents were older, easygoing people whose relaxed attitude made their home feel different from her own. She remembered being introduced to Gouda cheese for the first time and listening to hilariously inappropriate dinner conversations that seemed wonderfully shocking to her 14-year-old self.

Those details might sound insignificant, but they represented something she deeply appreciated: the freedom to relax without constantly worrying about saying or doing the wrong thing.

One memory stood out in particular.

After learning to drive, she sometimes parked outside that family’s house and sat on their porch, even when nobody was home.

She wasn’t necessarily looking for entertainment or conversation. She simply didn’t want to return to her own house yet.

One evening, the family arrived home and discovered her sitting there.

When she explained that she wasn’t ready to go home, they didn’t interrogate her or make her feel uncomfortable.

They simply told her she was welcome.

Decades later, she still remembers that moment with gratitude.

Now raising children of her own, she hopes to create the same kind of welcoming environment for them and their friends.

Research from Harvard University’s Center on the Developing Child helps explain why such experiences can matter long after childhood.

Its 2015 working paper, Supportive Relationships and Active Skill-Building Strengthen the Foundations of Resilience, identifies a stable, committed relationship with a supportive adult as a major protective factor for children facing adversity. Such relationships can help young people manage stress, develop coping skills, and feel more secure.

The friend’s parents probably didn’t realize how much their ordinary hospitality mattered. They weren’t delivering lectures or attempting to rescue anyone. They simply offered a predictable place where a teenager could feel accepted.

Importantly, becoming that kind of adult doesn’t require having a perfect household or abandoning reasonable boundaries. A welcoming home can still have rules, expectations, and safeguards.

For this mother, the goal might begin with small gestures: remembering her children’s friends, offering them meals, listening without judgment, and making it clear that asking for help is never something to be ashamed of.

If a child seems afraid to return home, genuine support may also involve checking on their safety and helping them connect with appropriate assistance.

The most touching part of this memory is that the woman doesn’t describe receiving expensive gifts or extraordinary favors. She remembers cheese, laughter, a porch, and two adults who made room for her.

Twenty-five years later, their kindness is still shaping the kind of parent she hopes to become.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These Redditors cherished homes that become safe, loving sanctuaries for other kids

oddreplica − you wrote that so clearly that I almost feel as though the memory of those parents/that family and their house is my own.

thank you for sharing that effervescent nostalgic feeling!

my partner and I are child-free but we're simpatico in that we want our house to always be that safe-yet-exciting place for our niblings to visit and/or stay.

our eldest niece is a freshman at a school in Manhattan and this is her second weekend coming down to Philadelphia to hang with us.

I'm honored by her presence, if that makes sense.

Expert-Welder-2407 − I’m forever thankful and grateful my mom made our house that space for my many friends who needed it.

She is amazing and I’m glad you had an experience with a similar safe house ♥️

The_Dog_Lady444 − My dad was this for so many of my hoodrat friends growing up. 🥹

I can't even count how many times kids would say "I wish I had a dad like yours. "

I will say my dad had his flaws, he was a little *too* loose with rules sometimes.

But he was a broken man going through the throws of my mom having an affair and getting divorced

and he just really wanted to make us happy in a time we were all so devastated.

He is a good man and he was made a good impact on a lot of my friends lives by just being a safe place for them to land when...

Burnt_and_Blistered − I also had a tense home, and had a sanctuary until I was in middle school.

After that, I just tried to be gone *anywhere*, as much as possible. I made sure our house was the sanctuary.

My kids are grown, and their friends from way back when still text me. You’ll be very important to a lot of people. And you know what?

It will be healing for you, too. Your dinner looks amazing

These users shared how they became trusted “bonus parents” for children who needed support

Sad-Potential3355 − We are those parents also.

Somehow our kid became a magnet for all these kids whose parents abuse them and even disown them in one case.

They are all always welcome at my house. One kid’s parents even refused to throw her a HS graduation party, so we are hosting it for her at our house.

I can’t tell you the number of times her friends have shown up at my house crying, and here’s Mama (my last name, as they all call me)

waiting for them with a hug and something to eat if they haven’t eaten yet.

There are some crazy parents out there. I truly do not know why these kids are so hated by their parents.

They are all good kids with good grades and some are even old enough to have college commitments already.

One girl got grounded bc she asked for more time to hang out with my daughter - her parents said no, so she still went home on time,

and she was grounded for two months. Just for ASKING.

The only silver lining is that my kid gets a front row seat to how good she has it at home. 🥺💔 but in the meantime, on graduation day,

I’ll have a picture of me with my daughter and all my bonus kids. 💖 if their parents won’t love them, I will.

ETA : thank you for all these awards 🥹 I’m just an eldest daughter out here still eldest daughter-ing in my mid 40s 💖

it’s amazing to see how many moms we have out here being moms to other kids. It truly takes a village! ✨

blondie956 − This has been me with my kid and his friends. One got engaged and called me before he called my son.

"Mom, she said yes! " They all call me mom or Mama (last name). I'm so grateful I could pass it along.

icedquackuccino − We're a queer home ran by 2 lesbians and 4 kids. 2 being her first kids turned ours and our other 2 IVF girls.

It's almost impossible to be queer, particularly a lesbian, in this country. So our kids friends know our home is a welcome space.

You never know what kids are put through in their households. I personally grew in an unsafe environment.

Making sure our home is a haven for other children matters so much to me because I also, at a time, had to camp at a friend's house.

Love we got to experience village, community and choose to be villagers.

hatenames385 − When my son was in pre-k he met a little friend. Little did I know that I was about to be that person for my son’s friend.

Dad was an a__oholic and just a horrible person. To the point mom was just a shell of abuse.

I told him call me anytime and I will pick him up no questions asked.

He’d have panic attacks at school and mom wouldn’t answer so I’d pick him up from school and hang with him a bit.

Dad would be drunk scaring him and I’d go get him out of there. He and my son are 23 now.

They are talking about his engagement to a wonderful girl they grew up with.

I can’t wait to see him in a tux. Love him like my own

This user shared a funny example of their home encouraging open, unexpected conversations

Hesitation-Marx − We once baked the noodle of my son’s karate friend by having a discussion about the actual sin of Sodom from the Bible,

which is funny when you consider it was Me: non-observant, witch-flavored Jew Husband: former Christian,

now atheist Son: non-observant, extremely witchy Jew Friend: child of Southern Baptists It was an interesting discussion.

This commenter proudly noted that their home became the preferred hangout spot for the kids

60threepio − I've noticed with our 13yo that the ratio of "can x come for a sleepover" to "can I go to X's for a sleepover" swings heavily

in favor of our home being the preferred hangout spot. I'd like to think it's my partner and I,

but it's likely the lavishly stocked snack cabinet and generous diet coke policy. 🙃

Did you have a friend’s family who made you feel at home? Or have you become that trusted adult for someone else?
