Young Nurse Pays Half the Family’s Bills, but Mom Calls Her Selfish for Wanting Her Own Life

Becoming financially independent is an exciting milestone for most young adults, but what happens when the rest of the family depends on their income to survive? For some, moving out isn’t simply about finding an apartment or enjoying personal freedom.

It means confronting years of financial responsibility, complicated family expectations, and the fear that choosing their own future could leave loved ones struggling. When guilt becomes part of the equation, even a reasonable decision can feel impossibly selfish.

One 22-year-old Redditor recently shared her emotional dilemma after graduating from nursing school and securing her first nursing position. Since she was 19, she had been contributing significantly to her family’s household expenses, especially after her father’s death in 2023.

Despite working exhausting shifts throughout school, she had little opportunity to save money or build an independent life. Now, with her family’s lease approaching its end next year, she’s considering moving out. Keep reading to discover why her mother sees that decision as abandonment.

'AITAH for wanting to leave my financially dependent family when our lease ends?'

I (22F) am a new grad nurse. I am planning to move out as early as next year

when our current lease is up, but I am feeling immense guilt because my family is financially dependent on me.

I currently live with my mom (52), my brother (20), and my sister (17). Since I was 19, I have paid half, and sometimes more than half of all the...

When my dad passed away in 2023, our family took a massive financial hit.

My mom has always been financially illiterate and has never held a stable job. she refused to work at all for about 7 years while my dad was alive.

Right around the time my dad got sick, my mom got her CNA certification and asked me to get mine too.

Shortly after, I applied to nursing school. To keep us afloat and prevent eviction, I worked nights throughout nursing school.

I’ve had to pull double shifts, sell jewelry my dad gifted me,

and empty my student aid returns and personal savings to cover bills and my mom’s constant job hopping.

Carrying this household has heavily stunted my personal growth. I don't even own a car because I've never been able to save for a good one,

so I rack up hefty Uber bills just to get around. My mom refused to teach me how to drive, so I finally caved last year and paid for my...

I just landed a nursing position that starts next week making decent money. My goals are to buy a car, start building my credit, and move out.

I love my family dearly and I don’t want to see them struggle. However, my mom already expects that because I will be making "nurse money,"

I will essentially act as a permanent roommate who throws extra cash at her whenever.

I feel like I cannot save, build credit, or ever start my own life if I stay here.

I’ve brought up the idea of me leaving multiple times this year and each time has ended in a yelling, crying mess.

she tells me how Im selfish, and will abandon this family and leave everyone essentially homeless.

Sometimes, the hardest part of becoming independent isn’t earning enough money to leave home. It’s realizing that the people someone loves have become dependent on the sacrifices preventing that independence.

For one 22-year-old nursing graduate, this dilemma has become painfully personal.

After her father’s death in 2023, she helped keep her family financially afloat while completing nursing school. Since age 19, she has paid at least half of the household expenses, frequently contributing even more.

She worked night shifts, took on exhausting hours, sold jewelry her late father had given her, and depleted savings to prevent the family from losing their home.

Meanwhile, her mother struggled to maintain steady employment, leaving the young woman responsible for financial obligations that would overwhelm many established adults.

The sacrifices came at a substantial personal cost.

Despite completing her nursing education, she still doesn’t own a car, has struggled to build savings, and had to pay for driving lessons herself.

Now, with a new nursing position beginning soon, she finally sees an opportunity to establish financial stability.

Her goals are modest: purchase reliable transportation, build credit, save money, and eventually move into her own home.

But her mother apparently sees the new salary as an opportunity for continued financial support rather than a chance for her daughter to become independent.

Whenever the daughter mentions leaving after their lease ends, the conversations reportedly dissolve into accusations, tears, and warnings that the family could become homeless.

The emotional conflict isn’t simply about money. It’s about the difference between helping a family through hardship and becoming permanently responsible for keeping everyone financially secure.

A 2023 systematic review published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health examined 95 studies on parentification, a pattern in which young people assume responsibilities typically associated with parents.

Researchers distinguished practical responsibilities, such as managing household finances, from emotional responsibilities, such as maintaining family stability. They found that these experiences can be associated with distress and strained relationships, although outcomes vary.

The nurse’s situation resembles this role reversal, particularly because her mother’s emotional reactions make independence feel like betrayal.

Her mother’s fear of financial instability may be genuine. Losing a spouse can devastate a household, and supporting a minor child adds pressure. However, those circumstances don’t automatically make the eldest daughter responsible for replacing her father’s income indefinitely.

A practical transition could involve setting a firm moving date, establishing a personal savings account, protecting financial documents, and helping the household explore employment or assistance options without promising unlimited support.

The distinction matters: she can help her family prepare for change without surrendering her future to prevent it.

After years of sacrifice, wanting independence isn’t evidence that she loves her family less. It may simply mean she’s ready to build a life that includes her own needs.

These Redditors urged OP to quietly save, secure finances, and prepare to move out

Mean-Dragon-6863 − yeaaa i wouldn’t bring it up again. do your thing, save money, achieve your goals,

and don’t mention moving out until you’re ready to walk out the door. edit: thank you for the awards! ! :)

Total-Object-4766 − NTA Freeze your credit and have your bills go to a po box.

Make sure you are the only one who can access your money and credit. Secure all your personal documents.

Your mom isn't going to like you leaving but you'll never grow in life and be free if you allow her to anchor you with responsibilities that aren't yours.

Do NOT tell your mother how much your new job pays. Start depositing your money in account that's associated to your new PO Box.

Tell your mom your good for $____ per month towards rent and that's it. It will be hard, she might resent you, but stand firm.

You need to build up savings so you can afford your deposit on your new place and hopefully get a car and insurance.

Any utilities in your name need to be put in your mom's name; otherwise you'll need to cancel service.

You need to tell your family before they sign to renew the lease so they can prepare to not depend on you.

Good luck and congrats on the new job!

Lisa_Knows_Best − Leave the first chance you get after you get your first paycheck.

Start looking for a room to rent that's close enough to work you can walk or bike then worry about getting a car.

Get out first cause your mother will sabotage you leaving.

She'll keep having financial "emergencies" and she'll drain you of every penny you earn, you'll never get away.

You should open a new bank account at a bank she doesn't know about and get a PO Box immediately.

Keep all your personal information as private as you can.

Don't tell your siblings either. It's not that you can't trust them but they're going to be looking out for themselves as well.

Your mother has likely convinced them that you are responsible for them too, youre not, that's all on her.

It's not your job to cover her failures or make up for her selfishness.

Don't let guilt hinder your progress, you've already done way more then you should have. Your mother is 100% responsible for herself and her kids.

Focus on getting ahead for you, take care of yourself for once. NTA.

These users said the mother is guilt-tripping OP and should take responsibility herself

Monday0987 − Your mother is emotionally manipulative. Your siblings are all old enough to work. NTA

PurpleEmotional1401 − "she tells me how Im selfish, and will abandon this family and leave everyone essentially homeless. " Or she could get a job. NTA

Beautiful-Bobcat-959 − NTA Go live your life. . tell your mom you Will be moving out - then she has a chance to find some place Else to live

And her guilt tripping you is just bad. . she is old enough to work and figure her life out.

She Will be mad but thats on her. And if you Can afford to live by yourself- do Can she

These commenters questioned why the older brother is not contributing financially

I-luv-sloths − Your 17 year old sister was eligible for SS since your dad passed away. Is your mother spending that?

It's not your responsibility to support your mother and siblings. Does your brother work?

bythebrook88 −  my brother (20), INFO: Is your brother contributing? He's older than you were when you started paying.

Tls-user − Is your 20 year old brother working and contributing too?

omnixe-13c − INFO NEEDED: So what about your brother? Where does his money go?

Should adult children feel obligated to support their parents indefinitely? And when does family loyalty become an unfair financial burden?
