Pregnant Woman Spends Hours Cooking Thanksgiving Dinner, Only to Discover Her In-Laws Ate Without Her

Standing up for your partner can be an important part of marriage, particularly when family members cross boundaries or make someone feel unwelcome.

However, protecting a loved one and escalating a family conflict aren’t necessarily the same thing. When resentment has been building for years, an argument about holiday plans can quickly become a much larger disagreement about loyalty, respect, and personal limits. Sometimes, the words spoken in frustration create an entirely new problem.

One Redditor recently found herself questioning whether she’d gone too far during a disagreement with her husband. Married for almost three years, the OP described loving his large family while struggling with what she considered their ongoing mistreatment of him.

An upsetting Thanksgiving gathering during her pregnancy had only intensified those feelings. Now that they had a baby daughter, she wanted to spend Christmas with her own relatives, but her husband preferred maintaining their usual holiday rotation. Read on to discover why her response left her questioning whether she’d crossed a line.

A wife threatens to expose her in-laws’ secrets after a humiliating Thanksgiving sparks a Christmas dispute

'AITA for threatening to expose my in-laws’ secrets if my husband insists we spend Christmas with them?'

This is my first time posting on Reddit, so I’m sorry if my post is long. I need outside perspectives because a decision needs to be made soon.

I (31F) have been married to my husband (33M) for almost three years, and we’ve been together eight.

He’s a kind, stoic man who gets along with everyone.

He comes from a big family: his parents and more than a handful of siblings, each with a partner, and between them a lot of kids.

My side is a fraction of that: my maternal grandparents, my mom and her two sisters, their husbands, and a few cousins.

I genuinely love my in-laws. We text during the week, see each other all the time, and we live reasonably close to all the siblings.

We’re a close-knit family through and through.

So what’ could be my issue? Here’s a bit of background:

My husband is the youngest of his siblings, and I’m the oldest of my cousins, so I notice the dynamics.

I’ve seen how he gets treated as “the baby,” and over the years I’ve voiced my concerns about it a few times. He usually agrees, then brushes it aside.

You might think he’s coddled because he’s the youngest, but actually it’s the opposite. It’s like he’s bullied by his family.

He’s very non-confrontational, and he’s been treated this way for so long that he’s been conditioned to believe this is how families are with each other.

This behavior is what sets off the next turn of events.

So, at Thanksgiving last year I was pregnant and living the dream: morning sickness, swollen feet, GD, you name it.

Right before the holidays my OB said I couldn’t travel out of town due to how far along I was.

We normally alternate holidays, so we spent Thanksgiving with his family in our city

and were supposed to spend Christmas with mine in our home state, but we never made it.

My mom knew that would be the case, so she came to spend Thanksgiving with us. In the family group chat, everyone said what they were cooking.

I had mac and cheese, roasted Brussels sprouts, and one other dish, my mom had two more sides, and my husband had the turkey.

We agreed to eat at 4pm at one of his siblings’ houses. Since I was heavily pregnant and knew I would need breaks,

I started cooking at 7am, and my mom joined around 9.

I spent most of the day waddling around my kitchen and nibbling baby carrots

so I wouldn’t get sick from not really eating — I was trying to save my appetite for dinner.

By the time we finished, my feet were blimps, and I still had to get dressed.

My husband slept in and lounged a bit while the turkey cooked,

so he wasn’t rushing because the turkey had to finish but as soon as it did, we packed up the car and left.

We got there about twenty minutes late. We walk in and the dining table was littered with dirty napkins, empty cups, beer cans, and demolished plates.

I ask what’s going on and I’m told they had eaten a couple hours earlier, without us, so they could watch the game after they ate.

No one texted or called. I whispered to my husband I wanted to leave right that second, but I think he thought I was joking, or just didn’t want to...

I sat on the couch next to my mom, and we exchanged looks but said nothing.

Some of the women wanted to rub my belly and chat, but I was too angry to talk, and I didn’t want to stress the baby, so I fell asleep...

When I woke up about three hours later, I went to the kitchen and found our turkey picked apart like a starving animal had found it.

They devoured that too after full meals! We said goodbye soon after, and in the car I told my husband how disrespected I felt.

The disrespect wasn’t only towards me, but at him and my mom, and our baby too!

We have never left anyone out of an event without at least a text or call first if we planned to start a bit earlier.

I understand if his parents or the little kids needed to eat early, but not a dozen healthy adults.

I waited all day to eat with them, while pregnant, and got no grace. And I still didn’t eat while there, so I was actually very HANGRY.

When I brought it up during our conversation, my husband apologized and agreed it wasn’t okay. But no one else in his family has ever said a word about it.

So now we’re in the present, and this year I want to spend both Thanksgiving and Christmas with my family.

It was my family’s year for Thanksgiving anyway, plus we missed Christmas with them last year, and I’d like it as a reset for me.

After that, we’d go back to alternating.

My husband thinks we should keep the usual rotation and says it’s unfair, since we also didn’t get to spend Christmas with his family last year.

I reminded him that we had a baby, my family lives out of state, and we didn’t spend Christmas with anyone

(besides my mom, who was there for the birth and aftercare). He still doesn’t think it’s fair.

I tried explaining how I don’t want to have a repeat nor do I want this continued disrespect and mistreatment to ruin my holidays.

Here’s where I might be the a-hole. I told him that if we do spend Christmas with his family and I feel an ounce or an inkling of disrespect,

I will ruin Christmas for everyone. When he asked what that meant, I said I’d reveal everyone’s business, including secrets and gossip.

I also said I wouldn’t stop at the people who’ve been rude to me, people who’ve done nothing wrong would get it too, and the kids would be collateral.

That was my warning to him if we do it his way instead of mine.

I told him that ANY form of disrespect towards him is a reflection of how his family would be okay treating me

because as a married couple, we are ONE, and I refuse to be talked to any kind of way.

And now that we’ve had a baby, that mistreatment could extend to her, and I’ve already verbalized to him in my weekly mantras

that I would go nuclear for her. So, even though I love my husband so much and he’s too damn nice for his own good,

I just can’t tolerate anyone’s direct/indirect disrespect towards him anymore.

I will be facing the them head on instead of voicing my concerns to him on the side.

It’s been a couple of weeks since that convo. Thanksgiving is happening with my family as originally planned, but nothing has been said about Christmas.

So, AITAH for threatening to ruin Christmas if we go with my husband’s plan?

Edit: Okay so this isn’t an update but I guess it’s an edit? I just want to add context and clear up some misconceptions that I see repeated in the...

There are a lot of comments, I did not expect this to blow up so I’m writing this instead of replying to each individual.

These are in no particular order of importance either just off the dome but I hope I covered them for the most part,

also I’m sorry if this is long too, I’m trying to be detailed:

1. My “threat” was absolute word vomit after over an hour of back and forth with my husband and it was blurted out of frustration.

It was a shock to both of us. Was it wrong, yes, and I agree that I WBTAH if I followed through on it, going off the wall is not...

My husband even knew the threat was baloney because he knows I’ve never set out to intentionally hurt anyone, especially not kids aka my nieces and nephews.

2. Mentioning the collateral damage portion was never spoken out loud but in my head, but I understand everyone’s horror reading that because of how I’ve written this.

Like I said, I’m sorry this is story is long, I tried editing out the lagniappe and by doing so it’s not written out the best.

The innocent adults and children would be affected by the secrets and gossip not because I have anything bad to say about them, but sort of like a domino effect.

Meaning if I revealed one thing about the “bad people” it would affect/trickle down to the “good people”, makes sense?

Another thing to add, I think the those who have been good to me act as bystanders to the disrespect,

in a way I don’t think of them as entirely innocent, but that’s just me.

3. Those of y’all saying that I’m abusive and my husband should divorce me/ take my child… y’all sound unwell lol.

I wouldn’t even say that this was a tactic to use against him, it was literally blurted out of frustration, not planned at all but I digress.

4. Why didn’t I leave immediately… y’all at that point in time I was heavily pregnant, like couldn’t see my feet.

I could not drive myself because I wouldn’t be able to reach the pedals properly, I’m 5’4” and driving squished up would be dangerous for everyone.

My mom also couldn’t drive us because she’s disabled folks. We were both stuck like chuck. Uber/Lyft wasn’t a thought either so yeah.

5. My husband did fix us to go plates, didn’t notice them until we were home, but they were fixed right after I went to sit on the couch and...

And my mom did not eat while there out of solidarity so my girl was hungry too lol.

6. There was 1 turkey, the one we brought. Not sure why someone thought there were two.

The family ate a small roast that someone made and the sides others fixed before we got there.

Being a bit late was out of my control so please give me a break on that, but ultimately it didn’t freaking matter because they ate long before.

7. The time for meeting was actually 4:30, I went back through my texts.

The reason for this was because one of my husband’s brothers was working that day and we wanted to make sure that he would be able to attend.

How nice, right? Well come to find out (back then) he was somehow able to arrive early enough to participate in feasting.

So we really were an afterthought, because the plan was to wait for everyone

but I guess it didn’t matter as long as the 1st born son was in attendance (more context, 3 girls born first and then 3 boys).

8. I do love this family but I know they aren’t perfect, and I don’t have to love them blindly.

I have stood up for myself multiple times in this family, I’m not a mute.

I have not done anything to deserve their ire but standing up for myself could be the reason.

Also I purposely didn’t say anything at Thanksgiving because once again, I did not want to upset myself and affect the baby.

If I brought up all the situations I’ve spoke up against them, Reddit may enforce a character limit on posts if there isn’t one already.

Too much to write plus one situation involves a bit of the gossip so might share that one but idk rn.

9. I definitely agree with everyone mentioning therapy, I already am and love it. I have suggested to him before about seeing a therapist too but he’s been hesitant.

I will give some credit to him because he did consider it seriously and said he would find someone before the end of the year.

Over the course of our relationship, he has slowly realized his family’s ways are actually mistreatment and he’s coming to terms with it.

I would love for the next step to be couple’s therapy because I think it’s a healthy route for us.

We aren’t divorcing over this y’all, so those who are salivating over this outcome, womp womp.

10. Lastly, I’m not condoning my husband’s actions but I will defend him only when it’s warranted.

He was wrong for how he handled it and his passive behavior has put us in this and other situations.

However, he did own up this time, granted it was after the fact.

There was another situation in our family group chat where I was ganged up on for standing up for myself

and he did actively address the whole family in the moment — though it was through text and not in person I will still give him credit.

And there was a comment made about my daughter by one of the family members that was off-putting to say about a baby,

let alone one so closely related and he checked that immediately. He’s a work in progress y’all, this might not satisfy some but hey,

I can’t please everyone on Reddit.

Sometimes, the deepest family resentment comes not from one terrible incident, but from watching someone repeatedly disrespect the people a person loves. Holiday gatherings are supposed to create belonging, yet they can become painful reminders of longstanding family dynamics.

For one mother, a disastrous Thanksgiving has turned Christmas into an emotional battleground, leaving her torn between protecting her family and potentially destroying the holiday altogether.

The conflict began when she arrived at Thanksgiving dinner heavily pregnant, exhausted, and hungry after spending hours preparing food. Despite an agreed gathering time, her husband’s relatives had already eaten without notifying them. Her mother also went without dinner, while the husband appeared reluctant to challenge his family.

Although he later apologized, the experience reinforced her belief that his relatives routinely disregard him. Now, with a baby to protect, she wants to spend Christmas with her own family. Her husband prefers maintaining their traditional holiday rotation.

Interestingly, her anger seems rooted less in the missed meal than in accumulated disappointment over her husband’s unwillingness to confront his relatives. She may see herself as defending him, while he may interpret her demands as forcing him to choose between his marriage and his family.

His reluctance could also reflect years of adapting to uncomfortable family dynamics. Avoiding confrontation may have become his way of preserving peace, even when that peace comes at his own expense.

Certified Gottman Therapist Kari Rusnak, writing for The Gottman Institute, explains a psychological response known as emotional flooding. When disagreements become overwhelming, people may react through confrontation, withdrawal, or emotional shutdown.

Rusnak notes that unresolved frustrations can accumulate until a seemingly familiar disagreement triggers an explosive response. Her explanation emphasizes that intense emotional reactions can make productive conflict resolution difficult.

She recommends recognizing emotional overload, taking time to regain composure, and returning to the underlying problem when both partners can respond constructively.

This perspective helps explain why the woman’s frustration escalated into threatening to expose family secrets. She later acknowledged that the threat was inappropriate and described it as an impulsive statement rather than an intended plan.

Nevertheless, threatening innocent relatives or exposing private information would create additional harm without resolving the original disrespect.

A more constructive approach would be for the couple to establish holiday arrangements that acknowledge last year’s disappointment while setting specific expectations for future family gatherings. Attending separately could also be considered. Couples therapy, which she already hopes to pursue, may help them address recurring family pressures.

Ultimately, protecting a marriage shouldn’t require destroying relationships with everyone else.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These Redditors said OP should simply spend the holidays with her own family

jinxxed42 − Your husband is an issue. Sounds like he didn't care or contribute at all to the cooking.

So HE DOESN'T HAVE A STAKE IN IT. . AND HE DOESN'T CARE. He didn't do the work.

The reason why you are getting upset is because you feel you are fighting this alone. Go you your family Xmas this year. ..

Honestly, Dont throw ultimatums around.

Just dont go to his family Xmas. ... cause deep down he won't change enough to protect you. So Actually enjoy your Xmas.

Glad-Ad6237 − It's not negotiable. You tell him you and the baby are spending the holiday with your family. He can stay behind our come along.

Hot_Dragonfruit7944 − All you needed to say is he is welcome to spend any of those days with his family if he wants to. ..

but you are doing Thanksgiving and Christmas with your's with or without him and baby will be with you!

Just be the better person and not cause all that drama and simply do what you want with your family!

SinglePermission9373 − They suck and frankly I wouldn’t go to their house for any holiday again. Husband can go alone if he wants to.

But going and blabbing stuff just sinks you to their level. Don’t be that person. Just take your baby to your parents and tell hubs he can join you or...

phoofs − I would never join that family for a big meal, or anything else that included any dependence on them.

Ever! You may feel you are/were close to them. I don’t think they can an ounce about the 3 of you.

The level of not caring, they didn’t even apologize, after the fact?

I would explain to my husband it makes me very sad you have such low self-respect, you are willing to be treated so poorly.

For you to be okay with your pregnant wife to be treated so poorly is disheartening. However, I believe we teach people how to treat us.

If I were to attend another holiday meal without a discussion & sincere apology, I would teach them it’s okay to treat me lower than dirt.

This is only how I feel & how I would address it. I hope it is helpful for you. If not, please ignore.

These users said the frustration is valid, but exposing secrets or hurting uninvolved relatives goes too far

HoundstoothReader − Well, your frustration is justified. But yes, YWBTA for bringing up unrelated secrets, sharing unpleasant gossip,

letting the kids absorb collateral damage, and hurting family who have done nothing wrong.

“I wouldn’t stop at the people who’ve been rude to me, people who’ve done nothing wrong would get it too.”

That is a ridiculous and disproportionate response—you’ll come off as unhinged rather than responding to disrespectful treatment.

Also YTA for the blackmail. “That was my warning to him if we do it his way instead of mine. ” I was with you till the end, when you...

JudgeJoan − Everything was fine and I am totally down for all of this until you said the children are collateral damage. Skip that part and you’re good to go.

LongBarrelBandit − ETA. They’re obviously for how they’ve been treating you guys,

your husband for not standing up for himself and realizing this is kinda messed up behaviour, and you for threatening to air dirty laundry just to get your way.

If you love your husband, then talk to him. Sit down and have the hard conversation.

But saying “if I don’t get my way I’ll purposely cause drama” is a big ol a__hole move mate. Is that really the kinda relationship you want going forward?

This user was mainly invested in the drama and wanted future updates and gossip

Super-Respond-7717 − I wish this was already on “the best of redditor updates” and not just posted 10 minutes ago.

I wanna know the secrets and the scandals and how Christmas went. Nta. I don’t know what to say but I do want to hear the gossip.

This commenter supported OP protecting herself and her baby from further mistreatment

cx4444 − I dunno what else his family did but you go mama. Protect your loved ones

Was the woman’s Christmas ultimatum an understandable reaction to repeated disrespect, or did threatening to expose family secrets cross a line regardless of what her in-laws had done?
