For years, Rowling has faced criticism for her views of undermining transgender rights. This tension escalated when she responded to a tweet suggesting whether it should be “safe” if Radcliffe and Emma Watson should apologize to her for being supportive of the LGBTQ+ community.
“Not safe, I’m afraid. Celebs who cosied up to a movement intent on eroding women’s hard-won rights and who used their platforms to cheer on the transitioning of minors can save their apologies for traumatised detransitioners and vulnerable women reliant on single-sex spaces,” said the renowned author.
Obviously, Radcliffe wasn’t very pleased with this comment by, sadly, one of the people who he looked up to the most.
Speaking with The Atlantic, the Now You See Me star expressed a mix of respect and disappointment about his current relationship with Rowling:
“It makes me really sad, ultimately. I do look at the person that I met, the times that we met, and the books that she wrote, and the world that she created, and all of that is to me so deeply empathic,” Radcliffe revealed.
“Harry Potter would not have happened without her, so nothing in my life would have probably happened the way it is without that person. But that doesn’t mean that you owe the things you truly believe to someone else for your entire life,” he stood his ground against the person he has long admired.
Radcliffe also reiterated his commitment to supporting LGBTQ rights, stating simply, “I will continue to support the rights of all LGBTQ people, and have no further comment than that.
Since 2020, J.K. Rowling has been at the center of controversy for her comments about transgender people, which many have perceived as transphobic. The Harry Potter cast has varied in their responses to Rowling’s views, with actors like Tom Felton and Harry Melling expressing disagreement alongside Radcliffe and Watson, while others such as Evanna Lynch, Helena Bonham Carter, and Ralph Fiennes have defended the author.
In other news, HBO announced in April 2023 a planned reboot of the Harry Potter books into a ten-season TV series, with Rowling expected to play a significant role in the adaptation, aiming for a 2026 debut. However, none of the main cast from the movie franchise will return, including Radcliffe, Watson, Grint, and Felton. The new lineup for the TV series is not yet announced.
Additionally, Rowling is working on adapting another of her works, The Christmas Pig, a children’s book, into a project separate from Harry Potter.
