Summary:

- Directed by Andy Serkis, the new addition to The Lord of the Rings franchise is set for a 2026 release.
Viggo Mortensen has finally spoken out about the possibility of reprising his role as Aragorn in the upcoming film The Hunt for Gollum. Announced earlier this month, the new addition to the Tolkien saga is set to fit into the early timeline of Peter Jackson’s trilogy and will be directed by Andy Serkis.
Mortensen originally appeared as Aragorn in The Fellowship of the Ring in 2001 and made his last appearance in The Return of the King in 2003.
Since the announcement, there has been much speculation about the casting, especially given that The Hunt for Gollum will feature several prominent characters from Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies.
During an interview with GQ, Mortensen finally addressed whether he would consider returning as Aragorn. He said:
“Sure. I don’t know exactly what the story is, I haven’t heard. Maybe I’ll hear about it eventually. I like playing that character. I learned a lot playing the character.”
“I enjoyed it a lot. I would only do it if I was right for it in terms of, you know, the age I am now and so forth. I would only do it if I was right for the character. It would be silly to do it otherwise.”
Can the Original Lord of the Rings Cast Return for The Hunt for Gollum?
Two decades have passed since Peter Jackson’s original Lord of the Rings trilogy, which changed cinema with its epic scope and breathtaking Middle Earth landscapes. More than ten years have also gone by since the release of The Hobbit.
Given this passage of time, many original cast members may no longer be able to reprise their roles. Some actors have passed away, while others, like Mortensen, are significantly older now.
The Hunt for Gollum is set in the timeline before Frodo leaves The Shire in The Fellowship of the Ring. This means Mortensen would need to appear the same age as he did during that time.
Although de-aging technology could achieve this, it is unclear whether Warner Bros. will choose this route or opt for recasting. Finding someone who can match fans’ memories of Mortensen’s iconic performance would be a significant challenge.
Andy Serkis, known for his portrayal of Gollum in the original trilogy, will direct this new film, with Jackson serving as executive producer. It remains to be seen whether Serkis will contribute to the creation of Gollum on-screen again, considering the physical demands of the role.
Anticipation Builds for The Hunt for Gollum
The Hunt for Gollum has already been slated for a 2026 release date. With the extensive CGI work required to bring Middle Earth to life, more details about the cast will likely emerge soon. Fans are eager to see who will take on these beloved roles in the latest Tolkien adaptation.
Mortensen’s potential return as Aragorn adds an exciting layer to this highly anticipated film. As the project develops, it will be interesting to see how the filmmakers balance honoring the original trilogy with introducing new elements to keep the story fresh and engaging.
