Legendary actor Sir Ian McKellen has hinted at Gandalf’s possible return in Andy Serkis and Peter Jackson’s next Lord of the Rings movie, The Hunt for Gollum.
In a recent interview with The Times, McKellen spoke about “stirrings in Tolkien land” and shared that he has heard rumors of Gandalf’s inclusion in the new project.
McKellen famously portrayed Gandalf the Grey/White in both Jackson’s original Lord of the Rings trilogy and its prequel trilogy, The Hobbit.
Despite The Hunt for Gollum being a prequel to The Fellowship of the Ring, McKellen’s involvement in another prequel wouldn’t be unprecedented, as he reprised his role in The Hobbit trilogy a decade later.
He has often joked that he fits the part better as he ages, given that Tolkien’s beloved Istari member is thousands of years old.
During his conversation with The Times, McKellen revealed that he has “heard” that Gandalf is planned to be featured in the upcoming Hunt for Gollum movie.
This aligns with recent fan theories suggesting that both Gandalf and Aragorn could appear alongside Serkis, who returns as the iconic live-action Smeagol/Gollum and also serves as the director.
However, McKellen noted that he has yet to see an actual script.
“There is no script, there is no offer, there is no plan,” McKellen told the outlet. When asked if he would consider the role, he teasingly replied that as long as he’s “alive,” he would be up for it. “If I’m alive.”
The Hunt for Gollum promises to delve deeper into the rich lore of Middle-earth, and McKellen’s potential return as Gandalf would undoubtedly excite fans of the franchise.
