Picture this: you’re at dinner with someone new, hoping for a spark… but instead, you get a monologue on mass destruction. One Reddit user found herself in this exact scenario when her Tinder date, a shift leader at a nuclear power plant, decided the best way to impress her was by talking about how he could trigger a meltdown.

What started as a mildly awkward encounter spiraled into something much darker. With his dehumanizing language, unsettling rants, and claims of control over life-threatening machinery, the date ended with the woman reporting him to the FBI. But now, she’s wondering: did she do the right thing, or did she just ruin someone’s career over a really bad joke? Want the radioactive details? Scroll down for the full story.

Woman Reports Creepy Date To FBI After He Jokes About Meltdown—Was She Wrong?

One woman’s Tinder date turned into a chilling thriller when her match’s dark “jokes” about his nuclear power plant job took center stage. Here’s the full scoop from her Reddit post:

'Aita For Reporting My Tinder Date To The Fbi?'

So, I (27F) recently went on a Tinder date with this guy (32M) who works at a nuclear power plant. Seemed interesting over text, but the actual date turned into a complete nightmare. He shows up 45 minutes late, no apology, just starts bragging about his job as shift leader in the control room.

His attitude was really off-putting; he talks about having power over 'midgets' and 'vermin', and by that, he means people in general, which was really disturbing. He ranted about how much he hates everyone he sees and how he wants to cause chaos and destruction.

I tried to steer the conversation to something else, but he kept fixating on his job. Then things got really worse; he starts bragging about knowing how to trigger a reactor core meltdown, laughing about it like it's some kind of joke.

I couldn't tell if he was serious, but it totally freaked me out. It seemed like he was getting a kick out of the idea of using his position to cause a c**astrophe. I ended the date early, went home, and couldn't stop thinking about what he said.

Was he trying to impress me in a sick way, or could he really be dangerous? After a lot of thought, I decided to report him to the FBI. I figured it's better to be safe than sorry, right? But now I'm second-guessing myself.

Some friends think I did the right thing, but others say I should've just ignored it since he was probably joking. Can't shake the feeling I might've overreacted and potentially ruined someone's career over a bad joke. So, Reddit, AITA for reporting my Tinder date to the FBI for bragging about being able to cause a meltdown?

First dates are already stressful enough without your dinner companion joking about ending civilization. In this story, the Redditor walked out not just with disappointment—but with a gut-level fear that led her straight to the FBI.

The man allegedly claimed he had the knowledge and access to cause a nuclear reactor meltdown. While that might sound like something out of a movie, it’s anything but a laughing matter. In fact, people who work in high-stakes environments like nuclear facilities are expected to uphold the strictest safety standards, not casually drop world-ending hypotheticals over drinks.

According to World Nuclear News, nuclear facilities undergo rigorous security screenings and continuous psychological evaluations. Employees at critical positions, especially in control rooms, are held to tight behavioral and ethical standards. One commenter who works in the industry said even making such jokes would raise serious red flags and likely result in mandatory mental health evaluations.

But what if he was just trying (and failing) to be funny? That’s where intent and impact clash. “Jokes” about large-scale violence or terrorism—especially when paired with hateful language like calling others “vermin”—aren’t just tasteless; they’re potentially criminal. As security analyst Dr. Laura Dugan told PBS NewsHour, even casual remarks can trigger legal investigations if they suggest a real threat, because “intentions can be hidden, but actions start with words.”

In this context, the woman acted not out of spite, but out of caution. And while her actions may affect the man’s job, the bigger picture is public safety. If he was exaggerating or lying, professionals will sort that out. If he wasn’t? Her report might’ve stopped something terrible.

Ultimately, this story underscores an important truth: we can’t afford to gamble with red flags in a world where security matters. Reporting concerning behavior isn’t overreacting—it’s protecting lives.

Reddit had a lot to say about this meltdown-in-the-making.

This Redditor noted that boasting about mass destruction isn’t exactly a dating win.

HenryNunamaker − Note to self, bragging that I can destroy everything in a 30 mile radius turns women off.

Another user stressed the danger of ignoring red flags—professionals can assess whether it’s a real threat or just hot air.

cats-are-people-too − NTA. Makes me think of all the situations where something terrible happens and folks ask how everyone ignored all the red flags. Those were definitely red flags, and you simply chose not to ignore.

Now it's in the hands of professionals who are in a much better position than you are to determine whether he's a potential domestic terrorist or just a blustering j**kass. If he knows enough to track you down, please take steps to stay safe.

Someone with a nuclear physicist in the family shared that people in the industry simply don’t joke about things like this.

Visual-Measurement24 − NTA. Have a nuclear physicist in the family. Normal people who know what those things mean don’t joke about them. He’s either sick in the head, evil, or both. Thanks for reporting him.

An insider added that the man likely exaggerated his role and couldn’t actually trigger anything without dozens of alerts.

NickDanger3di − NTA - and don't feel guilty. I've worked with the nuclear power industry a lot; as serious as they are about such things, they are just as professional and fair.

I know their process for such situations; they will simply have this guy see a shrink for a few sessions, and will rely on the shrink's evaluation and recommendations regarding his future at the power plant.

Bear in mind that some insecure guys will say all sorts of things they don't really mean, or exaggerate their authority at work, if they like a woman a lot.

Also, the shift leader in the control room cannot do *anything* that could lead to even a serious malfunction, much less a meltdown, without numerous loud alarms going off on numerous devices, which his bosses and his bosses bosses carry with them at all times.

If he implied that he could, he was fabricating when he spoke.

A Reddit user called the guy’s rant wildly inappropriate for a first date, shrugging off his career risks.

[Reddit User] − NTA. None of what he's saying is 'first date' material. That's the sort of s**t-talking you do when you're long-term, and there's context between you. If you ruined his career, *shrug*, but that depends entirely upon the FBI and what they do or do not find.

You've done your bit; block him on everything, and carry on.

Ninjastarkid lauded her bravery, noting that serious or not, the FBI can sort it out.

ninjastarkid − NTA, if it was a joke he would’ve said anything at all to indicate it. Since he only talked about that, I think it’s a reasonable assumption he was serious. Good on you for being brave and telling the authorities. You may have saved many lives, who knows.

If he is really joking, then when the FBI get there, they’ll do their interviews, figure out he’s no danger and let him go. If he’s known for that sort of humor he may not even get fired.

Olavf, a nuclear plant worker, doubted the guy’s claims but backed reporting as a safety must.

olavf − NTA I know a few nukes and most of them are ex-submarine. Boat people don't always have the best people skills, but this is red flag territory. Maybe he started drinking before. he showed up, maybe he needs some help. But unless he's actually dangerous it probably won't cost him his job.

This user suggested reporting directly to the NRC, amplifying the Redditor’s proactive stance.

gigapoctopus − You can also make a report directly to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC): [https://www. nrc. gov/about-nrc/regulatory/allegations/safety-concern. html](https://www. nrc. gov/about-nrc/regulatory/allegations/safety-concern.

And finally, a Redditor compared the situation to joking about bombs in an airport: not funny, not smart, and definitely reportable.

ZCT808 − I’m about to board a plane in a couple of hours. If I go through a TSA checkpoint and start making ‘jokes’ about being a terrorist, I’ll be arrested, and investigated, and there will be all manner of serious consequences. AND THERE SHOULD BE!

As a society we can’t take the chance that I might have been serious. So obviously, I’m not going to do that, and I’m not a terrorist. It is deeply disturbing that a guy works around something as dangerous as a nuclear power plant, and is clearly so deeply disturbed.

What he said isn’t a joke, it isn’t funny, no normal person is going to be impressed by it. And like making a terrorist joke at an airport, it is grossly inappropriate. I think you absolutely did the right thing.

Because even if he is an amazing worker, the fact that his judgement is SO far off that he is willing to talk in these terms to a stranger, sows that his judgement, ethics, and moral compass are SO messed up there is no way he should have security clearance to even get into the facility.

Much less near anything that he could use to cause harm. NTA, and better safe than sorry.

Some people also shared their similar experiences:

One commenter said they once reported someone for similar reasons—and it actually prevented a real terrorist plot.

mrmiracle − NTA. Several years ago I had a similar situation (not a date), but I was compelled to call the FBI. Turns out my suspicions were confirmed and contacting the authorities stopped a potential terrorist plot. You did the right thing. Plus, your date seems like a huge a**hole.

afwaltz − NTA. I also work at a nuclear plant. It is always better to report stuff like this even if you think they might be joking. I know a few ops people and they wouldn't make jokes like that in any context. I kind of doubt this guy actually has the position he claims to have.

One, they weed them out during the background check/psych eval.

Two, you have to work there for quite a while before you get up to that position, and if he's willing to talk like that to a complete stranger, he likely would've slipped up and said something disqualifying to one of his coworkers or supervisors.

Three, it is extremely difficult to intentionally cause a meltdown or any kind of real chaos in a nuclear power plant. There are so many backups and backups of backups for all of the safety-related systems, I'm not sure it would even be possible to disable all of them from the control room.

Also, it would be *impossible* to do more than flip a few switches before someone would notice that you are doing something you're not supposed to be doing. An actual ops guy would know all that.

While some friends may think this Redditor overreacted, most of the internet agrees—this wasn’t just a bad date, it was a potential security threat. Whether the guy was joking or genuinely disturbed, his behavior crossed several lines.

What do you think? Should she have handled it differently, or was this the responsible thing to do? And more importantly—what’s the worst thing you’ve ever heard on a first date? Share your thoughts below!
