Amazon Reviewer Accepts Bribes From Vendors Then Edits Posts To Expose Their Fake Review Scheme

A battle-hardened Amazon reviewer snags $10 payoffs to slap glowing five-star plugs on cheap headphones, only to flip the script with brutal one-star exposés that blow the lid off the hustle and spare buyers from trash.

Reddit’s eating up this slick compliance takedown, roasting sellers’ dirty money on phony praise. Honor squares off against cooked scores, with users hyping repeat raids over ban threats in the review revolt.

A Redditor fights fake Amazon reviews by accepting bribes, then editing to expose scams.

Amazon Reviewer Accepts Bribes From Vendors Then Edits Posts To Expose Their Fake Review Scheme
Not the actual photo.

“Sure! I’d be happy to give you a 5 star Amazon review in exchange for a gift card.”

You know all those Amazon vendors that are offering gift cards and free items in exchange for 5 star reviews?

What I do is accept offer, write the review, get my gift card, edit the review to one star and explain the situation.

I started getting items in the mail like headphones or whatever with a note

that offers free stuff and 10$ gift cards in exchange for writing a 5 star review on Amazon.

I’m a fairly big reviewer, over the years I have written more than 2,000 legit reviews.

To me, reviews are the most useful aspect of Amazon and nothing p__ses me off more than fake reviews to promote a s__tty product.

So I said “f__k it”, I started writing the review, emailing the “scammer” with a link to my review, get my $10 gift card,

then I edit the review to explicitly explain how this scammer is trying to rig the system.

There’s absolutely nothing to prevent you from doing this. Not only do you waste their time and money,

but your review can help raise awareness of this b__ls__t.

Our clever Redditor stumbled into this trap when freebies started piling up at their door, each with a note dangling gift cards for perfect scores.

Instead of playing along, they turned the tables: write the five-star fluff, email proof, pocket the prize, then rewrite history with a one-star takedown spilling the scam beans.

It’s a bold move against vendors gaming the system to bury bad products under fake praise.

From the vendors’ side, it’s all about survival in a cutthroat marketplace. Desperate for visibility, they bribe for boosts, hoping starry ratings lure buyers.

But flip to the Redditor’s view, they’re a review purist, enraged by lies that mislead shoppers like us. Motivations clash like oil and water: profit-chasing versus truth-telling.

This ties into bigger headaches with online trust. Fake reviews aren’t just annoying, they’re a plague eroding e-commerce faith.

According to a 2023 Fakespot report, up to 40% of Amazon reviews could be inauthentic, costing consumers billions in dud purchases. It’s a social snag where algorithms favor fluff over facts, turning shopping into a guessing game.

E-commerce expert Joe Burton, CEO of Reputation, states in a Forbes article, “Digital testimonials have become the new currency of trust, dramatically reshaping how consumers make decisions and how businesses build their reputations.”

Here, it mirrors reviewer-seller bonds: bribes create those turning-away moments, eroding credibility bit by bit, just as our Redditor’s edit seizes a sliding door opportunity to reconnect shoppers with truth over deception.

Applying this, vendors should prioritize those small, authentic interactions – like transparent product listings and responsive service – to steadily build lasting loyalty rather than risking a slow crumble through shortcuts.

Burton’s insight, drawn from analyzing consumer behavior surveys, underscores how trust isn’t a grand gesture but a daily choice, much like honest reviews that guide buyers away from pitfalls.

In the e-commerce world, where one fake star can mislead thousands, these “sliding door” decisions by reviewers like our hero amplify the stakes, turning potential betrayals into bridges of reliability.

Neutral advice? Report these offers to Amazon support as they violate seller rules and pile up complaints can boot bad actors. For reviewers, channel frustration into detailed, honest critiques without the bait. It keeps the ecosystem clean.

Check out how the community responded:

Some praise the 1-star reviews for exposing review manipulation.

Status_Percentage − Malicious compliance and exposing the scammers all in one. Keep up the good work.

AtheneSchmidt − As a person who always looks at the reviews, thank you for keeping it legit!

And any company trying to buy reviews deserves to lose a couple of bucks!

Others warn Amazon bans reviewers for accepting free products.

Ok_Plastic5822 − Amazon will ban you from writing reviews for accepting the gifts in exchange for the reviews.

They did this to me several years ago even though I never actually did it - was just the explanation they offered me. I had thousands of legitimate reviews

OOmama − Amazon bots watch for reviews like this and will ban you from reviewing all together soon.

I did the same thing you did and they booted me.

onyxandcake − Legit Amazon Reviewer here (as in, I get a tax slip from Amazon Inc. every year):

I think what you're doing is great, and will really help people see just how manipulated those ratings are.

That being said, it's a violation of your terms and conditions and can get your account locked.

So my recommendation is to use a secondary credit card to create an alt account, and start doing it from that one instead. Cheers!

tyw7 − Be careful about doing this as you can get your reviewers right removed.

I left 1* reviews and I think the "scammers" reported my reviews and got me removed.

Some urge reporting sellers to Amazon to trigger bans.

MichigaCur − I really wish Amazon would let us easily report this practice...

Get a couple dozen complaints and nuke all 3+ star reviews. It'd end this in very short order.

taloncard815 − That's actually a violation of Amazon's policies. If you report them to Amazon the hopefully get banned from selling

anotherteapot − Disclaimer: I work for Amazon. Please report these sellers to customer service.

It's a violation of the seller agreement to use this tactic and with enough reports the sellers will have action taken against them.

Others note Amazon removes scam-exposing reviews.

[Reddit User] − You should know Amazon will routinely remove reviews that are to this effect,

ones pointing out/claiming the seller is a scammer or are doing things against the TOS.

Instead just edit your review to a scathing 1-star about the product, it's something the seller has no recourse against.

Benzaitennyo − I gotta tell you that it doesn't last long, not that it shouldn't hurt their business, but Amazon is aggressive in curating reviews.

I've been banned from reviewing multiple times and all I've ever done was talk about problems with a product.

Vendors can report your reviews and there's not really any clear reason as to why it goes through,

but low reviews I think are just seen as bad for business now.

A user shares stories of unsolicited packages to fake sales.

Bartifex09 − Lots of companies do stuff like this and it's annoying as hell.

We've received over 25 packages in the last year we never ordered. Ours don't even come with the gift card offer.

Pretty sure they just ship it to create a sale so they can put the review in on their own.

I've gotten everything from a lawn sprinkler, to a back massager, to random pillowcases and St Patrick's day decorations. They just keep coming...

Some clarify if sellers demand 5-star or just any review.

jaffa_kree00 − Are these vendors asking for 5 star reviews when they contact you? Or just giving you the product and asking for a review.

This Redditor’s scam-busting spree is a hilarious reminder that payback can pack a punch without punching below the belt. They turned freebies into fraud alerts, potentially saving countless wallets from worthless widgets.

Do you think their edit-and-expose tactic is fair game in the fight against fakes, or does it risk too much backlash from Amazon’s bots? How would you handle a surprise package bribe, cash in, call out, or chuck it? Share your hot takes!
