Some people love to show off their “fancy” tastes, especially when they think they’re getting the short end of the stick. But what happens when you mess with the wrong person?

While on vacation, one family witnessed a couple at a hotel bar trying to pull a fast one over a bartender, only to be met with an unexpected response. When they complained about the size of their wine glasses, they didn’t realize they were about to get a dose of their own medicine. Keep reading to find out how this bartender turned the tables in the most satisfying way possible.

A couple at a hotel bar pushes the bartender to serve their wine in bigger glasses, but the results leave them speechless

'They wanted a bigger glass, so he gave them a bigger glass?'

My parents and I were on vacation a few years back, and hanging out at the Hotel bar.

This place was one of those places that was cheap, but everyone who stayed there thought they were better than everyone else.

A couple (Male & Female) walked in talking about how "Nice and quaint" the bar looked. They sat down at the table next to us.

You were supposed to order your drinks at the bar, then sit down. But since it was a slow night the bartender walked over, and served them.

Bartender: Hi, what can I get you? Male: What wines do you have tonight?

Bartender" (Reads off wine list). Female: Ooo, a Rose wine would be just perfect. Male: Make it two.

Bartender: Sure that'll be $15. Male - We're going to open a tab.

Bartender: Unfortunately, we don't do tabs here, you have to either charge it to your room, or pay cash. He throws his room card on the table.

Male: Ugh, Fine. Charge it to that.

They laugh as bartender grabs the card, and heads back to the bar. Bartender pours their drinks, and brings them back over.

The first thing they did was hold up the glasses.

Female: Hmm, these are rather small. Do you have any bigger glasses?

Bartender: Unfortunately, those are the standard glasses.

Male: Really? We're paying $7.50 a glass, and you're going to get chintzy on us? Surely you have bigger glasses, come on.

Bartender (clearly annoyed): Ok, I'll go check.

He went to the bar, and came back out with two glasses that I think were supposed to be for margaritas,

but were at least twice the size as the wine glasses. He held them up for them.

Bartender: How are these? Female: Oh, those are perfect. Male: Yes, thank you.

So bartender puts the bigger glasses on their table, then takes the smaller glasses and dumps them into the bigger glasses.

Bartender: Is there anything else I can help you with? They didn't say anything, just sat there dumbfounded.

Bartender: Great. My parents and I start losing it. We tried not to laugh, but we were all a bit inebriated I guess.

Bartender looked over at us and smiled. My Dad gave him an extra $10 tip and said "Thanks for the laughs"

Don't f__k with the people who serve your drinks lol

In this scenario, the woman (OP) finds herself in a tricky position, where her role as a stepmom is not being properly acknowledged, and the lack of appreciation from her fiancé makes it all the more difficult. While she’s willingly taking on childcare duties, she feels unappreciated when her fiancé continues to ignore her contributions.

Many stepparents face this dilemma. In the excitement of blending families, it’s common for one partner to take on more of the parenting load, often without recognition or support from the other partner.

And while the initial willingness to help can stem from a sense of duty or affection, it can eventually lead to feelings of burnout or resentment if it becomes an expected, unacknowledged duty.

Psychologists specializing in family dynamics emphasize that clear communication is key in blended families.

“Stepparents often find themselves caught between wanting to help but also feeling like they’re overstepping,” says Dr. Laura McClure, a family counselor with over 15 years of experience working with blended families. “Setting expectations early on and establishing clear boundaries can help prevent misunderstandings and resentment later on.”

In this case, OP might benefit from having a frank conversation with her fiancé. Instead of letting feelings of frustration build up, it’s crucial to express how the lack of gratitude and the imbalance in parenting roles are making her feel unappreciated. Relationships should be a team effort, especially when it comes to parenting.

According to Dr. McClure, both partners should contribute equally to the duties of parenting and childcare. The primary parent should ensure that the stepparent is integrated into the parenting role at their own pace, without expecting them to take on all the responsibility.

By communicating openly, OP can ensure that her role as a stepmom is respected and that both partners contribute to their shared responsibilities in a fair, balanced way. This can create a healthier family dynamic and prevent frustration from building up.

Ultimately, OP’s fiancé must recognize that gratitude and shared responsibility are essential to a healthy relationship, especially in a blended family. If they want a smooth, respectful partnership, they need to address the imbalance before it leads to resentment.

What do you think? Should OP have a more direct conversation with her fiancé? Or is it a matter of him recognizing his behavior on his own? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These Redditors roasted customers for misunderstanding drink volume and glass sizes

DootDotDittyOtt − Meanwhile, bar glasses are all smoke and mirrors.

Back when I was a manager at a bar, they sent us a case of the wrong style and size martini glasses.

They were 4oz, and we served in 5 oz glasses. The distributor just said keep them. We ended up having to get into 4 oz glasses one night.

Wouldn't you know it, a regular lost their mind when they got their 2nd round in a 5 oz glass... And insisted they get the 4 oz one... Cause it...

Testsubject276 − They actually expected them to top off those glasses? My god.

[Reddit User] − hahahahahahahaha i freaking LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!! I remember once when i was a kid and my family went on holiday.

We were at a restaurant and Dad ordered a beer. Well, it came in this HUGE arsed glass, thing was about 16 inches tall!

Dad kept admiring the glass so while he was in the bathroom, my brother and I went up to the bar and asked if we might please purchase an empty...

I think I was about 11 at the time, my brother was 13 so the bartender must have thought we were pretty cute

because he actually sold us an empty glass for $5.

We were SO excited to give it to our parental unit when he got back to the table haha. It's still kicking around at the back of the kitchen cupboard!

Grizzly_Berry − I'm a bartender and people ask for a bigger glass all the time, sometimes pint glasses for their mixed drink.

They seem to think the amount of alcohol is proportional to the volume of the glass. Wrongo.

I usually inform them that this just means they'll be getting more mixer and they're shocked or confused.

One guy was like "yep, that's what I want. I don't want to taste the vodka." Man knew what he was about. I respected that.

roxy_dee − It’s like people who ask for less ice and a bigger cup at Starbucks thinking they’re getting more coffee. Nah, now you just have lukewarm coffee.

These folks highlighted how customers often overvalue the cost of drinks and make ridiculous demands about glass sizes

[Reddit User] − Don't f__k with the people who serve your drinks Or your food. You have no idea what they are doing with it out of your sight.

[Reddit User] − My old head doorman was not a people person when it came to complaints about glass sizes.

Customers used to think complaining to a doorman was better than going to the bar.

Best one he ever did was invite 2 complaining customers outside as there were bigger glasses out there.

Head doorman: "you see that bar across the road? Well they have bigger glasses than here so you can f__k off over there!"

OmniscientSpork − I love that they acted like $7.50 a glass was expensive.

[Reddit User] − It’s so funny when guests think they can outsmart the bartender for extra drink.

My favorite is when they ask for a drink with light ice and/or light mixer and then try to get mad that the glass comes out half empty.

It’s like ma’am we’re literally giving you exactly what you asked for, less mixer =/= more liquor by any means.

If you want more, order and pay for more. Thems the rules.

Mystique84 − It’s funny that he thinks 7.50 a glass is a lot

These users backed the bartender’s reactions to absurd customer behavior, like unreasonable requests for more alcohol

TechManEthan − I feel like I would've made sure the couple heard me laugh because of how absurd they were being

[Reddit User] − I work at a restaurant attached to a time share place. Those people think I'm their slave.

They're trash and their time share is cheap as s__t compared to where we are. Our house wines arent even as cheap at 7.50 lol

[Reddit User] − That’s a wonderful old bar trick. I’ve done it several times myself.

[Reddit User] − They are the same kind of people that order a margarita “without the ice” then act devastated when they get a glass that’s 1/3rd of the way...

What do you think? Should the bartender have simply refused the couple’s request, or was this the perfect way to put them in their place? Should more service workers embrace malicious compliance, or is this a one-off win?
