Daycare Worker Nearly Gets Fired After Coworker Reports Her, Then Camera Footage Changes Everything

Being accused of mishandling a child would be frightening for anyone, but experiencing it during your first education job can make the entire workplace suddenly feel uncertain.

OP, an 18-year-old classroom aide, was supervising toddlers when one child became frustrated during cleanup and started hitting her. She tried to redirect the child, got down to their level, and pulled them a little closer while asking what was wrong.

Another teacher apparently saw the movement differently and reported OP for using excessive force. Her supervisor confronted her and warned that termination was possible before reviewing the classroom footage.

OP gave them the precise timestamp, and once the cameras were checked, management realized the incident had not happened as initially described. Her boss apologized, praised her work, and told her to take an early lunch. The apology helped, but OP is still left wondering whether she can trust the workplace after seeing how quickly a serious accusation was made.

Coworker reports her for mishandling a toddler, but camera footage proves her intentions were innocent

'My coworker reported me and my boss almost terminated me without checking the evidence'

I (18F) started a daycare/school job a few months back. Recently a situation came up and I don’t know if I should consider looking for a different job or not.

For context, I deal with toddlers and I’m kind of like.. a floater/sub/whatever. There’s two of us teachers in the class.

I had never worked with this teacher before, we had to combine classes because the population was low and her only student that showed up was getting bored.

One teacher had one on the changing table to change their diaper. I had about 5-8 kids in the class, running around.

It was post lunch and about time to clean up, read a story and take a nap. I had instructed this kid to start cleaning up and they start throwing...

Whatever, I tell the kid to be gentle and that I can help them clean up. They start hitting me again.

I get down to their level, pull them a bit closer and ask them what’s up and they want me to help them clean up.

When I pulled the kid closer, their entire body moved and the other teacher thought that I was taking out my frustration on the kid?

It definitely wasn’t my intention to do that but I can see how they’d take it like that.

Fast forward, this teacher reported me to my supervisor. My big boss gets mad, explains I used force with force and tells me I could be terminated.

I explain that I didn’t tug the child to make them feel thst way, I was trying to get them to clean up nor did I have to intention to...

I gave them the time stamp, they left to check the cameras. They came back and apologized, praising me as a really good sub and told me to take an...

At that point, it left a pretty s__t taste in my mouth and I don’t know what I should do. Should I consider finding a new job? Any advice?

This is my first teaching job and I don’t know what to do.

EDIT: To clarify, I misspoke twice. I wrote this a little late at night so I didn’t realize my typo but I am 18.

I do work at a school. It has a toddler department and a preschool department. We do have teachers, I do work as a classroom aid.

EDIT #2: Thank you to lots of the helpful comments :)

I did post this to find some reassurance, I was very scared because I had never been in an education based job.

I appreciate a lot of the help and advice, I do enjoy my job. The children I teach are an absolute delight.

Few things shake a new employee like realizing that a misunderstanding could have cost them their job. The fear becomes even stronger when the work involves children, because the stakes are understandably high and any allegation involving physical handling can trigger an immediate protective response.

For this young classroom aide, the incident was upsetting because she believed she was trying to manage a toddler who was hitting her, yet another teacher interpreted the movement as frustration directed toward the child.

The supervisor initially reacted seriously enough to mention termination, which understandably left the employee questioning whether she could trust the workplace. But there is an important detail that changes the picture: once she provided the timestamp, management checked the security footage, saw what actually happened, apologized, and even praised her work.

A different perspective is that the coworker’s report may not have been malicious. In a childcare environment, staff are expected to take even ambiguous physical interactions seriously.

The other teacher saw a child being pulled and may have believed she was witnessing inappropriate force. Reporting a concern can therefore be appropriate even when the interpretation later turns out to be wrong. The more concerning part would be management making a final disciplinary decision without investigating first.

Psychologist Amy Edmondson, whose research focuses on psychological safety in workplaces, explains that healthy organizations need environments where people can raise concerns without fear, while leaders also need to respond to those concerns through inquiry rather than reflexive judgment.

Psychological safety is not simply about being comfortable; it involves creating conditions where people can identify mistakes, concerns, and uncertainty so they can be examined rather than concealed.

That principle is especially relevant in childcare. A teacher who sees something that might indicate inappropriate handling should be able to report it.

At the same time, an employee accused of misconduct deserves a fair investigation before serious conclusions are reached. Those protections are not contradictory; they reinforce one another. Children are safer when staff report genuine concerns, and employees are safer when supervisors verify what happened before imposing discipline.

The management team ultimately did the important thing: they checked the evidence. Their apology and praise suggest that the initial reaction was not their final judgment. That matters more than the fact that the first conversation was frightening.

The employee therefore may not need to leave a job she otherwise enjoys solely because an accusation occurred.

A better approach would be to observe how the workplace handles future concerns, review the school’s policies on physical intervention and documentation, and ask a trusted supervisor for guidance about appropriate ways to respond when toddlers become physically aggressive.

Being reported does not automatically mean she did something wrong. In childcare, accountability is necessary, but so is context. The encouraging part of this story is that when the facts were checked, the facts mattered—and that is a much healthier outcome than an organization blindly choosing a side.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These Redditors said one bad incident was not enough reason to quit after the boss corrected it

Repulsive-Baker-4268 − No, if you're going to give up after 1 bump in the road, you'll never grow.

However, Boss should show the other teacher to video so they can understand what really happened and apologize to you.

Sunflowerbugs − Sorry that happened to you.

Keep in mind that the boss needs to be very mindful of the children’s well being and any force that is being used in the facility.

It sounds like they were open and receptive to getting all the facts before any punishment was given to you- that’s not the worse thing in the world.

I would suggest trying to view it from the side of the boss (and other teacher) trying to protect the toddlers the best they could.

Ultimately they did see that you did well and even praised you for the job you’re doing.

If this change in perspective is still not enough to make you feel comfortable in the job, you can very much look for new work.

Just remember that great bosses try to do the best they can with the information given-

and finding a boss who will take the time to listen to you and follow up to get the information before making a disciplinary decision is rare.

JedBartlettPear − It does sound like your boss was able to realize they were initially mistaken, apologize, and try to make up for it.

These are far from universal behaviors, so it seems like it'd be worth seeing if it can work out.

It sounds like your issue is with how your boss jumped directly to assuming you mistreated the child,

and it's completely valid to feel s__tty about how that went down.

I think it would be reasonable to go to your boss and say "Hey, I get how serious this is and that you have responsibility for children's safety that has...

If something like happens again, can we start from a place of 'Okay what actually happened' instead of immediately threatening termination? "

This group stressed that childcare staff must take any suspected mistreatment seriously to protect children

ICantDrive5 − When it comes to child caree facilities like that, they have to treat accusations as the accused is guilty until proven innocent to protect the child.

Also I don’t blame the other teacher either.

She saw something out of her eye and was mistaken. But she has a due diligence to report any suspected abuse. Suspected being the key word.

At that point the center investigates.

Your director explained the situation, watched the tapes, commended you on your work and gave you a little perk as an apology.

To me it played out exactly how it should have.

I get it though. You know in your heart that you wouldn’t hurt a child. But no one else there knows that for sure.

Don’t think of it like the teacher was trying to attack or blame you.

Treat it like the teacher has the kids best interest at heart and wanted to be sure beyond any reasonable doubt.

inlike069 − Safety of the children is priority number 1.

They HAD to take the complaint seriously. They checked tapes and saw you were good. Coworker probably just made a mistake. I wouldn't sweat it.

These commenters felt the boss ultimately handled things fairly but should address the initial assumption more carefully.

mcmurrml − The place has cameras. You need to keep in mind anyone in a manager's or owners position is looking out for the business.

Any allegations could ruin them. They ended up doing the right thing.

What you could do is bring this up and say thanks I appreciate it but it did make me feel bad that you accused me first without knowing for sure.

I just wanted to check to be sure I would not get accused first in the future.

blarryg − Yes, always maintain your optionality! You are just a sub/floater/whatever here, you can maybe move up in positions, make sure the next place is well run.

You can then decide whether to move. One sign would be to see if the boss told the teacher that what you did was OK.

If he won't do that unasked, then they don't have your back.

But, either way, see if you can't do better on the market.

You may be able to move up and then you can tell them that you were spurred to do this when they automatically assumed you were guilty, just so they...

If you don't find something better, hey, you got some job search/interview practice which is always good.

These users advised against quitting impulsively and suggested finding a better job first if needed

BeNice2Every1 − Don’t ever quit a job on emotion. Never leave one job before you find another.

If you have been wronged, say do confidently and in a normal tone of voice. Goes a long way. Thank God for cameras.

Tombstonesss − You’re 17, work somewhere that you enjoy.

Unless this job is paying for rent, food, car etc just go somewhere you like. It’s not going to get any better at that workplace.

Odd_Awareness1444 − In today's world I would never take care of children. If you do make sure there is always some other adult in the room

and be sure to always be on camera. Too many people have had lives ruined due to false accusations or vindictive coworkers.

Would that be enough to rebuild trust in the workplace, or would the initial reaction make someone start looking elsewhere? And should childcare managers change how they communicate during investigations so employees do not feel convicted before the evidence is checked?
