Employee Quits Immediately After Manager Threatens Job, Leaves The Store In Shambles

Sometimes, the straw that breaks the camel’s back isn’t just the last inconvenience; it’s the years of frustration that lead up to it. After years of working under poor management and navigating a constant staffing crisis at a well-known grocery store, one employee decided she’d had enough.

After an exhausting night during an important audit, where she was left to handle everything alone with no help, her assistant manager had the audacity to tell her to “just get it done” and even suggested she should look for another job.

Well, she decided to take him up on that suggestion, but not before walking out and leaving the place in chaos. The result? A failed audit and several employees following her lead.

A bakery/deli worker, already resigned and facing a stressful audit night alone, walks out mid-shift after an assistant manager threatens termination

Employee Quits Immediately After Manager Threatens Job, Leaves The Store In Shambles
not the actual photo

'Threaten my job when I'm already quitting? Have fun with no workers?'

I work at a well know huge grocery store in the bakery/deli.

I've been in the general area now for 3 years, been in management and recently stepped down this year to focus on college.

In early July I turned in my letter of resignation letting them know that August 13th would be my last day.

It's now about mid July now and we've got an audit going on.

Basically everything has to be perfect, they ask you questions about your job, everything has to be on code etc.

Up till this point we've been having an issue with staffing because instead of hiring employees full-time they hire everyone part time,

I am the only full time employee in my department.

Because of this, there's never enough people to work and they'll schedule 4 people working 3 or 4 hour shifts

one night and then the next one person will be closing alone the entire night, usually me.

I'm fine with that, I enjoy working alone but this night was extra stressful with all the extra work I had to do because of the audit.

I was all alone the night in question, and working a shorter shift than usual.

We tend to close the deli around 8 p.m and have 2 hours to clean up.

I was scheduled till 8:30 p.m and spoke to my managers about it and got permission to close at 5

so I could take a lunch break and have 2 hours to close up.

My managers also said that I would be sent someone around 7:30 p.m to help me close on time.

Around 7 p.m a woman comes up to the meat slicers asking for some sliced meet, I tell her I'm sorry but we are closed for the night.

She bitches me out for a moment, complains that she comes here every other night

and we are always open and I explain to her that we are low on staffing and I've already cleaned the slicers for the night and she leaves.

About 5 to 10 minutes later my assistant manager walks up and asked me what the problem was.

She had gone to management and demanded we slice her the meat.

I explained the situation and his response was to berate me for closing the deli down early and tell me to help her and just clean it again.

"Just stop being difficult." Is what he said.

After slicing her some meat we ended up being out of a different kind and she walked out of the store,

leaving everything behind and meaning I had created more cleaning for nothing. I was pissed.

I took a walk to cool down and went to find my buddy who was supposed to come over at 7:30 p.m and ask when he was coming over.

When I found him he told me he wouldn't be able to come over

because the assistant manager had come over and given him a long list of stuff to do for the rest of the night.

That pissed me off even more.

I found the assistant manager and was like dude wtf and reiterated that I was leaving at 8:30 p.m.

and needed assistance and he told me to once again stop being difficult and just to get it all done.

I told him there was no way I was getting it done in time and said that my schedule says I leave at 8:30

so I'm leaving at 8:30, regardless of how much is left to do.

I guess he hadn't gotten the memo that I was quitting soon and so, in response,

he tells me that if I can't do my job well enough that maybe I should start looking for another job. That was my breaking point.

After 3 years of working with s__tty management and their backward ways I decided I didn't need to do it anymore.

I told him ok, found some of my favorite coworkers and told them goodbye.

It was nice working with them and walked out. Haven't gone back since.

They failed their audit, 6 other employees in my general area quit shortly after time due to most of them traveling out for college.

The rest are planning on leaving as well. As far as I know the entire area is f**ked up.

Hope the manager got his ass chewed out but I doubt it.

I've reported some of the managers there for serious issues

(telling me they were too busy to help women whos lives were being threatened in store, retaliation,

threatening to fire people if they didn't work overtime causing someone to lose Medicare and ration their insulin and be hospitalized for a few weeks)

and they never went anywhere.. F__k that place.. Edit: Grammar, also for those asking is was the world of wally.

Although the employee had already planned to leave, the manager’s unprofessional attitude pushed him to make his exit even sooner.

The poster had worked at a large grocery store in the bakery/deli department for three years. Having recently stepped down from management to focus on college, the poster had already submitted their resignation letter with a clear end date: August 13th.

Things were already tense due to staffing shortages, as the store hired mostly part-time workers, leaving the poster as the only full-time employee in their department.

This resulted in frequent shifts where the poster was left alone to handle everything, which, while manageable, was made more difficult by the added stress of an upcoming audit.

One night, during the audit, the poster was scheduled to work a shorter shift and had already arranged with their managers to leave at 8:30 p.m. to take a break and close up.

However, things quickly went south when a customer demanded sliced meat after the deli had already closed. Despite explaining the situation, the poster was berated by the assistant manager, who disregarded the original plan and told them to accommodate the customer.

When the promised help didn’t arrive, the poster was even more frustrated, especially after learning that their colleague had been given additional tasks instead of assisting.

But the breaking point came when the assistant manager, unaware that the poster was already quitting, told them, “If you can’t do your job well enough, maybe you should start looking for another job.” This was the final straw. The poster calmly said their goodbyes, walked out, and never returned.

In the aftermath, the department failed its audit, and several other employees left due to poor management. The situation painted a clear picture of how toxic workplace dynamics, like micromanagement, poor communication, and a lack of empathy, can cause significant turnover and harm to a business.

This situation highlights a crucial point that when employees are already leaving, adding unnecessary pressure and dismissive attitudes can push them to act sooner than expected.

According to HR Lineup, “Resentment causes employees to become disengaged from their work. When employees feel underappreciated or treated unfairly, they lose motivation, leading to a decline in productivity and workplace morale. Disengaged employees often show less commitment to the organization’s goals and values.”

While the poster’s departure may have been a personal decision, it was also a clear consequence of a mismanaged environment.

So, when a company fails to listen to its employees and continuously mistreats them, is there a tipping point where loyalty becomes irrelevant?

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

This group emphasized the importance of setting boundaries at work and standing up for yourself when management pushes unreasonable expectations on employees

ritabook84 − How the manager should have handled the customer: I'm sorry for the inconvenience

but unfortunately we had to close the deli early tonight.

However we have a large selection of prepackaged meat and for your trouble,

I’ll knock 10% off a packaged deli meat of your choosing. Customer service is there but so are boundaries. It ain’t hard.

Not a guarantee she doesn’t still freak out, but she also can’t say nothing is being done and people usually love a discount

virgilreality − . ..he tells me that if I can't do my job well enough that maybe I should start looking for another job.

If he can't staff his business with enough people to get the job done, then HE should start looking for a new job.

unRealityEngineer − The customer is NOT "always right". I would have made the manager do the slicing, and then the cleaning.

Walked him through step by step, at the end said, "you've been trained. F__k you I'm out. " Then again, I'm a little more aggressive.

These commenters acknowledged the frustrations of working in retail

NerdyToc − People don't quit jobs, they quit managers.

bobobedo − I worked at a non profit for ten years, I had several HR people tell us in managers meetings to never tell employees

that if they didn't like working conditions, they could get quit. The HR guy says that's a violation of DOL standards.

I don't know, but it does sound like management is creating a hostile working environment.

TemporaryReality5262 − Biggest f__king fallacy of the 20th century the cUstOmeR iS AlWayS RigHt!

These Redditors reflected on the struggles of working in retail, sharing personal experiences of feeling undervalued

[Reddit User] − Good on ya bud. I hope it felt good you deserve better than that s__t

paul_is_on_reddit − All of what OP presented here is truthful and 100% accurate.

I have experienced all of these things first hand (and much more) while working in the deli/bakery for the grocery store who's mascot is a green dragon.

In retail grocery, if you aren't in management, you are a third-class worker bee, whose worth to the company is less than you can imagine.

You are not there to think or have an opinion. You are there to put up with the complaining, whining

and insufferable Karens and Kyles, while you slice their meats and cheeses,

all while putting on your best smile, while you are grinding your teeth and are reevaluating your career choice.

You are repeatedly reminded that you are easily replaceable.

You are talked down-to by customers and thrown under the bus by management, in the quest to avoid customer complaints at all costs.

Do I sound salty? Well, that's because I am. Did I do something about it? Yes. I got the f__k out.

It took me eighteen f__king years to realize what a fool I was for putting up with retail and I feel much better about life

since I left and found a different path in life. /rant

Jo_Ehm − Grocery store retail is the 10th circle of hell. Glad you got out. Now take those skills, change industry, and enjoy your life.

LearnsFromExperience − And then they start crying about nOBoDy WanTs tO wORk!

This group shared stories of dealing with unhelpful managers, poor training, and being overworked

livinginfutureworld − it. I've reported some of the managers there for serious issues

(telling me they were too busy to help women whose lives were being threatened in store, retaliation,

Nobody gives a s__t and the powerful get away with m__der and the middle and bottom get stuck shovelling the s__t.

WriterMel − I worked at a the grocery deli for four days as a second job several years ago.

I did the typical onboarding, spent a day watching all the videos and doing “computer training”.

My second day I was supposed to be trained in the deli.

But the person said they were too busy to train me, and had me doing dishes and cleaning the floor.

Whatever. It was a second job, I didn’t have any expectations or aspirations.

My third day, the “trainer” from the day before wasn’t scheduled, and the person working had no idea what to do with me,

so I once again did dishes and cleaned the floors. My fourth day, I clocked in, and the “trainer” was back. Yay.

But she was swamped at the counter with a long line. She asked me to help her out.

I said sure, but I don’t actually know how any of the equipment works.

She said she figured they would have shown me the day before. Nope, I can do the dishes though.

lol She gave me a very quick once through on how to use the slicer, and set me up at the counter, and split the line.

So now I was faced with frustrated customers on a Friday night.

The first person was a guy who wanted something we didn’t have at the counter. My co-worker said it was in the walk-in.

I looked, and sure enough I eventually found a spot labeled with that kind of ham, but it was empty.

I stood there, and literally out loud said, “I could go out and turn right, and try to explain.

OR. Or I could turn left, clock out, and go home. As I was leaving I saw the manager chatting in the bakery.

I handed her my hat and said they probably needed some help in deli. I felt SO GOOD to just walk out. lol

Cybermagetx − I remember once I had the assistance manager tell me to start baking more bread, at 8pm.

When I have never worked the 4am shift to even know the way Kro*er wanted the bread made/organized.

I laughed at her and told her no. So glad I no longer working for that company.

Always understaffed and saying how much of a team/family we are, till they had to help.

This commenter pointed out how many different stores seem to have the same problematic patterns

essaysmith − The fact that everyone on here has basically named a different store chain that pulls the same crop is really quite sad.

Was the walkout warrior or warranted? Would you audit-expose pre-quit, or mentor the mass exit? How do you deli-defend dignity? Slice your stories below, we’re baking the backlash!
