Ezekiel Elliott’s return to the Dallas Cowboys in 2024 has not gone as he imagined. After a strong start, his role has been reduced significantly, especially following the team’s victory over the Cleveland Browns in Week 1. While Elliott expected to be a key player, he finds himself adapting to a backup position as the Cowboys navigate a challenging season.
The recent win against the Pittsburgh Steelers showcased the rise of Rico Dowdle, who had a career game, rushing for 87 yards. This performance helped propel the Cowboys to a 3-2 record and marked their first two-game winning streak of the season. Elliott has taken notice of the successful three-man rushing attack, which includes Dowdle and fullback Hunter Luepke.
“I think the biggest thing is we got the attempts for the group,” Elliott stated. “It’s tough early in the game when you run the football, because the defenses are fresh and ready. But once you get to the second half and start getting those attempts, you see that D-line wear down.”
The Cowboys’ rushing unit combined for 28 carries, not including attempts from quarterback Dak Prescott and receivers CeeDee Lamb and KaVontae Turpin. Head coach Mike McCarthy noted that the goal is to hit around 30 carries per game, which they accomplished for the first time this season.
Regarding his backup role, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones clarified that it’s a strategic decision. “We’re saving him, and we should be,” Jones said in an interview. He acknowledged Dowdle’s talent but emphasized the importance of preserving Elliott’s stamina throughout the long NFL season.
“It would be madness to depend on that,” Jones added, referring to the risk of injuries. Elliott understands the approach and, while it has been an adjustment for the former two-time NFL rushing champion, he remains committed to supporting the team.
“It is definitely a little different,” Elliott admitted. “But I just keep my head down and continue to work. Hopefully, my opportunity comes. I’m focused on being a good teammate and helping this team win games.”
In the demanding world of NFL running backs, the Cowboys are taking a long-term approach. By managing Elliott’s workload, they hope to have him fresh and effective as the season progresses. As Elliott continues to adapt, the team’s strategy may prove beneficial as they aim for success in the playoffs.
