Friend Secretly Packs His Things Into Her Checked Bag, Then Gets Mad When She Takes Them Out

Sharing space with a friend can be convenient when traveling, especially when one person has extra room in their luggage. But there is a difference between offering someone space and having them quietly use it without asking, particularly when money is involved.

The original poster (OP) was traveling with a friend who had repeatedly complained about airline baggage fees and proudly planned to avoid paying for a checked bag.

However, OP discovered at the airport that the friend had secretly placed several of his belongings inside OP’s suitcase without asking. When the bag turned out to be overweight, OP decided to remove them before checking it. Read on to see why this simple luggage dispute left their friendship feeling awkward.

'AITA for taking my friend's things out of my checked bag after he wouldn't pay for one?'

My friend Danny and I flew out Thursday for a long weekend at a buddy's place.

It's one of the cheap airlines where the first checked bag is $40 and everything is an add on.

I checked a bag because I was bringing boots and a jacket and I wasn't going to fight the overhead bins.

Danny made a whole thing out of doing carry on only.

He brought it up 3 or 4 times in the week before, about how the bag fee is a scam and he hasn't paid one in years.

At the counter my bag came up over the limit.

I couldn't work out why, so I opened it right there and his boots were in the bottom under my stuff, along with a rolled up jacket and his toiletry...

He'd put it in that morning while I was in the shower. He didn't say a word about it in the car or in the line.

So I took it all out and handed it to him in front of the counter agent. He got quiet and shoved it into his carry on,

and then at the gate they made him gate check it anyway for $65 because it wouldn't fit.

He says I made a big deal over $40 and that the bag was half empty and I was paying for it either way.

He also keeps bringing up that I let him put a pair of shoes in my bag when we went to Nashville 2 years ago.

We got back Sunday and he's been distant to me after that lol AITA?

Sometimes a small act becomes upsetting not because of what it costs, but because of what it assumes. Most friendships involve sharing, helping each other, and occasionally doing favors. The difference is that a favor is meaningful when it is offered freely, not when someone quietly takes advantage of another person’s generosity.

That distinction sits at the center of this situation. Danny had repeatedly emphasized that he refused to pay for checked luggage, making the decision part of his travel plan. Yet while his friend was showering, he secretly placed several belongings inside the friend’s checked suitcase. He did not ask permission or mention what he had done. The problem only became visible when the bag exceeded its weight limit at the airport.

The OP’s decision to remove Danny’s belongings was therefore about more than $40. The hidden luggage had created a practical problem for the person who was actually responsible for the suitcase. If the bag had been overweight, the OP would have had to deal with the consequences of something he never agreed to carry.

A different perspective is that Danny may have genuinely viewed the situation as harmless because there was available space in the suitcase. He may also have remembered a previous occasion when the OP allowed him to put shoes in a bag and interpreted that as an informal arrangement between friends.

But previous generosity does not create permanent permission. A favor given two years ago cannot reasonably become standing authorization for someone to add belongings without asking.

Psychologist and relationship expert Harriet Lerner has written extensively about boundaries and resentment, emphasizing that healthy boundaries clarify what people are willing to do rather than relying on unspoken expectations.

When one person repeatedly assumes access to another person’s time, resources, or belongings, resentment can build because the arrangement is no longer genuinely voluntary.

That idea explains why Danny’s argument about the empty space is beside the point. The suitcase may have had room, but the OP had not agreed to transport Danny’s belongings.

More importantly, Danny knew the OP was paying for the checked bag while he was trying to avoid paying for one himself. Quietly transferring the cost and responsibility to his friend changes the nature of the favor.

His reaction afterward is also revealing. Instead of acknowledging that he should have asked, he focused on the fact that the OP “made a big deal” about the money. But the OP did not create the extra cost. Danny’s decision to avoid the baggage fee created the situation, and the eventual gate-check charge was the result of his own overloaded carry-on.

Friendships survive misunderstandings all the time. They become harder to maintain when one person believes the other should accept a boundary violation simply because the financial amount seems small.

The real question is not whether $40 was worth an argument. It is whether a friend should be allowed to decide that someone else’s money, luggage allowance, and responsibility are available for use without asking.

Sometimes the healthiest boundary is also the simplest one: if it belongs to you, ask before putting it in someone else’s bag.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These Redditors said his distance came from being held accountable for his behavior

Amazing-Wave4704 − Yeah let him be distant. Forever. Im not sure which is worse, the scam or the lying about it - or blaming YOU.

All unacceptable and you are NTA.

copaseticsplenetic − NTA. He's not being distant because he thinks you are the jerk though, he's being distant because you held him accountable

and that's not the kind of friendship he wants.

The evidence is he's bragged about getting over on the airlines by not checking any bags, and he want's to get over on you too. You didn't let him.

Let him stay distant. You don't need him in your life.

FL1ghtlesswaterfowl − You should be distant to him. He is having a temper tantrum because he got called out. NTAH

These users condemned secretly putting belongings into someone else’s luggage without permission

Frankifile − I would be furious if someone put stuff in my bag without permission or my knowledge. Potentially could cause you a lot of trouble.

da4niu2 − NTA That he snuck something in is unacceptable. You are responsible for everything in your bag;

what if he accidentally or intentionally added something illegal? This person has no concept of courtesy, propriety, or integrity.

Thelynxer − If my checked bag was underweight with his stuff in it, then it's no big deal.

Though if they had as much stuff in my bag as I did, then I'd ask them to pay half the fee. But all of this should have been discussed...

However, the fact that they snuck everything in while you were showering is a very sketchy and douchy move.

And because it made your bag overweight, which comes with a lot of extra fees beyond the $40, you are absolutely justified to take his stuff out.

It doesn't make any sense for you to pay baggage fees on his behalf.

Your friend is a cheapskate, and he needs to plan ahead better. You are not the a__hole, he is. He absolutely needs to apologize, and then do better.

If not, then I wouldn't stress too hard about that friendship fading away.

These commenters believed Danny owed a sincere apology and needed to take responsibility

uPcountrY64 − NTA. you did good. edit: Danny should absolutely and sincerely and most unequivocally apologize to you. if not, he ain’t your friend.

Individual-Paint7897 − NTA. Proud of you for standing up for yourself. I don’t think I would want to be buddies with someone shady like that anyway.

If he doesn’t think $40 is a big deal, then why doesn’t he pay for it?

These commenters questioned the baggage costs and how Danny’s belongings affected the fees

TessaKatrinaRose − The math seems odd.   A bag with your stuff and his stuff was only $40.  But a bag with just his stuff was $65?

Natural_Routine29 − So it's fine if you have to pay, but not if he does. NTA

Would you have allowed his belongings to stay if the bag remained under the weight limit, or would the secret packing alone have ended the favor? And does his Nashville comparison change anything? Share your thoughts below!
