Halle Berry reflects on the “important” role she played in 1994’s ‘The Flintstones’, marking it as a “big step forward” for Black women. “It seemed like a small thing, but ‘The Flintstones’ was woven into the fabric of our culture,” Berry shared in a new video on social media, commemorating the film’s 30th anniversary this year.
On Monday (May 27), Berry posted a clip on her Instagram page. “You guys message me every year about ‘The Flintstones’ film, so I thought I’d do something special for the 30th anniversary,” she wrote.
In the video, Berry revisits a scene from the movie where her character is introduced to the iconic Fred Flintstone (John Goodman) and Barney Rubble (Rick Moranis). “I thought it might be really cool to look at some of my scenes because I legit haven’t seen this movie in probably 20 years,” she says.
While discussing the finer details of her role, such as her voice and her “iconic” hairstyle, Berry highlighted how the role felt significant to her. “Being a Black woman in Bedrock seemed like a small thing, but ‘The Flintstones’ was a cultural staple,” she explains.
“I knew that this was a big step forward for Black people, especially Black women,” Berry added. “Even though it was silly, over the top, and campy, I understood how crucial this small part in this big movie would be.”
Berry had made her film debut just three years prior to ‘The Flintstones’ in Spike Lee’s ‘Jungle Fever’.
Despite some setbacks, such as Netflix scrapping her sci-fi film ‘The Mothership’ earlier this year, Berry continues to thrive with two completed projects set for release this year: Netflix’s ‘The Union’, an action-comedy with Mark Wahlberg, and ‘Never Let Go’, a supernatural horror film. Additionally, Berry will star in ‘Maude vs Maude’ alongside Angelina Jolie, acknowledging that they “had a rocky start” to their working relationship last December.
