Summary:
- Hugh Jackman’s first appearance in Wolverine’s iconic yellow suit during camera tests for “Deadpool & Wolverine” moved many crew members to tears, marking a significant moment for fans.
- Director Shawn Levy and Marvel’s Kevin Feige emphasized that this suit was essential for Jackman’s return, reflecting its iconic status.
Executive producer Wendy Jacobson recently revealed to HeyUGuys (via IGN) that adult men were seen “sobbing” during Hugh Jackman’s camera test for “Deadpool & Wolverine” when he donned Wolverine’s iconic yellow and blue superhero suit for the first time.
This moment, which generated significant buzz, marked a major shift as Jackman had never worn the comic-accurate costume in his previous 17-year run as Wolverine.
“It was one of the craziest things,” Jacobson said.
“It was the camera test. It was before we started shooting. To see both of those guys, first of all, in costume together was just mind-blowing, but Hugh was walking out in the yellow and blue. I mean, there were grown men sobbing on set. So we knew it was a special, very special thing.”
In an interview with Variety, Jackman reflected on his first encounter with the suit, saying:
“Everyone was in black leather” when the original “X-Men” film was made in 1999, which led him to believe that was the standard look.
“As soon as I put [the yellow suit] on, I couldn’t believe I never had before,” he added.
Ryan Reynolds, who also stars in the film, remarked, “I’ve never seen a crew reaction like that. We barely talked about the suit in the early development because it was a no-brainer. You don’t do this character now unless he’s in the suit.”
Director Shawn Levy shared that it was Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige who insisted on the yellow suit for Jackman’s return.
“If Jackman were to return as Wolverine after 2017’s note-perfect ‘Logan,’ it would have to be in the yellow suit,” Levy said. “We immediately responded, ‘Hell fucking yes.’”
Feige also noted, “Hugh Jackman having never appeared in the character’s most iconic suit is like being Superman in 10 movies and never wearing the Superman costume.”
He added, “It’s a testament to Wolverine that it didn’t necessarily matter; the character is more than the costume.”
“Deadpool & Wolverine” is set to hit theaters nationwide on July 26, courtesy of Disney.
